Re: 628csi Igntion system queries
the fuel injection ECU has precious little to do with the ignition system, so that would be the last thing I'd look at. That you have wet plugs and fuel smell may just mean that the cold start system is working (BTW when cranking it doesn't carry on spraying fuel indefinitely, that is what the therm...

Re: High Speed - Steering is Very Loose
Late comer to this thread! I've already got 16 x 0" wheels on my Group C tribute but they still don't fill out the guards - not much choice but to go with a larger negative offset or spacers - which will give me a positive scrub radius. Is there any way to dial this out by modifying the suspen...

Re: Surging Idle L-Jet m30b32
set the throttle body to the factory specs, then set the TPS, then set the fixed air bypass. You should (in the absence of other air leaks) find that the wrong setting causes wrong idle speed and/or 'hunting'. You need to check the setting with both a cold/loaded engine (which needs more air) and a ...

Re: 628csi Igntion system queries
628 CSI runs LE-Jetronic. Most of the info you will find in relation to E24 relates to Motronic in its various guises, and whilst some parts are similar (like the cold start injector function using a thermotime switch), you'll get nowhere fast if you try and use motronic as a guide. In relation to y...

Re: Help with hot running m88
the best way to check the radiator for flow is to compare it with a new one of the same type on a test stand, i.e. to measure the pressure drop at fixed flow. Some radiator repair shops have such a thing but not all. You can approximate to this at home by simply running a hose into one end of the ra...

If you have not done so before now, I'd check the radiator is flowing water well enough and isn't partially clogged.

Re: My M635 is eating main relays
when you stop the car for a few minutes then odd things can happen; for example the fuel in the fuel rail can boil inside a hot engine bay and this can (if the check valve in the pump is bad) push the fuel back through the pickup lines. Remember that the pressure will get to 3bar before it opens the...

Re: Uneven front tyre wear
the distance between the built in swivels in the E28/E24 centre track rod (which the steering box and idler arm connect to) is ~49.5cm. The track rod mounting tapers are inclined but are each set about 3.5cm further out. I don't have an E34 one to hand to compare but it is longer than that.

Re: That alt light thread again.
seeing the hood is probably overrated in terms of raw lap times (in a lot -most- proper race cars you can't see the hood) but can be useful when you are running close to others, or just getting used to things. Lowering the seat a couple of inches can have a noticeable (beneficial) effect on the over...

the electrical parts on view in the photo are (I think);
bottom left = central locking switch
bottom right = lock heater switch (actuated by door handle)
top left = wires for lock barrel heater

Re: That alt light thread again.
shame about the alternator. FWIW if you have the same fault again, check the slip rings/brushes; quite often these cause bad charging too. With the new alternator you might want to specify a 14.4V regulator rather than a 13.8V one as originally used; 14.4V is needed for fully charging most modern ba...

Re: Uneven front tyre wear
Even though I thought I had solved the tyre wear issue by replacing some worn bushings I still have excessive negative camber causing wear on the inside edge of both front tyres. Looking at the front end with the car over a pit at the wheel alignment specialists, there is no more camber adjustment ...

Re: stuck door!
a (possibly stupid) thought; is the lock heater etc only on the driver's door (RH door in the UK/Aus/Japan, LH door in most other places). And does that more often (or always?) come with a metal arm etc? My dim sixteen-year old memory is that my (~4/87 build) RH/driver's door had a positive retentio...

Re: stuck door!
I found this picture http://bigcoupe.com/phpBB2/files/lock_5_169.jpg which shows an alternate (later?) version with a metal arm. However it also includes a spring-preloaded telescoping section in the locking control rod, which presumably allows the CL actuator to fire and not turn the lock cylinder ...

thanks Baders, I shall try pulling the thing off when I get the chance. However there are two notches near the centre of the near arm which look as if they are meant to do something...? I guess I'll find out (again; my memory doesn't quite stretch back sixteen years...) how it all works. For modific...

culprit revealed ('85 build date, left side door lock shown); Image01522.jpg The two white plastic arms on the lock barrel are different to one another. The rearward one is a) connected to the locking mechanism (including the CL actuator, which normally moves it) b) free-turning on its mountings, an...

Re: carpet under AC unit
thanks Pod, that is useful. I confess, I've made life more difficult for myself by not dismantling the centre console; I just slackened the screws on the side trim and pulled the carpet out from underneath. So this is bound to make the carpet less easy to refit. But the part under the AC unit defini...

Re: M6 Sputter under load when cold
other than being a potential site for air leaks (for unmetered air because it has hoses and potential leak sites) the ICV cannot affect running under load; all it does (even if it fails entirely) is affect how much air goes through the throttle butterflies and how much through the ICV; it should all...

carpet under AC unit
the almost inevitable tin worm has recently necessitated some welding in the footwell area, and that meant pulling the carpet back. I was vaguely concerned by the fact that it took some force to pull the carpet out from beneath the AC unit. Needless to say I now can't get it back in again. Is there ...

Re: Thermostat and Pulse Generator(camshaft sensor)??
As before, this sensor is not needed for the engine to run. It simply reports it's signal to the diagnostic plug. yep, you can take this sensor and chuck it in the bin if you like; it only does anything useful when (if) someone plugs in a (now antique) BMW service computer into your car. welcome aboard! First the good news; you have a couple of nice cars there. Now for the bad news; builds after 5/82 are (mechanically) E28 based and builds prior to that date are E12 based; the cars may look the same but nearly every part is different and I think you have one of each. Actually you ma...

Re: Surging Idle L-Jet m30b32
most likely there is a big air leak and/or fixed air bypass setting is wrong, and when the engine is warm, there is too much air getting into the engine, such that the overrun fuel cutoff starts to kick in (which happens anytime you have a closed throttle and the engine speed is above a certain spee...

Re: 85' 635csi | Cranks but no Spark
NB when you say 'checked' you mean with a meter? If so this is 'necessary but not sufficient' . Feeds need to be checked under load if you want to be sure of their integrity. The typical failure mode of the main relay is that it still clicks, still tests OK with DVM, but has an iffy contact inside i...
