Re: 1981 635CSi - Ascot Grau

Now 20 miles on the car, I am starting to believe the rebuild was a success-- the engine is running smoothly and slowly smoking less and less! I suspect the oil consumption is just burning off of oil from the exhaust manifolds that were on the car with the other cylinder head (the one that was crack...

Re: 1981 635CSi - Ascot Grau

Found the nut for one of the eccentrics to be stripped. Replaced that and the engine quieted down nicely. =D> Went around the block now just over 10 km's. It drives quite nicely and shifts better than I expected. the suspension is sure cushy and soft with whatever sway bars are on it. Found some mor...

Re: 1981 635CSi - Ascot Grau

I got the car back together and started. Later style fan clutch and water pump in place. and all of it running M1.3 from an E34. It seems one of the valves is really noisy and I suspect it is the one valve that the eccentric nut wouldn't seem to tighten properly on cylinder 4. will investigate here ...

Great job in the repairs-- interesting to see mine looks pretty similar in terms of rust and age-- maybe less rust to repair although I don't know that I can do it like you did.

Car looks great!

If it is the original engine, it wouldn't be an M90.

I have used the torque method before and have had good luck so I would use it for all m30s. Recommended from some users on mye28.com

Yes, I had purchased one a year ago when I was working in my '80 head rebuild. I used elring and new it was the right gasket. Had to send proof of title to get the gasket from Europe.

More progress today. I was able to install the cylinder head on the car and get it torqued down as well as the intake manifold reinstalled. http://drive4corners.com/wp-content/usergallery/hashtag/DSC_1184.jpg http://drive4corners.com/wp-content/usergallery/hashtag/DSC_1187.jpg http://drive4corners.c...

Sure thing. Sorry I can't help with finding center caps. From what I understand, they are difficult to source.

Re: E34 540i Brake Upgrade

There shouldn't be much travel with that MC. Are you sure that it is fully bled? If you push the pedal 20 times, does it get rock hard, or does it still remain slightly squishy? If so, that would suggest air is still somewhere in the system.

Re: 1981 635CSi - Ascot Grau

Pulled the cylinder head and found two cracks which would explain some of the burning oil. ](*,)

I have sourced another M90 head with the correct cam and hope to reinstall later this week.

May be a tough fit on the front, I'm not sure. You will rub at full lock and the tires will be stretched, but 225/45/17 should be your best bet.

Rear won't be a problem, even with wide tires.

Head removal is progressing. Hoping to pull the head off tomorrow morning. I have everything removed except the head bolts. May remove the exhaust manifolds, not sure yet. Here are a few photos, although they are rather poor quality, you get the idea. Under the knife, I thought I'd be in this positi...

Might be worth posting locally on CL or somewhere.

For any potential buyers here, you can't expect offers if you haven't shown photos of the cosmetic damage you described.

I did get the windows all working with some connections being repaired inside the doors. I pulled it in to the garage yesterday and have started tearing the engine apart to rebuild the head. It smokes badly coming up to a stop light on decel and all symptoms point to valve guide seals. Good vacuum o...

Re: Where have all the parts gone?

It happens as the cars get older and the demand diminishes. BMW is in the business, not sourcing parts just to keep our old vehicles on the road.

Unfortunate, but the way it is. Look at 02's and E3/E9's. Those are hard to find parts for.

Re: Swapping 86/86 sport seats into 88/89 car - anyone done it

It should be possible. The big difference may be if it has the memory or not. I imagine that will mean slightly different connector, but wire colors may be the same between the two.

1981 635CSi - Ascot Grau

So a couple of years ago I stumbled upon an early euro 635 a ways outside of Denver. After some back and forth I ended up looking at it and eventually purchasing it. It was actually a one owner car, the owner's dad had bought it new or very close to new and then imported it in to the US (Fred Mintur...
