87 automatic -- I might be selling it...

Any opinions out there for the value of an '87 635 with 80,000 documented miles. Bronzit exterior, high quality respray, 100% straight body, black leather in great condition. I've freshened up the mechanicals (exhaust, brakes, front end rebuild, etc.) but a few minor mechanicals need some TLC (one r...

Re: Strut inserts and rear shocks....DIY job?

Brucey, thanks for all the tips. With the front of the car on jack stands, using a lever I was able to feel some looseness in both front struts. Wheel bearings are tight, so not them. all the control arms and tie rod ends are relatively new. It feels as though there is either about 1/8 inch of un-da...

Re: Strut inserts and rear shocks....DIY job?

Brucey, it would be foolish to not replace 34-year old front mounts while it's all apart, right? I just gave the rear shocks a bounce test, and they felt smoother and tighter than the fronts, so perhaps the rear mounts are in better shape. Will take a look. Have to remove the rear top mounts in any ...

Strut inserts and rear shocks....DIY job?

A few questions: I'm pretty handy....I've rebuilt my front suspension, except for the strut inserts and mounts. Is new strut inserts and mounts a DIY job? Will have to take in the shop of alignment, so could just have them do it... would I be wishing I had them do it? also, replace rear shocks while...

Re: wind noise ... how to hush it down a bit??

Still had a bit too much road noise coming from the passenger side. Putting a thin piece of paper between the body and the bottom of the door, and closing the door, was able to easily slide the paper out without much/any resistance. The other door was tight, as were the window seals. looking closely...

Re: wind noise ... how to hush it down a bit??

Has anyone installed new door/window seals -- the ones that go all the way around and sit in a tight channel?

How difficult is it?

Re: wind noise ... how to hush it down a bit??

Tracked down another source of wind noise. The vertical louvered plastic part that attaches to the B pillar between the front and rear window had come loose, allowing wind to whistle in/around it. Used some trim adhesive to reattach it. Getting quieter with each step. Still might try some dynamat in...

Re: wind noise ... how to hush it down a bit??

Well, I moved the door catch post in a tad tighter on the body, and that took care of the slight gap I had between the body and the bottom of the door.

might still try a little dynamat inside the doors. will let you know if/when...

Re: wind noise ... how to hush it down a bit??

Ahhh, it also appears that my passenger door may have a bit of a gap at the bottom rear of the door, down by the rocker panel. The door lines up perfectly with the body at the top of the door, but is sits a bit proud on the bottom. All the seals appear to be in good condition. Should I move the bott...

Re: wind noise ... how to hush it down a bit??

Has anyone used Dynamat or other sound-proofing stuff to the doors? that might help a bit.....

Are the door panels easy to remove or a PIA?

Re: Need help with door latch, will not latch (video inside)

lately my '87 has been difficult to close the passenger door. I really have to push it hard for the latch to catch. it always closes partially, but it really takes a strong push for it to latch closed. when I do get it closed, the door aligns perfectly with the body. The plastic cap is missing.....w...

Re: Leather seat bottom is hard, and padding is flat....

To prop things up a bit on the seat bottom, I inserted a piece of carpet between the springs and the padding. It helped quite a bit, and was an easy temporary "fix".

Re: Heater control valve goes hot and cold, nothing in between

Easy fix, and I feel like a dope....

Apparently when locking down the hood lever inside the car (with my foot), I believe my shoe or toe got caught on the connector for the temp sensor. Was dangling freely.

All better now. Not to self.....close and lock the hood down more thoughtfully!

Heater control valve goes hot and cold, nothing in between

It appears that when I move the heater temp control off of the "off/cool" position, I only get completely hot air from the heater. It used to modulate the temperature correctly, so something went haywire.

Any clues for where to look?

Heater fan started humming a bit. Took off the cowling cover and put a little lube on the fan motor bearings. all quiet now, at least for the time being.

Re: door locks work some weeks, some weeks they don't

Thanks, Ralph. will try to track down as many connections as I can.

The control unit is somewhere under the dash up behind the glove box, I think. Sill check those connections too.

Additional suggestions are welcome. . .

Merry Christmas to all!

Re: door locks work some weeks, some weeks they don't

still doing the same thing..... electric door locks just stop working. If I remove and reinsert the fuse into the box, they all work properly again......for a while.

all the wiring looks intact, nothing loose, nothing obvious.

any thoughts or ideas?

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?

Thanks! Easy Off, huh? Do I have to remove the bumper and take it apart to isolate the aluminum strip? or can I carefully do it while still on the car?

any other hints or how/to info?

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?

Yesterday I pulled out the driver's seat and fixed (shortened) the cable sheaths that hold the drive cables for the seat back adjustment. While it was out, I took two Tylenols (man that sucker is heavy) and then inserted a piece of old carpet between the zigzag springs and the seat bottom cushion pa...

Re: wind noise ... how to hush it down a bit??

here's an off-the-wall idea.... if wind noise is coming from the body/rain channel above and in front of the side windows, has anyone tried to quiet it down and streamline it by plugging that channel with a piece of black rubber tubing? just took a 400-mile trip on a windy day, and the noise was ann...

Leather seat bottom is hard, and padding is flat....

I think I have the "comfort" seats, but the leather bottom is hard as can be, and the padding underneath is not very thick.... Does anyone have an estimate of what it takes to replace the bottom leather piece, and rebuild with new foam? I've seen the post with the $310 seat pad.... is this...
