Re: Parts suppliers Rockauto
I recently read how Rockauto works. Their website is an aggregation of dealers and distributors. That's why you see shipping from multiple warehouses. But at least you get options as to manufacturers and brands. All of it gets shipped from that local warehouse. As to applicability, you are dependent...

Flood cars
I'm watching the disaster of hurricane Ian in south Florida. I've gone to see a number of car collections in prior years and was planning to see a few more this winter (AACA Winter Nationals in Miami) plus the frequent Cars N Coffee events. But seeing floating and flooded cars (and even fire engines...

Ever try to mount a goPro type camera to check your suspension movement? Might be useful. BTW the news has everyone leaving California. No water, no electricity, too hot, etc. Good luck with the move.

Re: Paint Estimate?
Not bad from my perspective. I had an estimate 3 years ago for $20k of which $5 was materials, $10k labor and $5 for contingencies such as parts, hidden rust repairs, etc. This was on Long Island, a high cost area and it was a reputable restoration shop.

If it's empty, it's not a filter. Does your car have the carbon filled fuel vapor accumulator?

I have Hagerty insurance. In some states they will give the policy holder the agreed value and if you elect this option (but not in NY), the insured can keep the car. But in that case the owner may end up with a "Salvage Title" I think you have avoided that last problem.

Kudos to your local FD for limiting the loss. It could have been far worse. What was the suspected failure point to keep the pump running? Ignition switch? Relay in the ebox?

I like the way Rockauto give you a choice of the supplier in most cases to avoid the truly terrible ones. I have also ordered from BMW of South Atlanta for BMW/OEM parts.

The lesson on these rescues is to use your Hagerty or AAA towing benefit to flatbed the car to a safe spot or home garage. The couple of $$ is really worth it.

If you can get a screw extractor into the square drive you can fit a small socket over the other end of the extractor if I understand the problem.

I've been cleaning out my R&T , C&D and Car Life collection after saving them for over 40 years. But I have been cutting out relevant stories BMW, Datsun Z cars, Chevelle Super Sports) and will scan the BMW ones for the BC crowd.
Re: Louvers?
Rather than going up into a high pressure area at the scuttle, how about exiting aft of the front wheels. NACA style ducts come to mind. Also look at the 1955 MB 300SL. You might try the wool knitting thread analysis. We did that with tell-tails on my racing boat (J-24 for you sailors) to optimize a...

Now that you've treated the inside, what is the plan for the exterior? I'm thinking of SEM Trim Black Matte. I think I will use it on plastic parts in the engine compartment such as the air cleaner box cover. There are 4 related products from SEM: SEM Soap, SEM Plastic Prep, SEM Adhesion Promoter an...

I would go with Formica or its equivalent. Will not absorb oil and is scuff resistant, but not scuff proof. A sheet of it, contact cement and a router edge trimmer. Many places sell laminated countertops with readymade edges and backsplashes that can be a workbench.

Song,
My shaft seal is leaking on the other side which only has the shaft but no control rod. I will replace both at the same time for good measure. I've been looking at a Hakko or knock off station that is temperature controlled with a variety of tips and of course a strong magnifier.
Regards,
Ken

Song,
When you replaced the transmission cross shaft seal, was there a nut or washer to hold the seal in place? Mine is leaking and it doesn't look like it has either. Let me know as I have the seals.

With Hagerty insurance in some states, you can reclaim the vehicle from them for a nominal deduction from the proceeds. Not however in New York. Insurance is regulated state-by-state.

Song, Pre-pandemic I had a quote to do a full repaint with all the glass out for $20k. Of that, $5k was for materials, $10k for labor and $5k for parts such as trims, seals and unknowns. You may be able to paint the hood, nose and fender yourself. This time work in a paint booth to control the dust ...
