Re: Transmission control unit
That's the thing. There is no clunk or any sound whatsoever when the lever is moved to the R position. Shouldn't there be a noise of some kind if the transmission parts including the valve body and clutch plates etc. are being told to activate reverse? The lack of any noise makes me think the proble...

Transmission control unit
The transmission on my auto 1989 635Csi worked fine with no problems whatsoever...smooth shifts every time. However with 120,000 miles on it I decided to do a little preventive maintenance and change the trans fluid and filter. Put it all back together very carefully (three times) but no matter what...

Re: Mysterious non start problem
I have had a complete printed version of the 1988 Electrical Troubleshooting Manual for five years. All I can find is a wiring diagram showing how the relay is hooked up to the system but no actual info as to where its physical location is within the car. Maybe I am missing something but currently a...

Re: Mysterious non start problem
Can someone please post a photo of some sort of diagram showing where the start relay is located on a 1988 635 Csi. Another poster put up photos of relays from and 1985 and mentioned running a second black/yellow wire to the starter solenoid but search as I might nothing in my car looked the same as...

Re: Mysterious non start problem
OK back on this problem after dealing with family issues. Removed the drivers side kick panel and could see ONLY two black large size relays. Could not see any black/yellow wires. So to the person that said the starter relay is there I wonder if the configuration is different for the 88 - 89 cars co...

pgh880: Thanks for the photo and info. Going to my warehouse tomorrow to see if I can find the relay and them the the BMW dealer. First replace the relay and them the secondary wire through the firewall to the stater.

Re: Mysterious non start problem
pgh880: Thanks so much for this solution. However how do I identify the start relay? There is a lot of stuff under the dash board. Can I trace a particular colored wire(s) from the ignition switch? What gauge was the new wire you ran?

Re: Mysterious non start problem
What I just can't fathom is why a jump from a running vehicle works and a jump from a jumper box designed to start cars or a monster of a 900 CCA truck battery do not even cause the starter to move or the solenoid to click. Baffling. What could be the difference? Electricity is electricity. In all t...

Re: Mysterious non start problem
Nothing happens. No click no rotation of starter when there is an attempted start now with a brand new battery, a 900 CCA battery jumped into the system. The ONLY thing that works every time is a jump from a running vehicle.

Mysterious non start problem
1988 BMW 635 Csi automatic The problem has baffled my mechanic, the battery shop, friends and myself. With a new battery the car started every time for a while. Then it gradually starts less frequently until is requires a jumper box and then not even then. They only thing that will get the car to st...

No reverse
Decided to change the filter and trans fluid and clean the valve body and filter screen on my 1989 635 Csi because it was starting to shift a bit roughly. I did the same thing on my 1988 635 Csi and all went well. However with the 1989 things went haywire. First time only first and second gears and ...

Need advice replacing Dr door lock
Finally got the drivers door replacement door lock assembly. Now I cannot get it reinstalled. I found a video on Youtube but it only shows the disassembly and then the reassembly outside the car but nothing about how to get the dam thing back in place. I have tried every seemingly possible angle and...

Broken Dr Door cam/escutcheon
Turned the key in the drivers door of my 1988 635 Csi, something snapped and could no longer open or lock/unlock the door. It appears one of the two ears on the die cast/zamak piece I'll call an escutcheon that surrounds the lock cylinder broke off. Can anyone direct me to a source for either just t...

Blown headgasket
Took my 121,000 mile immaculate 1989 635 Csi out for a cruise recently and the head gasket blew. Trying to fix it myself but having a terrible time getting the intake manifold off the head. The nuts on the underside of the intake runners are driving me crazy. I have tried every combination of thin w...

one or two piece drive shaft
The drive shaft's front U joint went out on my auto trans 1988 635 Csi. A company I am thinking about buying from is showing a two piece "dogleg" drive shaft for 1985 - 1989 cars. My car has a one piece drive shaft. Are they wrong? Has my car been modified or is just their catalog picture ...

Identifying Getrag trans
I purchased a disassembled E24 parts car mainly for the sport seats. The seller said it was an '85 with a Getrag 265 5 speed transmission and 175K miles. The trans was in the trunk. I cannot find any stamping or embossing on it that says 265. GETRAG is embossed on the passenger side of the case and ...

No air from heater/defroster
I can't figure out why there is no air from the heater or defroster when I rotate the right hand large round knob on the center console. I replaced the blower motor brushes (I checked it on the bench before reinstalling), K1 relay, fuses and the low speed fan resistor. I get air when I turn on the A...

I did a search and read the process for turning off the SRS warning light but the photo of the SRS control module was no longer available. Could someone please post another photo of the module and a description of its' location in the dashboard?
Thanks in advance for any assistance offered.

Re: Coolant warning light
I've doubled checked both cars ('88 and '89 635 Csi auto). The coolant warning light goes out when I fill the overflow tanks to the top.but comes back on later. When I check the coolant level it has gone down below the recommended level to the point where the float on the sensor is bottomed out and ...

Re: Coolant warning light
When I filled the overflow tank to the very top the check light went out. A day later it came on again. When I checked the level in the overflow tank it was very low and the float on the sensor shaft was as low as it could go and not floating. So either I have a cooling system leak (which I see no s...

Coolant warning light
The coolant warning lights (located on the rectangular panel to the left of the steering column) on both my '88 and '89 635 Csi will not turn off. I replaced the sensor/float that screws into the radiator overflow tank with new parts. I cleaned the contacts on the two wire plug going to the sensor a...

Re: 89 635 csi no start
I had what seems like the same problem with my '88 635 Csi - starts for a second and then dies. It turned out to be microscopic cracks in some solder joints inside the ECU. There is tech article that describes how to remove and open up the ECU and points out the three solder joints attached to a alu...

Brucey: Thanks for the reply. Seems I remember reading that the trans ECU is in the dash near the steering column. Is that where the sensors you mention are located also? Hmm, I was under there yesterday trying to get the stupid cardboard panel to fit up higher so as not to interfere with the clutch...
