Re: Getrag 260 prop for M30 in 635

Well Rob ended up buying two decrepit propshafts out of my garage loft, and what's more he insisted on paying for them! Thanks Rob for helping clear some space!! ...and I must also thank Brian and the site also for helping me out when I embarked on classic bmw ownership all those years ago. A donati...

Re: Getrag 260 prop for M30 in 635

Have a couple of (tatty) 80s era BMW prop shafts in my garage. What makes one for a 260 special? Short?

Guess the difference is going to be in the front half of the prop...

Anyway, happy to measure up if you know any dimensions.

Re: M90 questions

When I did mine, the block was true, but the head needed a skim. I don't recall anything standing proud from the head, and I was able to leave the alignment parts in the block in situ. Lowering the rebuilt head has to be done gently and accurately to avoid those alignment parts scoring the newly mac...

Re: M90 questions

Nice work, it's a simple design that, steel bar and angle iron, some drilling and tapping looks about it. No welding?

Is there any protection for the rockers? They're softer than the steel bolts and will be gouged (or worse) as the bolts are tightened

Re: WTB: RHD exhaust downpipe for a series 1 E24 or E12

Hi Pod, I've opted to repair my existing exhaust for the time being. Can you pm me a photo and meausurements of the pipes, and I'll check it'll fit, as I think I need a long term option also.
Cheers

Re: M90 questions

Be interested to see piccies of your iron maiden tool please. I tried to DIY build one also, but it was a hopeless failure! And I ended up stripping and rebuilding the head without the benefit of the tool. +1 on what others have said, I've run an M90 on unleaded with no adverse. I currently run an E...

Yes, think that would do, thanks.
:D
not sure I want to give 100 euros though, looks to be a bit patched together and missing a flange

Will drop a line to see if a deal can be done. Odd to find a RHD specific part in mainland Europe!

Re: WTB: RHD exhaust downpipe for a series 1 E24 or E12

Thanks Bobbo!

Part 2 and 4 are LHD, 1 is for RHD. Difference is to clear the steering box on the RHD cars I think. Different manifolds also, clearly

WTB: RHD exhaust downpipe for a series 1 E24 or E12

Looking for a downpipe for my E9. Having some difficulty finding one but Realoem says it's the same part as on early E24s and E12s. Let me know if you can help.

Thanks :D

Re: Main crankshaft bearing - first oversize +0.25

Hi, do you have a part number for the bearing set you need? I have boxes of NOS dealer supplied crank bearing shells which I picked up at a garage closing down. Some boxes are marked +0.25, but they are for E9 cars. I assume they might transfer to later M30s, but it would be good to check with a par...

Re: Fuel tank expansion tank

Hi Marc, thanks for posting the piccies. Yes, that looks similar to what I remember. An E24 tank won't fit my car I'm afraid, but I have heard that some E9 owners braze on 2 more vent pipes (to get a total of 3) and then fit the plastic evap control vent canister. I was hoping I could work out a way...

Fuel tank expansion tank

Hi all, does anyone know how this works? Part no. 16121117520 I have an E9 which simply vents vapour from the fuel tank down a single small bore hose to the atmosphere. On a warm day my garage stinks of fuel, and this shonky design may be the cause of fuel smells when driving also. I recall that my ...

Re: Block Drain Plug Questions

You'll have worked out that this was the timing chain tensioner!! Coolant drain is much further back on the block, hidden from view from the top by the exhaust manifold If you want to reduce risk of the chain slipping on start up, after you've found the parts and buttoned the tensioner assembly up a...

Re: Any M62 gurus here?

+1 it'll be stripped threads in the alloy head casting (or cam bearing cap, depends which bolt is spinning). The alloy on the M62 heads is very like brie, and it's easy to over-torque these bolts when trying to eliminate oil weeps from the cam cover I have fixed a stripped thread on a bearing cap us...

Re: Cabin fuel smell

different car I appreciate, but on my E9 I noted that when I had the windows open I smelled fuel. I eliminated everything engine related by running the fuel pump without the engine on (jumper the relay) and checked for leaks/ smells under the bonnet. With everything cold any leaks won't evaporate so...

Re: Blown headgasket

FWIW, and not adding anything new here, just repeating what others have said, I've had success using a 1/4" drive with a UJ and a long extension. So 12mm 1/4" socket, then the UJ, then about 9" of extensions then the 1/4" drive. Never thought of using tape to firm up the UJ and s...

Have you seen these that fit on top of the filter Pretty nifty, have you used one? I tried throwing some of my smallest washers in the canister, and the magnetic force holding them to the sides was very weak, so Brucey is right, again  How about some small neodymium magnets stuck on the insid...

Re: Magnet oil filter- DIY style -updated

Undead alert!!! :D A reprise of one of Bruce's (many) greatest hits. So, now doing an oil service on my E9 so I looke...

Re: Temperature gauge indication - running too cool?

An IR thermometer might be useful here. With an engine at running temp the stat housing should be 85-90 C I would think.

Anyone else checked coolant system running temps?

Re: Oil change before or after winter lay-up

Contaminants..... Like you I've only got a few 100 miles on the oil, but it does run quite rich, so probably a bit of unleaded in the sump  Not sure I'm going to get the chance to do the job any time soon, autumn just arrived with a few inches of rain, and I'd always want to do a run before an...
