Re: steering wheel alignment
and now I am following the Bentley manual for reinstalling it in the correct position. The manual says to line up the mark on the steering column shaft to the mark on the steering gear housing. Well even Bentley says NOT to do what you say. Your confusing visually cetnered position when driving as ...

Re: steering wheel alignment
Perhaps I didn't explain it well, but I think the OP is talking specifically about his steering wheel, not an actual alignment. All I was explaining was getting the steering wheel aligned with the steering. If he is talking about an alignment, then you are correct. Otherwise, my method has been fla...

Re: Tire Size Combination
Looking good. One thing I would highly recommend is that you clean and scrub (scotch bright pad) the bead seal area (maybe lightly sand) until smooth and put a fresh coat of paint there too. I've seen older aluminum wheels get so rough from corrosion and/or full of old tire bits you never get rid of...

Re: steering wheel alignment
I go to a large parking lot or unused road. I put the steering wheel on with the nut finger tight, then drive the car straight, then move the steering wheel on the splines accordingly. Obviously you come to a stop before you move the steering wheel on the splines. :) That is the wrong/lazy way to d...

Re: steering wheel alignment
That ring with the pointer sort of thing on it is a dust shield and it is attached to and moves with the steering column. While there is no definitive mark on the steering box you line it up with the center of the casting the best you can. It may fall slightly to one side or the other but get it as ...

Re: Tire Size Combination
After comparing a 235/45/17 to a 225/60/15 which I know to rub Everyone has probably at one time been prone to overthink this. I'm going to say the 225/60/15 was simply too tall by almost 1" inch (1/2" radius) and probably rubbed on the spring perch. Stock tires were never more than 25&qu...

Re: Minor Wandering Idle Question
I imagine the euro spec car has both higher compression and different engine management/tune but someone else would need to verify that. Not at all surprised you would say they idle a bit differently and they should run differently too. Your US spec car with catalyst is probably identical to my 86 5...

Re: 3 piece conversions....
BMW didn't have trouble with the two-piece wheels, they had trouble with the air-seal on the M635 three-piece 415mm TRX wheels which they replaced with a one piece wheel. I guess I remembered that wrong. Sorry. I love the concept and the results are very cool. I've even thought myself there must be...

Re: 3 piece conversions....
Agreed. Beautiful. DOT or any other entity approved I doubt. Not trying to be a naysayer, just realize it's an 'experimental' wheel. You know that BMW had trouble with the first two-piece M6 wheels of similar construction and replaced with one piece for 'safety' reasons.

Re: Minor Wandering Idle Question
Actually they are supposed to wander maybe 50 rpm when warm and in closed loop idle control based on the O2 sensor. The electronics on these cars are just that slow that it takes 3-5 seconds for it to over and under adjust the mixture. Maybe it gets a bit worse with age but to prove it to yourself s...

Re: Silver Grey Speaker Pod Restoration & Paint Color
I recolored my speaker pods with Leatherique dye/paint and I thought they turned out great with good adhesion. Might be a little glossy but the color spot on IMO. Anyway much better than the discolored brown that was creeping over them like a flesh eating bacteria :) However I looked at my records a...

Re: 86 635CSI engine randomly cuts out
If not mentioned when the cars instantly dies it must be electrical on the ignition/computer side. You can pull the fuel pump relay or fuse and it will still run briefly off residual pressure. Fuel loss is not instantaneous unless it's injector pulse. On the speed and reference sensors one can be un...

Re: Tired of lowered car
Other options might be some thicker spring pads or simple spacers on the strut mounts that allow you to use what you have but gain some height. IIRC there were spring pads for cars going to countries with poor roads and maybe find them in the e30 parts bin listing for the front since it's all the sa...

Re: 88 Tow Hook Cover Part# Mystery
I received my new parts and it still puzzles me. The part # molded on the piece ends in 467. Sort of follows the 468 I found on the other side. Apparently 467 is 469 & 468 is 470 So maybe these are mold numbers or maybe it is the part number before it gets a coat of primer on it. The new part is...

Re: 88 Tow Hook Cover Part# Mystery
I am going to just go ahead an order what the listing shows but maybe you have missed my point. Yes it shows 51 71 1 967 469 for the left and 470 for the right... BUT... my right tow hook cover has a part number molded on it 51 71 1 967 468 and no directory or listing I find shows that as a valid pa...

Somehow I've missed it every time. Not intentional and I'm not as active here as mye28 but appreciate this site.
Still would like to get the right part ordered for my car if someone knows why the other side of my car has a part # that has no look up ?

No one has any ideas? Is anyone with a post 87 willing to pop one of the covers loose and copy down the part number on either the driver's or passenger side? Please. I'd really like to be sure I get the right thing rather than find out I have something rare they put on 27 cars. fwiw I think mine loo...

Re: BMW original paint - need advice!
I do hope you will be happy with the end result. My paintwork is so limited and rare that with the precautions I take I'm not that worried. However, if if I did it daily or for a living it all becomes quite important. My brother and I did a reasonable amount of painting way back as youths and I thin...

Re: BMW original paint - need advice!
I'm just curious what you mean by cellulose ? The only paint work I've done last few years is with 2 component Urethane and I don't know why you wouldn't just by an organic vapor mask and use that. It is so durable by comparison to anything else that with all the effort you put in you want it durabl...

Re: Completely confused as to why my engine isn't running right
Back to the crank sensors just in case. About 1000 ohms between 1&2 is correct. Wire 3 is simply a shield with no connection at the far end and you should get >100k ohms or megohms or infinite between it and anything else. Another way to test the crank sensors is with your meter on AC volts betw...

88 Tow Hook Cover Part# Mystery
Last time I drove my M6 I hit some kind of small animal. Realized later that it cracked a bracket for the fog light (repaired with epoxy) and the little cover next to it was long gone. If I had stopped right away maybe I could have found it but didn't as it was night on a narrow (no shoulder) countr...

Re: Brake fluid light flashing when braking?
But as Brucey said there are also sensors on the hydroboost. Best guess you have one of the pressure sensors going off every time you apply brakes the pressure drops before it can recharge. It might be the sign of a bad brake bomb - the nitrogen charged accumulator on the hydroboost system. Can you ...

Children's book... "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie"... should be required reading.
Don't forget to also polish the journal and if their is any sort of groove consider setting the new seal a little deeper. You want it to be even though not crooked or it accelerates wear.
