Re: 1983 633csi interior parts/tech help needed

Thank you for that advice! I ordered 2 of these from Mouser, and they were visibly different from my eBay sourced parts. Not only that, the one I put in actually worked! So now I have a spare. Lessons learned from this fan motor and transistor exercise: 1. Get the transistor from a reputable supply ...

Re: 1983 633csi interior parts/tech help needed

Piggybacking on the blower motor thread: I replaced that transistor only to have it blow again. So I replaced it again using thermal grease (good thing I bought a 5-pack). I also installed a new Bosch fan motor, since the shaft was not spinning freely on the original one. This time the fan worked on...

Re: Blower Replacement with Bosch

Hey kids - Just a warning to BE CAREFUL when doing the boiling water removal technique. When the squirrel cage finally let go, it really let go and splashed boiling water on my hand. My little trip to the neighborhood ER for a 2nd degree scald burn ate up whatever savings I had by buying just the mo...

Thanks for the writeup and info on the steering bracket fix. I just finished installing mine and will find a welder after Christmas. Love reading your story, as I have a daily driver 633, too.

83 633 Muffler - will 85 635 fit?

My 83 633CSi (US) has a leak at the front of the rear muffler, and it needs to be replaced. I have been unable to locate a muffler for this car online anywhere, and two local independent exhaust shops have both informed me that they can't find any either. I have noticed that a muffler for the 85 635...

Surprise Pic on amazon

So I am shopping on amazon in the Automotive department, and I click the link to go to "Your Garage", and it comes up with a stock picture of an R53 Mini Cooper S, since I was shopping those parts. So I change to my 83 E24, and a photo of MY 633CSi is amazon's representative picture! The p...

Re: Whos e24 has a broken odometer? Odometer gears here!

Before anyone gets too carried away here bashing on garagistics and before @songzunhuang beats himself up too badly for reaming out his gear, I would like to say a couple of things in both of their defenses: When I tackled the gears this weekend, I ran into the same problems that @songzunhuang did o...

Re: Can A Rear Muffler Be Bought "a la Carte"?

Does anyone know what makes the rear muffler from an 85 635 (US) different from the 83 633 (US)? I can find a variety of mufflers that claim compatibility with the former but next to nothing for the latter. I am guessing that the tail pipes are slightly larger diameter on the 635 based on the chrome...

The answer is M18x1.5. Also, the assembly is NLA from BMW.

I chased the threads, wiggled the regulator to a better location, and got the pipe reinserted.

Thanks!

Steering/Brake Pressure Hose Thread

Went to replace the brake bomb tonight (83 633 US), and all went fairly well until it came time to reattach the upper (19 mm) flare fitting back into the regulator. I finally discerned that the thread is messed up just enough to prevent it getting started. I would much rather chase these threads tha...

I can't speak to that particular part, but I had a similarly shaped middle box that would rub the driveshaft. I went with dual glass pack resonators in place of it.

for adjustment, see the online workshop manual. Does anyone have a good means of loosening the Phillips head hinge bolts on the body? I got out my biggest Phillips head driver (which fits the head well) and my socket wrench, but it just wanted to strip the head, so I stopped before I did too much d...

Road Trip Reveals a couple of faults...

After a year of daily driving, I took the 6 (83 633 5-speed) on its first weekend road trip of about 350 miles round trip. On the trip down and on the way back there was a problem with the AC, and on the way back there was trouble with the idle. It was sunny with the ambient temperature around 80 de...

I would recommend NOT using Gates hoses for this. I had fitment issues with a Gates hose on the lower radiator. (Water pump pulley tore a hole in it, so I replaced it with BMW hose that fit correctly.)

IIRC from having done this twice about a year ago, you just need to pry the arm off the shaft.

No, the car is stock except for the wheels, which are 15x7 BMW Style 7 with 205/60 tires. I double-checked my paperwork and saw that the front suspension overhaul was actually done 29k miles ago by Lone Star Bavarian, and it included new upper & lower control arms, thrust arm bushing, and transm...

Alignment Question

My '83 633 has excessive wear on the inner tread for all 4 tires, especially the right front, so I am suspecting a toe problem. The previous owner replaced all the bushings in the front end about 20k miles ago. I went to my usual alignment ship this morning only to be told that they don't align BMW'...

Big thanks to all who have contributed to this topic. My Bosch valve had a tear in the diaphragm, so I bought the MTC valve. Re: In need of assistance on a no-start.

Once I do get it to start, it runs fine for a few minutes until it warms up, at which point the idle bounces between 800-1400RPM. It never dies, just lets the idle bounce.
I cured the idle bounce on my car by adjusting the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) properly.

I got the hose replaced last week, and the OEM BMW hose was definitely a different shape than the Gates hose. The Gates had a longer fat section at the water inlet housing that was causing the interference issue. I had also ordered the clamp for the hose, as pictured, but the one that arrived was pl...

New Radiator

The new Behr radiator arrived today, and I thought I would inspect before installing it. I noticed that there are wavy plastic pieces tucked into the cooling tubes. It seems like this would limit the flow through the tubes, but maybe they are there to create some sort of swirl in the tube or maybe p...
