Re: Radiator: BMW brand vs. aftermarket?
Wizard is the only way to go. https://wizardcooling.com/1980-88-bmw-e24-custom-aluminum-radiator/ The idea of a quality, all-aluminum radiator is very appealing but I've read there have been some fitment problems with these. What was your experience during installation? Also, these are reportedly s...

Re: Radiator: BMW brand vs. aftermarket?
Both the Behr radiator and Sachs fan clutch are brand new. The fan clutch is working properly. When I pull the radiator I'm going to have it flow-tested.

Re: Radiator: BMW brand vs. aftermarket?
I had read somewhere that they have a cheaper line for the aftermarket/DIY market. I'm guessing the difference is thinner material, leading to a shorter life span. Do you have the original to count and compare the cooling tubes? That may be the answer.... BMW-branded radiators are significantly mor...

Radiator: BMW brand vs. aftermarket?
I recently installed a Behr radiator in my E24 and my engine seems to be running warmer. It doesn't get close to the red zone, but the temperature fluctuates quite a bit, between the 10:30 - 1:00 positions on the gauge depending on the load and speed. At idle and on a flat highway it's fine, but goi...

Re: Tell us what type of motor oil you prefer?
I've been running Redline 20W-50 in my E24 since I purchased it in 1997, and in my E28 since 2014. A Redline rep once told me that their 10W-40 synthetic would be fine in an M30, but I prefer the extra insurance of 20W-50 especially in the warm climate where I live. I drive each car no more than a f...

Beautiful color combo and nice work! As someone who's taken a bath on the sale of several objects of passion over the years, I'd encourage you to try and make some other kind of sacrifice than to sell this car. It sounds like it's been a real labor of love for you. At least don't sell unless you can...

Supersprint. But it'll cost you; lots more expensive than taking parts off your car.

Re: Floor Mat Foam Coming Off Solution
So I bought a 1 quart can of Flex-Seal and used a roller to apply it. The finished job looks quite durable although honestly it's not visually appealing. Of course, nobody sees the underside of the mats in the car anyway so there's that. Another coat would probably give them a more "finished&qu...

Re: crickets, squeaking noise
Try to isolate which motor the noise is coming from. The A/C blower is inside the dash, while the fresh air/heater blower is just forward of the cowl and is much easier to change. Mine (fresh air blower) was making the same irritating squeaking noise; cleaning and lubing the bearings didn't help so ...

Re: Floor Mat Foam Coming Off Solution
I'm trying to save my BMW floor mats and this looks like a great solution, assuming it works.
For anybody that's used the Flex Seal brand spray foam, how well does it hold up over time? I wouldn't want anything that flakes off and gets stuck in the carpet like the foam from the O.E mats did.

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
A few weeks ago I finally had a manual conversion done to my car, which has lived as an automatic under my ownership since 1997. For the past couple of years, working with REALOEM, I've been gradually accumulating virtually all the parts needed, many of them new. I sought out and hired someone very ...

Re: Opinions on these wheels, please?
I'm running 245/40-17 tires on BBS RS198 wheels (17 x 8.5 x 13ET) all around, without issues. That said, I have come to think that 40-series tires may be just a bit too low a profile for these cars, mainly because of the extra stress they place on suspension components. I think next time I buy tires...

Re: 1988 Auto to Manual Swap
It would be a good idea to install new seals (input shaft, output shaft, and selector rod) before installing the tranny. You don't want to finish the swap only to discover that you have leaks, and it's much easier to do on the bench than once it's in the car. Bentley describes the procedure. Most se...

Re: Ralph in Socal - Outstanding guy
I want to get up to date and add my appreciation to Ralph for helping me out in the recent past, both with some parts I needed for my 5-speed conversion (now finally done!) and a correct gearbox for one of my power seats. He's the kind of guy who really comes through, someone you can trust.

So sorry to hear this. I never met him, but I do know he was a major contributor to this and other forums over the years. Good people like him who selflessly share a passion for cars is what breathes life into these forums. My deepest condolences to his friends and family.

Re: Finding and testing Heater Valve
I've recently purchased two new heater valves from the dealer, and both of them leaked profusely. These are now made in China. A rebuild kit is the way to go, at least until BMW realizes the quality control problem and corrects it.

I've always liked the BBS RS on 1980s BMWs. Here's mine, with RS 198 (17" X 8.5" X ET13) and 245/40-17 Dunlops.

Re: Improved shifter feel 265/5
No, when I do the swap I want to configure the car the way a manual-tranny version was in '85. Going for as much originality as possible. Besides, I haven't seen any convincing evidence that the aluminum shifter support offers any significant advantages; in fact some people seem to prefer the sheet ...

When you say "rubber dampener", are you referring to this item #10? http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=5374-USA-01-1985-E24-BMW-635CSi&diagId=25_0145 That goofy rubber piece is a weak spot in the overall design of the sheet metal shifter console; it's too flexible and offers ...

Thanks for the replies. I do want to keep the car and do the conversion, and I probably will. I'm just a little apprehensive about finances right now; my daughter just started at university and the costs are a little scary. But I've gone through tough times before. I guess I'll just have to find a w...
