Also, Make sure your AAA membership is current, get a list of BMW dealers along the way. Fix anything that causes a vibration (which will make the trip a torture). Buy the two wrenches on ebay to remove the clutch a 5 minute job. Spend 10 minutes cleaning the fan blades. Use the lower temp stat. That takes half an hour to drain the rad, pull the old one clean the mating surface, install the new, refill and test for leaks. Time includes at least 1 beer. You may...

Is your engine compartment clean or does it look like S**t? If the former, your OC behavior would have motivated you to change it, if the latter, you are being true to yourself.

Greg, You want to keep the joint dry before you apply the silicone. Permatex makes a "Flowable Silicone Windshield & Glass Sealer" (Advance Auto). There are actually two joints: the metal edge or lip that the gasket sits on and the groove in the gasket that the glass rides in. Lisle To...

Then they lubed up the new gasket and ...

If the original adhesive is thermoset, try using a household iron with a thin cloth between the sole and the part to avoid burning or scorching. I haven't had this problem yet but as a first step you'd avoid hypos and holes and getting the right glue.
Let's hear how it goes.
