Re: Spotted - UK RHD M635CSi in Malaysia

Wow Just searched my old car to find a picture of it on here! Yes this is my old car chassis number 0760216. Previously alpine white. Exported to Malaysia 5 years ago. Got a fair price for it then, god knows what it would fetch in the UK today! But heyho it went to an enthusiast and I have moved on ...

Re: Another 1983 628CSi for sale - UK

Had a good look at it tonight. Yes it would be good to restore but the hours and parts needed might be way too much. Body wise its fine but most panels have either minor scratches or dents so you would need to go over it again. The chassis has some issues, inner wings need repair, both rear cills wh...

Re: Another 1983 628CSi for sale - UK

I am actually going to view this car tonight as i live nearby in Lincoln. I fancy a little project this spring/ summer. Its a poverty spec model so would not be worth that much when done. All depends how far gone it is in the chassis. Previously had an M635csi #216 for 15 years and resurrected a mot...

Re: M635 M88 Engine Number

Hi all - I asked a few questions about the exterior of the car I'm potentially going to be picking up this week and now I need to find out where to find the engine number. I tried a search but there is just so much information to go though! I believe the engine is an M88 - where would I find the en...

I'm very pleased to hear of your eventual success. There's nothing worse than a seemingly "unsolveable" problem! All your detailed reports will be of great use to us other M635CSi owners (and, no doubt ALL E24 owners!). Of course, as has already ben noted, the car would not have gone wron...

Reflection

I would reflect my experience with the following observations. Initial fault was a complete shutdown (instant) of the engine with no restart. Then intermittent shutdowns, then ultimately a dead engine. This could have been a sensor or the main HT lead. Yes I had spark at one point, but compared to t...

Its worth also noting that all the diagnostics i have done have given the correct results for the engine to run. Apart from the earthed sensor of course. E.g. Start signal volts of 9.4v, ac volts of 6.9 and 0.39 for the sensors, grounds at 0.2 ohms etc etc. this may assist others with motronic, inj...

It was internal to the sensor, all connections were fine, no earth on pin 27 detected until you actually fit the sensor into the bellhousing, then you get a ground on pin 27. The motronic will see this ground and not know where to pick the map point from. It needs pure connections from each sensor a...

SORTED SORTED SORTED !!!!!!! At last. Had my old friend come round this morning. Confirmed all my diagnostics. So we went deeper into the sensors, remember both are Brand New. Both had correct resistance and both gave correct ac volts on crank. However when checking from the motronic connector we de...

Best of luck with it Ian. I may be misreading this, but shouldn't you be getting 12v or thereabouts to ECU ? The distributor cap doesn't explain no injector pulses ? Yes but on crank volts will be suppressed a bit due to the load of the starter motor. I agree cap issue does not explain no injector ...

IIRC 9V is a bit low; it is about the threshold at which the ECU won't work reliably on cranking. I'd suggest checking the battery and the battery connections. If you have a really good battery, it'd be simplest just to try that. cheers Update. Fully charged battery, i get 9.4v on startup which sho...

I suggested this before but maybe it is worth having another look at the 'start' signal on pin 4 of the ECU. No volts when cranking means no sparks, no nothing, with an otherwise functional car. Just like you are seeing, everything tests good but the car won't start. cheers Hi, i got a steady 9v dc...

Another area that springs to mind is the obsolutely awful period alarm system fitted with huge red LED's in the doors and massive key lock to the boot. I have never even touched this in 15 years, but could this heap of crap be interrupting things somewhere....out of the blue... Ian Have you got the...

Alarm systems usually interrupt the 12V signal from the ignition switch to the starter. Most likely your case as the older systems were not sophisticated enough to interrupt ecu functions. In short, a fault in the alarm system would likely prevent cranking of the engine altogether. Ralph Cool that ...

Ian, I know this maybe a "granny sucking eggs" but I had a similar problem a long time ago and it was the carbon rod in the centre of the cap that had broken down. Just a thought. Hi Ron, yes looks like I will be diving deeper into the ignition bits, already had the cap off and rotor, che...

Ian what tells the ecu to pulse the injectors? I know you've been here already but I'm wondering what the techs did to get the ecu to pulse this output? The Reference and Speed sensors And they're supplied voltage by the ecu? Dont think so, they are hall effect devices that produce voltage dependen...

Update

Ok, Further update. Swapped ECU kindly provided by Boyd. No Spark, no ignition. I have a small issue with the main ignition lead from coil to cap, its a bit dodgy reading OK then infinite with ohm meter. I have removed the 1000 ohm cap and lead tests fine but still no spark. I'll change for a new ca...

Been following this with interest. Double check the the coil HT lead is firmly connected in the coil.
