Re: No start after lowering car off of jack stands
the main relay has dual outputs. If you have fuel pressure then at least one of the outputs is 'good' (i.e. supports a load) and the fuel pump relay is closing etc. One possible explanation is that the other main relay output is 'bad', i.e. it may measure 12V but when loaded it doesn't supply curren...

Re: No start after lowering car off of jack stands
do you have spark in both 'crank' and 'run'? Even if the engine doesn't fire in 'start' you ought to be able to see sparks as the engine comes to a standstill in 'run', especially if you are cranking the engine over without spark plugs in. There should be fuel on the plugs if you have been cranking,...

Re: No start after lowering car off of jack stands
apologies if this is obvious but if you have had the car with the doors open and/or the radio on for a few hours, the battery might be partly discharged. The voltage at the injectors might be further weakened by a slightly bad feed from the main relay. You can have a good spark, good fuel pressure ,...

pressure bottles vary; some have a screw threaded cap and others have a bayonet. You need the matching cap, obviously.

the adaptor blocks bolt to the holes in the side of the sheet metal part. Re: Which Bilstein struts?
BTW one thing I forgot to mention; spring rates. Standard BMW springs are rising rate springs i.e. they are pretty soft initially (about 200 lb/in) but the end coils soon become coilbound at the end two turns, leaving fewer 'active turns' and thus are ~20-30% stiffer than you might expect when compr...

Re: G265 Sheet Metal Shifter looks weird
IIRC there are two small aluminium adaptor blocks, each of which has two 6mm dia holes in it, (edit; maybe they are actually 8mm...?) which are set at right angles to one another. One hole secures the adaptor to the back of the gearbox, the other to the sheet metal 'console'. ISTR that you can see t...

Re: Which Bilstein struts?
as noted above the M6/M635CSi suspension is no more than 20mm lower than stock. Sometimes it is a bit higher than that so 15mm is close too.

Re: Which Bilstein struts?
last time l looked (IIRC) B4 are twintube shocks (like the OEM boge units) and valving is similar (they may be identical; IIRC boge was taken over by Bilstein's parent company...?). These shocks use external bump stops front and rear. If you change knackered shocks for these it will feel like a new ...

Re: Purpose of the 11311308309 diaphragm?
IIRC with the later tensioner and a new chain/guides, the spring pressure is active on the chain for the last half inch or so as the tensioner is installed. That yours isn't doing this strongly suggests that the chain and/or the tensioner blade is/are worn and really need renewal. FWIW one method of...

Re: Anybody know what this tool does?
IIRC this looks like a tool which is meant for use with a drill when setting woodscrews into wood, one-handed. The receptacle inside the tool takes a hex bit which fits the screws you are using. The head of the screw is held captive against the hex bit by the ball bearings, but not so firmly that th...

Re: Purpose of the 11311308309 diaphragm?
in your photo it doesn't look as if you are having to push hard to get that amount of slack; if so this indicates the chain isn't tensioned properly. Suggestion; is it possible that the chain/slipper is worn and the new tensioner simply isn't tensioning the chain because it doesn't have enough strok...

Re: Purpose of the 11311308309 diaphragm?
don't turn the engine backwards, even when checking the valve clearances. There is no need anyway. As I said before if the top run of the chain is as slack as that there is almost certainly a problem of some kind with the tensioning. If in doubt have someone else take a look at it; there's only so m...

Re: opinion on chain/sprocket, please
the parts you can see don't look too bad. Unfortunately they are not the bits that wear fastest. Thus if you want to be sure of the condition of the parts then you need to look at the ones that wear fastest. This would be the tensioning slipper face (the upper part of the longer (lower) section) and...

Re: Spark plug socket
if you don't have a lathe you can get by (for jobs like this) if you have an electric drill and an angle grinder. Just mount the socket in the drill chuck (eg using a 3/8" bolt) and then spin the socket up. Bring the angle grinder wheel to bear against the spinning socket and have at it. With c...

stuck door!
one of the many things that has happened recently is that I have not been able to work on my project car. This means the door has not been opened for some time. IIRC it was reluctant to close when I last closed it, too. Anyway I recently tried to open it and it was no-go; the key turns but wouldn't ...

Re: Thermo Time switch
IIRC the part for early motronic is similar to ones fitted to later motronic; the difference lies in the time and temperature rating. If you fit the wrong rating of thermotime switch it is only a problem if a) the temperature is between the two ratings and/or b) the car cranks but doesn't start for ...

if you are looking at 635CSi in Europe then there are three main versions E12 base; short stroke motor with either L-jet or motronic fuelling. Numerous other variations with date. Built to 5/82. Re: My M635 is eating main relays
BTW if the contacts are burning out in the fuel pump relay then you could have an intermittent dead short in the power feed to the fuel pump and/or a fuel pump that is on the verge of stalling (eg through a bad FPR or a blocked filter), and is therefore drawing far more current than normal.

Re: Purpose of the 11311308309 diaphragm?
if you are able to depress the top run of the chain like that with the tensioner 'installed' it either a) ain't tensioning or b) you have been turning the engine backwards. (V bad idea...) FWIW the diaphragm unit is a secondary damper. The main problem with the original tensioner in M88 and S38 engi...
