Re: Ressurecting the Air Conditioning

To wrap this one up - my a/c now works - I'm kind of surprised as I thought it might never work - but it does and quite well. Here's a summary of what I did; 1. My system was missing the dryer, pressure switch and a long section of pre formed pipe. 2. I bought a new dryer, pressure switch and replac...

Re: Heater valve wanted uk

I've used the cheapo ones off eBay twice and they've been fine. Pretty easy to change over and at a fraction of the price I think they're worth the risk. The genuine parts are obviously not that great anyway.

Re: OBC Questions

Thanks to James for lending me his OBC. When I plugged it in it worked fine. It seems like quite a common fault that the display goes blank - I think it's the electronics in this instance. Got a used replacement on it's way, you can actually still buy them new for around £500.

Re: Expansion tank level going up...

...there's a bit more...

Most of the gauges started plying up so I ordered a batteryless ProGrama SI board - now the temp needle smoothly rises and stays dead on in the middle.

The fuel situation is not so good though!

Batteryless SI board

After a batteryless SI board, with LED SI function. They are on eBay but with an extortionate $50 shipping plus import duty to the UK. Anyone have a spare they want to sell me?

Re: Expansion tank level going up...

To conclude this thread - it was the viscous fan coupling of course. It now holds temperature fine. It's good to know that my head gasket is fine though!

Re: OBC Questions

Did some more investigation into the lack of OBC display today. Wiring looks okay, can't find a fault - the backlight functions but no LCD characters at all. I can get a new display as TBM's link, but do displays loose their LCD totally and suddenly like this? Is the OBC display the same on an E30? ...

Turns out the viscous fan isn't engaging...new coupling on order

Does the electric fan only come on with the a/c?

Re: Expansion tank level going up...

Unfortunately the pulley is NLA, I'll have to keep an eye on eBay... I carried out the hydrocarbon test today - the engine needs to be run for at least 2 minute, if hydrocarbons are present the blue liquid turns yellow. The photo below is after 7 minutes - good news! HCT.jpg Afterwards I blew the li...

Re: Expansion tank level going up...

Thanks TBM! I have dabbled with Evans, the flushing side of things puts me off, but in principle I like the idea of it very much. I've ordered a hydrocarbon tester so within the next few days I will be able to confirm if it's a HG issue. If so it's annoying, but not the worst job in the world. I wil...

Expansion tank level going up...

My car isn't back on the road yet so I've not given it a good test, but I have driven it up and down the drive and run it many times. The engine runs very nicely with no issues apart from one... After about half an hour of idling the expansion tank fills up right to the top - this is when I normally...

OBC Questions

I have a UK 85 M635... I removed some aftermarket audio wiring from under the dash and found that the red/green wires which supply power to the radio, interior lights etc had all been messed with - I repaired and re-joined them all and everything worked...apart from the OBC display - illuminated but...

Re: Ressurecting the Air Conditioning

Thanks TBM, really useful advice and interesting links - especially the electric a/c - I guess that will be the future of air con. I've used a company before called Fen Air https://www.fenair.co.uk for an early 60's Quattreporte - the fan on that car was like something off an ice cream fridge...and ...

Re: Ressurecting the Air Conditioning

I've made quite a bit of progress over the last week. I took out all the old a/c equipment, flushed the pipes and condenser for reuse, flushed and cleaned and dried all the parts. I inspected the compressor, replaced the faulty fan control switch, re-wrapped the insulated pipes, reinstalled everythi...

Re: 1986 635 csi in London

Sounds like a good plan! The rear sills are a common rust point, a bit of work to sort out but it's a good feeling when done. They do have quite a lot of electrics for an 80's car...but at least the engines isn't covered in plastic.
