Re: Cheap gasoline..

When I filled up a week ago, it was $2.24/gallon for no-ethanol 91. Prices have been dropping like a rock for the past month. Mercifully, too, since I have another 900 mile trip coming up in just over a week

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?

Changed out the battery and did an oil change this weekend! And I did something I should've done last time I had the valve cover off in June: clean, Loctite, and properly torque the oil spray bar banjo bolts (I did to about 65in-lb, around 7Nm). While it was on the lift, I checked all the bolts on t...

Re: frontend friday :)

It snowed on Monday! First snow my car has seen; last year just saw slight freezing rain. Thankfully (sadly?) none of the snow stuck to the ground, so no water collecting and no rust. Fingers crossed it doesn't get worse [-o<

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?

I had a pretty good day at the salvage yard yesterday and today.. I'll start with the smallest pleasures. I found a couple interesting items in various BMWs around the lot. First, a velcro sticker explaining how to stow 3 golf clubs in your Ultimate Driving Machine's boot :P The other being a nifty ...

Re: how many 635's have you encounter? (Encountered)

A bit late with this one, but I spotted an '85 Euro-spec 635 taking the same route as me in evening rush hour a bit over a month ago. Looked super clean inside and out, but wasn't the biggest fan of the choice of wheels. But who am I to judge when there are so few of us? We ended up stopped on the s...

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?

I'm always late to post my updates, but this past weekend I did my engine and transmission fluid services! What tranny fluid did you use? I used some off-the-shelf STP Multi-Purpose DexII/III. It was something like $23 for a gallon, and so far it's been quite alright. I'd like to know how different...

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?

Gave mine a much needed wash and wax on Sunday. Next time will probably be in over a month due to my hectic fall schedule, so I hope the wax doesn't get washed away too quickly  Next time I beautify the car, I plan to go a bit crazy and spend a couple days doing it. In addition to the wash/wax...

Re: Look what the Ozzies did

Might not be my (or many people's) cup of tea, but it's impossible to argue that the work was done poorly. It's all top-notch and looks like it could've come from the factory like that, aside from the velcro felt covering the shifter pattern #-o

Re: Transmission Fluid Opinions

I recently did a fluid drain on my autobox as well, and I just used some bog standard STP Dex III ATF. From all the digging and reading of various forums, I found the general consensus to be that you don't gain much from crazy additives or even name brand vs generic brands due to the Dexron/Mercon c...

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?

I'm always late to post my updates, but this past weekend I did my engine and transmission fluid services! Engine went smooth, especially since I had it on a professional lift. Did my normal service (4qts Valvoline 20w-50 VR1, 1qt Lucas Heavy Duty oil stabilizer, STP S2965A filter). I normally chang...

Who did you order the tires from?
I ordered them through Tirerack and had them delivered to a local tire shop. Made things super simple. Not many street tires in that size anymore, so I'm happy to have a (so far) good experience with them. More miles will tell, but I'm a fan so far [-o<

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?

Lots of stuff over the weekend! First up was replacing the Pitman arm bushings that were nothing more than metal dogbones at this point. Probably original to the car, there was no bushing material left. You could shake and twist them around however you wanted with the car on the ground  How i...

Re: Lowering advice please

To adjust height, I decided to re-position the lever arm that clamps on to the anti-roll bar. By rotating it forward or backward, you effectively "trick" the control module into thinking the ride height is higher/lower than it needs to be, and will adjust the fluid pressure to achieve the desired he...

Re: Lowering advice please

Thanks Onthefritz. I may look into your option. So it dropped the front and then you adjusted the rear to match? Did you upgrade front strut inserts to make up for the slightly ‘softer’ e30 spring? That's basically how it happened. At the time, I was experimenting with the rear ride height trying t...

Stunning looking car.
Thanks! Of course I know every single blemish on every square mm, but even I'm in shock sometimes that the car is as clean as it is for its age. It cleans up well, for sure. At least the previous owners did something right

The paint match is amazing between the 30 year old paint and fresh stuff; the old paint...

Re: Tell us what type of motor oil you prefer?

I guess there's always some oil hiding away somewhere or something.. #-o You might wanna look into removing and manually flushing your engine oil cooler behind the front bumper. It sounds like it's completely clogged with 20 y.o. oil that is slowly turing into coal. Oil cooler? I thought that was m...

Re: Tell us what type of motor oil you prefer?

Fritz, if you're only putting 5 quarts in, better check your dipstick, as mine takes 6.25 quarts, per the manuals and dipstick [-X I remember reading that and buying 6 quarts the first time I did an oil change on it. I started pouring oil in until it rose up to smack dab in the middle of the dipsti...

Re: Tell us what type of motor oil you prefer?

I use Valvoline VR1 20w-50, even with my cat still in place. I hardly burn oil, so I don't think it's going to be an issue for a while. I also put in a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer as added protection against cold starts, especially in winter. Temperatures swing massively between summer and winter ...

Re: Massive vibration under heavy braking

The last time they would've been lubed would be when the disks and pads were replaced last October, but I don't remember if they were lubed or not. They at least weren't wiggling around when I checked them last, but that might have changed since. What kind of grease is best to use there?

Re: Massive vibration under heavy braking

Waud, No need to worry, these are just the regular 15in OE wheels for the E24. I’ve double and triple checked my pig bolts being tight, tire pressures, etc. I get more symptoms through the brakes (e.g. a pulsing squeak while driving, speeds up/slows down with speed, changes while cornering/going ove...

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?

Definitely go gold stripes on that colour scheme you've got going on there. Or better yet go the full house John Player Special Gold Leaf racing colour scheme! Believe me, that JPS livery is definitely an inspiration! I'm definitely leaning toward gold though, I think it'll add that extra "pop" or ...
