Re: E24 / E23 ABS Pump/Valve Assembly

Thanks Ron! According to Real OEM the part numbers are: 34511154995 superseding 34511150357 I have been offered a 'known good' e28 m535i ABS unit for £100 and on RealOEM the drawings appear identical but part number is different (34511155051, although this might be down to the cover) so I don't know...

E24 / E23 ABS Pump/Valve Assembly

Hi All,

I need an ABS unit for my M635CSI restoration project. It uses the same pump as all the E24 series, as well as the E23. Anyone have a known good unit I can buy please? This is all that stands between me and getting the car back on the road.

Thanks,
Ian

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

Based upon the fact that after following Nigel's procedure I appeared initially to have fixed the issue but it then reappeared I started researching ABS linked sinking pedal issues and found THIS LINK . As I have replaced everything in the whole braking system, tested and retested the MC, bled and r...

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

Finally got a chance to cycle the ABS system today, although it was not as elegant as Nigel's solution (a bit more Heath Robinson TBH) it worked well. All four corners cycled and bled, as per Nigel's excellent write-up. Whilst I was sceptical that this would fix my issues it was something I wanted t...

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

Cheers Brucey, I was wondering if it was worth introducing a little air into the closed circuit pipes I made to join the 2 outputs and repeating first. I.E to ensure there is a similar initial pedal movement to the point where the brakes are fully applied However, can any of you do me a favour pleas...

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

Thanks Brucey. Yes, that aligns with what I was thinking too. However, I was wondering if it was worth repeating the exercise but leaving a little air in the system so my pedal (i.e. MC) moves enough for the hydraulic boost to fully kick in and I can check this is not an issue of MC seals leaking un...

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

Thanks Nigel, that is a great write-up and nice piece of work. Thanks! So,I finally got to run Brucey's test today. I made up a pair of male to male short brake pipes, screwed them into the two outputs on the master cylinder and joined them together using a female to female connector. I bled the sys...

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

Hi Nigel, Any news on this please? I started a new job earlier this month so the brakes have been on hold (no pun intended). However, this weekend I plan to try Brucey's suggestion to connect the 2 outputs directly to try and eliminate any other potential factors. Before this I would like to cycle t...

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

The eBay Seller was called: aj4151 but has long since disappeared. However, when I click on the url below i get taken to a page of the same plugs but a new seller name: asc_group It might be that the two are not linked and eBay are just sending me to a new, sponsored supplier who sells the same item...

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

Hi Ian, I know what you mean by e-bay purchases! but it is a genuine ATE master cylinder which is the same as the one fitted from new by the factory, carries the same part number and came from a brake specialist company in Germany. I don't think it is fake but I do think it is faulty! cheers Nigel....

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

one test you could easily do is to make up a short line that just connects the output ports to one another and thus blanks the MC off. If (having been bled) the pedal still sinks then you have your answer about whether the MC is faulty or not. The accumulator seems to be working fine, from your des...

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

Thanks chaps,

I guess the only way forward is for me to buy another MC, just to see if the brand new BMW MC is faulty.

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

Today's workshop observations: In the vague (desperate) hope that re-bleeding the system might help, I enlisted the help of my wife and followed the BMW Workshop way: Attach reservoir pressurisation kit at <2bar. Press and hold brake pedal down. Attach bleed pipe/jar and open furthest bleed nipple....

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

Hi All, Apologies for the lack of response but I have been camping with the kids... Brucey: I will have a look for any signs of shredded rubber flecks in the oil and try to see if I can see any difference in the levels when I push the pedal with the engine running. BMW are saying two things at prese...

Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

Thanks Brucey, That's pretty much what I was thinking too. The MC internal seals must be letting fluid past for the pedal to sink under pressure. However, I spoke to my local BMW dealer (whom have been supplying all my parts, including the MC) and the technicians there seem to think the culprit may ...

Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

OK, I spoke too soon on the previous thread. Got up early today to fit the wheels and in-tank pump, ready for the car's first MOT for many years. All was going well until I started the car up for the run to the MOT: I noticed that whilst I have a good solid brake pedal with the engine off, as soon a...

Re: Brake Fluid Recommendations and Bleeding ABS

I have a pedal! Don't know what you guys were worried about.... :) I used a pressurised EasyBleed system at 20Lb/Sq" and bled the system as a 'normal' car. IE started at the furthest wheel, left rear then right rear, left front and so on. Initially I thought I was in trouble as the left rear was not...

Re: How to identify M635CSI diff casing please.

Hi Rob,

I got a few quotes and they range between 350 and 500 quid. The guy I chose, mainly because he is only 30 minutes away, quoted me £395 including new bearings and seals. I will let you know how I get on.

Cheers,
Ian

Re: Brake Fluid Recommendations and Bleeding ABS

Interesting information in the BMW E24 Manual I found a link to. It says you connect the charging system (I.E. Easy Bleed) to the MC, push and hold down the brake pedal, open the bleed valve on the furthest caliper away (presumably with bleed pipe attached and submersed), pump the brake 12 times the...

Re: Brake Fluid Recommendations and Bleeding ABS

Thanks Brucey! Great info. I particularly like the idea of running the car on stands (my car is currently on 4x 6 ton lorry stands) and fooling the ABS unit into thinking the wheels have locked. Will the fact that the fronts are not turning but the rears are be enough to trigger the ABS pumps or doe...

Re: How to identify M635CSI diff casing please.

They are indeed. The guy doing the swap for me used to have a brand new E23/E24 LSD in his workshop but ended up using it as a donor for parts. Imagine what that diff would be worth today! I was talking to a guy in Germany who had a low mileage M5 LSD but he wanted €LOTS for it. The 745 / 750 (and p...

Brake Fluid Recommendations and Bleeding ABS

Hi All, I am halfway through the M635 brake refurb. New BMW MC and all new steel lines, custom Goodridge SS hoses, rebuilt and coated calipers, EBC discs and Redstuff pads etc. The only things I will retain are the ABS unit and fluid reservoir (currently in the dishwasher with the washer bottles- do...
