Wizard Cooling radiator
I bought an aluminum rad from Wizard Cooling in New York state recently and, while it's a nice looking piece, fitting it was not straightforward. The #1-949-500 rad is advertised for '87/8 M5/6 and it may fit directly into the M5 but the tight confines of the M6 mean it's not just bolt-in. I initial...

Re: NEW full Aluminum Wizard Cooling Radiator
What I decided to do is cut the existing mounts by about 3/16" on the back sides and trim the steel locking bushing by the same amount. That allowed me the room to squeeze the fan onto the shaft and tighten it up leaving me a comfortable finger-width of clearance on the bottom side of the fan. ...

Re: NEW full Aluminum Wizard Cooling Radiator
I've manged to get a Wizard #1-949-500 rad for '87/8 M5/6 during the Covid shutdown, across the border and into my garage. I've been working on fitting it for a while and decided to check Big Coupe for advice. I searched and found Carlp336's posting and his reference to gaining clearance. Looks like...

Success! Yes, a larger tool and more force, gently applied, allowed it to click into place.rhanley 635csi89 wrote: ↑Tue May 12, 2020 12:19 pm IIRC it takes a LOT of pressure, I almost gave up but finally got it fitted.
You may want to insert a small magnetic in the screen and/or filter area to collect the finest metals.

Thanks folks.
One further question, how much pressure should it take to push the spring down to the lower notch, to get the clip on? It almost seems my spring is too long because I'm struggling, even using a forked tool to push it down.

PSP filter 32-41-1-136-300 question.
I think I may be missing part of the filtering material in my '87 S-38 hydraulic boost pump reservoir.
In this RealOEM diagram, I have everything except filter #17. Is this intended to sit on top of #10/#11 or does it replace them?

I ended up pulling out the radio and jumpering off the power connection for that. A touch of solder, a tiny tie wrap and a little cloth tape and it's all secured and working.

I bought the Ireland Engineering cat back system for my '87 M6. The two muffler, stainless steel system was nice and shiny but the center muffler would not fit properly so I left that out. I had a muffler shop make up two long connecting pipes between the cats and the rear muffler and it sounds grea...

Looking for accessory power.
I have a 1987 USA spec M6 and I'm looking for a switched power source for a low amperage accessory I'm adding. Can anyone suggest an easy to access location, ideally in the drivers (LHD) footwell area?

Re: 87 M6 ignition rotor fit.
I had to order a short 6mm hex socket, since I had none. Now that the correct tool has arrived I was able to easily remove the mount and then brush, scrape, file and sand the corrosion off and the new rotor slides on as it should. That was quite a mess.

Re: 87 M6 ignition rotor fit.
I've only got long 6 mm hex socket. The rad is out but AC still in and no room for a handle on that socket. Tried it with the hex in the bolt and used a Crescent wrench on the hex - no go. I'll have to venture out and see what shops are open. I've got a week before FedEx delivers my new rotor.

87 M6 ignition rotor fit.
I have just attempted to change the ignition rotor on my 1987 M6. The old one's Allen headed bolts were stuck - two days of PB Blaster every few hours would not let me budge them using an Allen key. Last resort? Vice Grips... and yes, the backed off with a whole lot of pressure. Removed the rotor an...

Re: M6 Radiator shop drawing
Wow, two interesting options.
jps635 - All that Wizard Cooling rad needs is two sensor ports and it's GTG.
ron - I've asked my contact at Pro Alloy for a price per unit and at what quantity a price break would occur. Will post details when I get them.
Thanks folks,
Brian

Hello Jay,
Interesting.... I'll have to see if I can get some firm info on an alternate replacement from the dealer. Do you know if it was BMW part or aftermarket?

M6 Radiator shop drawing
Anyone out there that might have a shop drawing that would allow a specialist shop like http://www.proalloy.co.uk/ to make me a custom alu radiator (based upon part #17112226018) for my 01/1987 M6? I purchased a new BMW/Behr rad two years ago to stop a leak that kept me from driving the car for asse...

Re: Exhaust questions.
Let me clarify on the flanges - The fixed flange was proud of the sliding, negating any tolerance adjustment in the sliding joint. The joints were not on the same plane horizontally and, within the horizontal plane, one flange (the fixed one) was not square to the plane meaning the flange would not ...

Re: Exhaust questions.
4 or 5 years ago I installed the Ireland Cat back. It's the best exhaust I've had on this car that I owned for 31yrs. Great sound , all stainless, made in China but for $500 it's worth it' very good quality. I didn't think it was junk at all. Sorry to hear it didn't work for you. I just rebuilt my ...

Re: Exhaust questions.
I bought the Ireland Engineering, cat back exhaust for my '87 M6. Brought it to my favourite exhaust shop and went underneath with the shop owner. He immediately saw troubles with the build quality of the intermediate muffler - no dip to clear the rear axle and pipe ends were bent askew. After a lot...

Here's a posting for a Hella fog for a Saab but the mounting tabs look correct (or at least usable) for BMW spoiler. I'd be surprised if Hella made different versions. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/HELLA-BMW-E30-E24-L6-M6-635-Csi-Fog-Light-SAAB-900-8377R19-NOS/254205353442?epid=9019635471&hash=item3b2...

Re: Purpose of the 11311308309 diaphragm?
FWIW one method of preventing a lot of flapping around on start-up -and in addition ought to prevent any issues if the engine is turned backwards- (which works with either tensioner type BTW) is to manufacture and install a spacer in the tensioner body. The spacer needs to be sized so that the old ...

Re: Purpose of the 11311308309 diaphragm?
I have just re-installed the original tensioner and the pressure required to deflect the chain between the sprockets is considerably higher. I can still push it down the same amount but the slack is eliminated quickly when I trurn the engine over (clockwise) by hand. Maybe the safe bet might be to j...

Re: Purpose of the 11311308309 diaphragm?
Both tensioners seem to have similar working lengths under hydraulic pressure but the spring on the original has an effect even without oil pressure, constantly providing force. The new unit has only about 1/2" spring extension but without oil pressure it sits fully home. I can see that the ori...

Re: Purpose of the 11311308309 diaphragm?
As I said before if the top run of the chain is as slack as that there is almost certainly a problem of some kind with the tensioning. cheers Unfortunately, I don't have any local resource people with knowledge on the BMW internals - we've only just recently got a Dealer after the last one closed.....

That's going a bit deeper than I'm currently wanting to do. But it is on my plan and it was going to happen after I resolved the intake issues that I'm currently finishing up. The chain may be the one job I'm giving to a specialist.

Re: Purpose of the 11311308309 diaphragm?
if you are able to depress the top run of the chain like that with the tensioner 'installed' it either a) ain't tensioning or b) you have been turning the engine backwards. (V bad idea...) cheers I have turned the engine both forwards and backwards while I was measuring valve clearances... hmmm. Th...
