Re: High Idle

If the FPR has been replaced there's no reason not to connect the vacuum line to it. It needs the FPR to be working for the ECU to balance the air/fuel mix. When the FPR has no vacuum it defaults to full pressure in the rail, and that will cause a rich condition the ECU cannot overcome.

1. Yes 2. No, but it'd be a good time to change it. 3. Yes, but more to maintain the shape while in storage. 4. Cross-reference it using Realoem.com, then search the latest part number on Google. You'll get many vendors that carry it. As to brand, I'd stick with one of the European-made ones, but av...

Personal opinion: you'd be a fool not to change the seal now. I mean, it's RIGHT THERE. When will you have this opportunity again?

It was unused from mid-August 2017 until January 26th of this year. Sean says the bearing had been bad for quite a while. Amber had been driving her mom's Passat to work. I'm gradually getting stuff done. I got the old inner races off the hubs last night, cleaned the hubs up and painted them. Headed...

Put a pressure gauge on the fuel line and test it. Flow means nothing if you don't have sufficient pressure. Pumping unrestricted into a bucket can show plenty of flow even from a dying fuel pump.

These are the caps I was referring to. They fit in the hole in the raised hub. But get the metal OEM ones, not plastic like these.

Very cool car, and a bargain for someone. Good luck with sale. The salvage title can be a deal killer some places, but not in others. Depends on the 'why' of it having a salvage title. You can end up with a salvage title in California if the car is stolen and then recovered, even if it had zero dama...

Welcome to the insanity! Nice color! Chestnut is semi-rare.

You figured it out....BBS or BMW center cap if you're running without the 'weave cap. The cap from "bottle cap" wheels ( Style 13) might work.

@ Pod: No, I'm crazy, too. Not the first time I've bought something untested and driven it long distance home. Kind of like Rob Siegel. I at least knew the history of this car, having been working on it, off-and-on, for 8 years. @ olympia57: yessiree, good eye, my friend!... the puller plate ...

I wish the Nakamichi head unit that came with my '85 worked, but it was toast. Not economically justifiable to repair. :(

Indeed. And I had to drive it 140 miles home after purchase. I had no option to trailer/ship it. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I got it home.

Re: E12 ECU question

At that point I checked for voltage at the injectors thinking that it's my Cold Start Injector that's causing the brief rev of the motor. I was right...no Voltage at any of the six injectors. That is a large clue. The injectors have 12 volts on one leg continuously any time the key is in the run po...

Re: Gonna be gone for a while

Thanks so much for the prayers and well wishes. I am doing really well! I've felt well enough to get back to work on BMW projects. I tire out easily, so pacing and having help are key to getting anything done. I'm not much of an inspiration. My cancer is pretty minor compared to my younger brother's...

No E24 content, but this was scary

I got another BMW recently, an E36 M3. It was very obvious the right rear wheel bearing needed replacement. It was VERY noisy. I had some help today to get it apart. For those who haven't had the 'pleasure' of changing an E36 rear wheel bearing, it is the most miserable maintenance job on an E36. I ...

Re: Motor mount replacement interval?

Since I've never changed mounts on an automatic E24, I don't know, but I'd guess yes. The mounts on both the engine and transmission are similar enough I doubt there'd be much difference.

Re: Motor mount replacement interval?

Advice from someone who's done it: Do the transmission mounts and engine mounts at the same time. Do ONE SIDE at a time. That way the engine mounts don't bind up like they will with the entire engine jacked up.

Re: Gonna be gone for a while

Kathy continues to improve. She's still doing breathing treatments. Some days she has no problem getting around. Other days she get out of breath very easily. They said it would be 6 months or so before she gets back to normal. I'm taking my third (of 6) treatment tomorrow. They aren't as bad as I a...

Re: Starter Issues on Manual Car

If you have 12v at the terminal of the black/yellow wire when the key is turned to start, you either have a faulty new starter, or the black/yellow wire is connected to the wrong terminal on the solenoid (the "unloader" circuit).

Re: No power to in-tank fuel pump

Yes, your outside pump (which is the high pressure pump) is kaput. The description of the car running for 10-15 minutes and then dying, along with the fuel pump fuse blowing, points to a seriously overworked and overheated pump. By the way, the outside pump was never intended to be operated without ...
