Re: No Spark 85 635csi - TRIED EVERYTHING

Just to add theat I have raised the non start issue from 99.9% to 100%. Replaced the other original sensor (used a Bosch since the BMW OEM had to come from Germany at three times the price) - Instant start

Re: No Spark 85 635csi - TRIED EVERYTHING

Hi, My M635csi has only failed to start twice in its 37 year life. First time it was one of the rear crankshaft sensors, this time I am 99.9% certain it is the other. It reads open circuit resistance. I write this because you state that you measured 4V on one sensor and a high reading on the other. ...

Re: Crank, no start.

Quick follow-up. Battery charged - still no start. Check original sensor speed/reference sensor ( without grovelling cannot tell which is which) and it has died too. Measure open circuit on all pins, compared with 834ohms on the newer sensor. Always buy original parts - if the replacement lasts 37 y...

Re: Crank, no start.

Good suggestion which I am trying. Weather went from too hot to too wet, so pushed it back into garage where it is now on charge. I put an AGM battery in relatively recently, but have since discovered that they never fully charge on an older wet cell system. Voltage was only 12.4 volts off load, so ...

Crank, no start.

MOT a couple of months ago, then garaged it. Today drove it out of garage, went on a 20 mile journey with a couple of starts and returned to park up in drive, 2 hours later, crank but no start. This is only the second time ever it has not started and the first time it was a position/speed sensor - c...

Re: In-tank fuel pump story

Thought I could add something useful to this thread. Same situation, the in tank pump not running. I separated the plastic halves and cleaned it all up and it runs so well that it sucks up every bit of crud in the tank against the foot filter, which then causes fuel starvation. Presently removingthe...

Re: 15 x 7 wheels to replace TRXs

FWIW I fitted the E38 16" fitted with 245/45 tyres but found you needed a 5mm spacer because of the 23mm IS of the E38 wheels. In turn, because the wheel has an inner chamfer, a plain spacer leaves the wheel scarcely engaged on the hub, and is relying on the bolts to centre and support the whee...

Re: Tacho inop.

Hi All, Delighted to report that systematic fault finding on the cluster revealed the problem. It was a 100u/16v small can electrolytic that decided to go short circuit after 30 years. Diagnosis was aided by powering the unit from a bench current limited power supply. Measuring voltages and ohming o...

Re: Tacho inop.

Tks Brucey, The only thing i am wondering is - because the SI batteries went to a ' half-charged state, is the SI processor confused. Typical of uP devices, it might need a processor reset, which I assume is not the same as an SI reset, because I want to clear the SI memory as well. Not sure if simp...

Re: Tacho inop.

Hi All, It's my tacho that's not working and I know it's the cluster because Ron ( Thank you Ron ) lent me another cluster to try and the tacho works. I do not know exactly how the tacho movement is driven - there are four connections which appear to be 2 and 2. One pair, if you apply a 1.5V battery...

M635CSi#354 Now ready for viewing

I posted the question - restore or sell some 6 months ago. This was settled when dozens of people wanted a 'barn find' at bottom price so they could collect their 'winnings', including one person who wanted to turn up with a trailer and claimed there was £10K of work. In fact I spent just over £3k r...

Re: behr wing cell compressor rebuild

Hi Jay, Well, I've been on this a week and posted what I know. The manufacturer is Nihon model DKV-14B and Santech list most parts. I believe Four Seasons rebuild it too. What do you think of my idea of using a 'roughed up' stainless pan scourer. It shouldn't break up and should hold oil where the h...

Re: Low side AC port on 1986 M635?

I know this is an old post, but I am searching for all info on M635 air con, and compressor/R134A conversion. My M635 June 86 has the pipe with the low pressure port and a 45 deg bend. This is correct for the M635 with the Bosch/Behr 'wing cell' compressor. I suspect the PO changed the pipe because ...

Re: inside a Behr/Bosch Wing Cell Compressor

Yes, I bought mine from Celer AB in Sweden a long time ago. I think they are the seals that 4 Seasons use to rebuild their range of compressors. There is also a seal kit for the shaft, also green R12/R134a. However, there is no mention in either kit of the presence of the plastic gauze. I am by now ...

inside a Behr/Bosch Wing Cell Compressor

BMW say this compressor fitted to M635Csi is not R134a compatible. I have it apart to replace all the seals with Green R134A seals. Everything else is metal, so it can only be a question of pressure/vs speed i.e. R134A effectiveness. However, there is one item inside the compressor which no-one has ...

Re: behr wing cell compressor rebuild

I'm of the school that believes things are there for a reason. IMG_0364.JPG Assuming the function is to give the oil something to cling on to, rather than sit in the bottom of the compressor, I thought about using a stanless steel pot scourer ( after it has been turned into a 'Sideshow Bob' look. Th...

behr wing cell compressor rebuild

Some time ago (10 years) I obtained a R134A rebuild kit for the compressor on my M635. I have just dismantled the compressor and find there is a piece of open cell foam as a sort of filter. It also seems to serve the purpose of holding oil. This was not in the rebuild kit but everything else was, in...

Re: m technic rear spoiler removal

Tks Ron, Is that after you've removed the spoiler or can you get to the bolts without removing it? I didn't mention that two of the four visible external screws are foobar'd, and would need to be retapped for new screws. It's the upper ones which always seem to seize. Hence removing the complete spo...
