Re: Clunking sound when turning steering wheel

Thanks. As expected, RealOEM uses the very descriptive term "Guide Support".

Re: Clunking sound when turning steering wheel

Strut top bearings are fairly inexpensive and easy to replace. If yours are of unknown age, or show any cracking, it might not be a bad idea to replace just to eliminate that as a possibility. If they are cracking, I bet they have sagged a bit too. Jose (or others): my '88 M6 (build 9/87) occasiona...

Re: Tire pressure - 225/50ZR16 on Style 5's

I'm running 32 psi all round on 225/50/16 Kumho's on 7 x 16 style 5's . Car drives beautifully . Thanks. The reason this came up is because an acquaintance of mine remarked that the tires looked a bit low despite being around this pressure (if not a bit higher). However, he (and I as well) may just...

Re: Re-painting front grille trim?

Do you want the strips to look like the original chrome finish? If so, I'd say the only viable option is the vinyl wrap. If you want the black " shadow lines" look, then primer/paint will do the trick. I've seen some good reviews for Plastikote 615 Chrome Bumper paint, but I'd be totally ...

Re: Re-painting front grille trim?

No, they are metal strips. They can be removed with a pair of long-nosed pliers by bending the locking tangs carefully as they are fragile. Thanks, Ron. This doesn't change my painting strategy a whole lot, other than using the right primer beforehand. If the strips are separable from the grilles, ...

Re-painting front grille trim?

My front grilles (the headlight surrounds; not the kidneys) are looking fairly beat, particularly the "chrome" trim around the edges. Before I jump into buying replacements, I was considering painting them. Just to confirm, though: the "chrome" is just painted plastic, right? If ...

WTB Front grilles in new or near-new condition

Due to long-term "sand blasting" I'm thinking about painting the "chrome" surrounds on my front grilles (#1 and #5 in this diagram ... not the kidneys). Alternatively, if anyone has new or near-new ones available, please drop me a line. Part numbers should be 51131838751 (left) a...

Tire pressure - 225/50ZR16 on Style 5's

Hi guys - forgive me if I missed this during my forum search, but it occurred to me recently that the tire pressures originally recommended for the TRX's on my M6 (see photo) may not be correct for the 225/50ZR16 tires on Style 5 rims that I actually have. Is the size close enough that no adjustment...

Roundel Weekly - Tracked L6

Here's a nice bit on the experiences of an L6 owner who's gotten the track bug. Unsurprisingly he upgraded his engine and tranny to the powertrain from an E28 M5.

Another positive for mauser

To add to previous buyers' positive reviews of dealing with mauser, I'll add my own endorsement: definitely recommend! He quickly sourced a high-quality M-Technik steering wheel for me, and had it re-wrapped in new leather to boot, all for a great price. His communications were frequent and informat...

I have one in good driver condition if your interested, its missing the tri color badge and has black stitching. Shows some wear on the leather and very minor cracks on the left side where it was in the sun. Thanks for the offer. I've got Mauser on the task, and he shipped a wheel to me a few days ...

If one were crafty enough, a woodruff key setup might work. The slots could probably be cut with the appropriate Dremel bit. The steering wheel is likely otherwise trash, so it's likely worth a try. That's a good idea. I'll also talk to a machinist I know to get his opinion on milling out the exist...

WTB Fine-spline M-Technik 1 steering wheel

Since it looks like I screwed up the splines on my current fine-spline M-Technik 1 steering wheel, I'm putting out the feelers for a replacement before resorting to Fleabay. I'd prefer tri-color M stitching, but I'll take what I can get as long as the splines are in good shape.

Stripped steering wheel spline

I'm feeling pretty dumb after incorrectly mounting my fine-spline M-Technik 1 steering wheel and then largely stripping the splines by turning it a few times. It wasn't in 100% condition to start with, and with this bonehead move the spline is in bad shape. Luckily the mating splines on the steering...

No association w/ the seller, etc.

Bring a Trailer Auctions has a nice-looking M6 up for bids, in my favorite color of Royalblau. Will be interesting to see how high this one goes.

Great, that's what I was suspecting. There's a reasonably good seal made between the cover and the filter cartridge, and that should be all that's needed to filter fluid traveling among the hoses connected to the reservoir.

Thanks for the quick reply, Brucey. Due to my over-tired state of mind it hadn't occurred to me to (a) look on another parts fiche site, (b) look for the M635 option, or (c) mention that mine is an '88 M6 (at least that's in my signature!). I'll wait for a few others to chime in, but it looks...

Mystery power steering hose and oil strainer

After putting it off for too long, last weekend I got motivated to find the source of a slow (but persistent) power steering fluid leak. After I emptied the reservoir of fluid and was taking it apart to replace the filter cartridge (#11 on RealOEM reservoir diagram below), I noticed that I didn't ha...
