5-speed swap: does it add to car's value?

I've owned my E24 for over 20 years and am seriously considering a 5-speed swap. In fact, I have virtually everything needed to do a top-quality swap including a good Getrag 265/6, new driveshaft, clutch, and many other new parts. I generally don't think of the cars I own as investments, but realist...

Re: SuperSprint Perf Exhaust Experience?

Again, not an M6 but I installed a Supersprint muffler and resonator on my 635 over 10 years ago. It's strictly a fair-weather car and I've driven it only 5-8K miles since then so I can't really comment on the durability of the system, but it sounds great at full throttle without being overly loud a...

Re: Transmission conversion costs

You can probably keep the price for parts well under $1000 if you're able to locate a donor car with a good transmission, but chances are you'll want to buy some new parts anyway (such as a clutch and maybe a driveshaft) to avoid finding yourself under the car soon afterwards to replace normal wear ...

Re: Questions re: Manual Sport Seats

Thanks Ralph. For the past couple weeks I've been on a steep learning curve about E24 seats and now realize these aren't the ones I'm going to use. In fact, the bolt pattern on them indicates they were out of an E30 and required the use of adapters in whatever E24 they were removed from. For now I'v...

Will these match the bolt pattern for all E24s or only the early, pre-1984 models?

WTB: Center Console (Handbrake Cover) for Manual Seats

I'm in need of the center console (Items #1 and #2); must be for MANUAL seats (i.e., no cutouts for power seat switches) and in excellent condition: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=5351-EUR-01-1985-E24-BMW-635CSi&diagId=51_1112 Prefer Pacific Blue, but I'll also consider other color...

Questions re: Manual Sport Seats

I just scored a pair of E24 manual sport seats needing restoration. After looking them over, one thing isn't clear to me: how do you properly separate the brackets/rails from the bottom of the seats? They don't seem to just bolt up to the bottom of the seats, as is the case with comfort seats. Also,...

Re: Recaro Seats

I'm in the market for some manual sport seats (or Recaros) and would possibly be interested in these, if it weren't for the shipping costs/hassles. I've also been searching for a shop that specializes in restoring Recaros; there used to be a place in Tacoma, WA but unfortunately they went out of bus...

Re: '84 633Csi cruise control control box location

You sure it's not there? The CC unit on my '85 635 is indeed above and to the left of the glove box, inside a plastic sleeve which is attached to the framework behind the dash. It's rather difficult to find unless you know exactly what you're looking for, but it wasn't hard to access for removal. I ...

Re: Vibration from new propshaft

I recently purchased a brand new propshaft from BMW for the manual swap I have planned for my E24. This discussion has me concerned, especially considering the poor quality I've been experiencing lately with some BMW replacement parts (see the thread on "heater valves"). I think as a preca...

Re: Heater Control Valve

I had already returned mine so I couldn't snap a photo. That's what mine looked like, although I didn't take it apart to discover the missing spring. If you had installed yours, it probably would have leaked as mine did. I've emailed BMW about my experience including the part # of the faulty part; I...

Re: Heater Control Valve

Update: The dealer sent me another heater control valve, which also leaks. I've noticed that both of them came in boxes that say "Made in China" so evidently BMW has recently sent production of these valves offshore, and is now experiencing quality control problems. Maybe they're being ass...

Re: Heater Control Valve

I just replaced my heater control valve assembly (Pt. # 64111373191) with a supposedly new OEM unit and it leaks profusely where the upper and lower parts of the plastic body are joined. You can plug the outlet port with your thumb, blow into the inlet port, and feel air coming out around the seam. ...

Nice set of wheels for a very reasonable price. I'd be all over these if I didn't already have a set.

Free bump, BTW.

Re: WTB: Hydraulic Line for Clutch

Buy a small brake line from Autozone, etc. That way the flare is done on one end. Bend around anything round for a nice radiused bend.. Flare the other end, remembering all hydraulic lines are double flared. Should take you all of 15 minutes to do...providing you have a flaring tool that can do a d...

WTB: Hydraulic Line for Clutch

Hello, I'm preparing for a manual swap on my '85 E24, and looking for part #10. It attaches to the clutch master cylinder where it exits the firewall: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=5374-USA-01-1985-E24-BMW-635CSi&diagId=21_0049 Evidently the original part is NLA; I can form a new ...

Re: Cruise Control Inop; Noise from Actuator

OK, just an update on this issue. The problem was not in the Actuator, but in the Control Unit which is located above and to the left of the glove box. The are plenty of used ones on eBay for $30-$60 but I decided to buy a remanufactured, tested, and guaranteed unit from ProgRama in Florida for $75....

Cruise Control Inop; Noise from Actuator

I'm getting a "clacking" sound accompanied by a strong vibration coming from my cruise control actuator (item #1 in the RealOEM link below); this occurs when I first turn the key to start the car, as well as when I try to set the cruise control while driving. When I step on the brake the c...
