Re: Unknown connector & wire
The car started fine & drove, but the battery (new Interstate from Costco) is not charging. Before my wife took the car to get gas, she measured the battery voltage. Resting voltage was 12.8V, engine running was 12.3V (I didn't respond in time to tell her not to drive it). The battery light did ...

Re: Unknown connector & wire
Thank you for the quick response. The car did start; he said he was going to take it out for a test drive but I haven't heard back yet. He also did say it looks like it routes towards the transmission. I thought maybe it was a pulse generator as seen in #1 here: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...

Unknown connector & wire
Anyone have an idea as to what this is? This connector (pic 1) was found on the ground. It looks like it sheared off of this wire (pic 2) that is supposed to connect to this connector (pic 3). My mechanic sent me these pictures while he was replacing the starter on the '88 635csi.

Re: Auto to Manual Conversion
I have been considering this swap for my '89 US spec on & off for the past few years. I've compiled an incomplete parts list that hasn't been updated in awhile, & taking into consideration that yours is a euro model, I'm not sure how much will apply but hope it will point you in the right di...

Re: 1989 635csi automatic will not shift into 4th gear
I am fairly convinced my problem is in the TCM (Transmission Control Module) Just opened up the glovebox and the only boxes above it are the Engine and the Airbag Control Units. Can someone tell me where to find the TCM on a 1989 635csi? It seems they moved it for this year. On my '88, the TCM is l...

Re: Hunting/Surging Idle
I had a high idle issue on my '88 w/m30b35 after the car warmed up & driven around (a little above 1k when in D & 1400 when in P). I'm not sure what specifically fixed the issue, but I ending doing the following at the same time: 1. Replaced the two o-rings on the engine oil dipstick (it was...

Re: Belt sizes for '88 w/m30b35?
I would trust engine documentation listed under the E34 more than the E24 for post-6/87 cars just to avoid any potential mislabeling between websites and documents and whatnot. At least, that's what I've started doing personally. Worst case though, 10-20mm difference shouldn't be an issue if you ca...

Re: Low Pressure Power Steering Hoses
To close out this post, my groaning noise & shuddering when turning was due to the PS belt slipping. I noticed it happening when I watched the belt as the noise was occurring. Tightening the PS belt solved the issue.

Re: Low Pressure Power Steering Hoses
There are only 4 return hoses, Regulator/Brake bomb, PSP, Booster, Hydro Gear box. All the others are high pressure Thank you. The bottom four of the list were the correct ones. Someone used a section of heater hose for the one going straight down to the PS pump. Despite replacing all the old hoses...

Low Pressure Power Steering Hoses
I am addressing a groaning noise when starting up & intermittent shuddering when turning. I count four that my '88 635csi needs, but confused by which ones I looked up on realoem. 32411134825 - ? 32411131524 - bottom of PS fluid reservoir to hydro steering box? 34321119071 - one of the smaller h...

Re: Limp mode...
Turns out the resolution to my limp mode issue was a faulty TCM. Not sure of the cause. Car runs well but I had a high idle (~1k RPM) issue. Adjusted my TPS (6-pin) to hear the "click" & tightened in that position to resolve. I am still curious if there is any significant difference be...

Re: Limp mode...
Update: I had the car towed to an independent shop due to starter issues & I asked them to check out the limp mode issue as well. They drained out some ATF to get the correct level & checked the condition of the transmission connector (which was good). Swapped the 179 ECU back to the origina...

Brucey, I was able to remove & crack open the TCU connector thanks to your guidance. Following the symptom table again, I started taking measurements & recorded the following for the Engine Spped & Fuel Rate Input Test: TCU pin 11 = 7.37 V (should be >10 V). Fuel rate gauge does work, so...

Re: Limp mode...
I looked at the TCU connector but could not figure out how to open it up to expose the pins for testing. It has a screw to the right, but it seems access to it is blocked by a black tab of sorts. There's a poor tape job on it & zip ties, so maybe it has been opened up before. There is a seam acr...

Correction, MCU/ECU/DME connector cannot be accessed from the back & requires the universal adapter.
