Re: Valve adjustment specs
there are several factors which influence the recommended valve clearances 1) the extent to which the valves heat up and reduce the running clearance 2) the way in which the valves/valve seats are liable to wear before the next service interval 3) the shape of the 'lead-ins' on the cam profile (thes...

Re: No Start - Cranking - No Fuel - No Spark
from memory this sounds like it might be a fault with the OBC immobiliser relay; this disables the fuel pump if it goes faulty (and yes, they do go faulty).

Re: Exhaust questions.
as pointed out above maybe you tried to fit the wrong thing anyway. But the flanges between the down pipes and the front box and then onto the centre box are meant to be staggered; they don't 'bolt up' with conventional gaskets they use specific seal rings which allow a small amount of articulation ...

it is not going to be an E12 chassis if it has a 1983 build date. So please tell us the exact build date of your car, and whether it was a european or north American spec, or better still the chassis number. It might help if you confirm whether the plug you have photographed is part of the car's wir...

Re: Exhaust questions.
There were two specific issues to the center muffler; 1) the flanges that bolted to the cat were not in the same plane as each other meaning that doubling or tripling up of exhaust gaskets would be required to seal the joints properly..... IME in BMW exhaust pipes staggered flanges is quite normal....

Re: m88 valve shims
all the information you need is in my post above. IMHO 'buying lots of shims' (without measuring beforehand) isn't likely to be practical; for example it is not at all likely but you might theoretically need 24 shims of one size, and there are ~26 possible shim thicknesses. Realistically you would b...

Re: Knocking noise from rear suspension
the roll bar parts are not too difficult to replace. However it is normally pretty obvious if they are faulty, too; you should be able to see if the rubbers are perished and/or the metal parts have been touching one another. also check that the lower bolts onto the shocks are properly tight; if they...

Re: Transmission bracket
in many parts of the footwell there is about 1" of foam beneath the carpet. This means that you need to remove the carpet to get at the inside of the floor.
Yes you need to dismantle the centre console and/or remove the front seat(s) to access the right part of the floor.

Re: m88 valve shims
sorry I'm on the wrong side of the planet for that! Honestly, I'd just measure up, and just buy the (hopefully few) shims I needed. In the UK they can be had via ebay for less than a fiver each, posted. This means you would not expect to have to spend more than £30 or so. I'd imagine that you will b...

Re: m88 valve shims
you need to do steps a-c first, making careful notes, preferably in the form of a chart. a) measure the valve clearances you have, and work out the correction required for each valve. b) measure the shim thickness presently installed with each valve c) calculate the new shim thickness required for e...

FWIW the fuel pump only runs (if you have motronic) when the engine is either cranking or running. It does not run when the ignition is on and the engine is not turning.

my two pence worth; there is so much dodgy stuff out there that the last time I needed replacement suspension arms I refurbed some old OEM ones, it being a better choice (for me) than paying either dealer prices for OEM parts or buying fake crap from ebay.

Re: Transmission bracket
FWIW I don't think the floor of the car is badly bent, mainly it is the 'rail' that the gearbox mounts onto that appears to be deformed. I'd suggest driving something rectangular along the slot lengthwise (there is an opening at one end). You might well find that some hammering is needed from inside...

Re: Water Hoses set for M30b35 - 1989 High Line UK
Thanks Brucey, do you happen to know if the e34 ones will fit? My understanding is that the engine is essentially the same with some mods. the engine is basically the same but the radiator is different and so is the heater valve etc. You might be lucky but I doubt that very many of the hoses are si...

Re: My M635 is eating main relays
Idling slowly suggests 'not enough air getting into the engine' and/or a catastrophically weak mixture and if it won't take any throttle that also suggests a weak mixture. It may be no single fault but several in combination. For example if the ICV isn't working properly this might lead to a small a...

I've always assumed the rod goes on the left and the protruding part of the knuckle bushing is set to the right, i.e. the correct orientation is an exact mirror image of the last photo. But maybe I've been doing it wrong for years, and/or it doesn't really matter?

update; I have squirted lube, tugged as hard as hard as I dare on the handles, and I can't get in to either door. I think if I pull any harder the handles will break. This being a project car the battery isn't connected; one idea is to connect a battery and hope that the central locking helps out so...
