Re: Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

Thanks Brucey, That's pretty much what I was thinking too. The MC internal seals must be letting fluid past for the pedal to sink under pressure. However, I spoke to my local BMW dealer (whom have been supplying all my parts, including the MC) and the technicians there seem to think the culprit may ...

Losing Brake Pedal When Engine Running

OK, I spoke too soon on the previous thread. Got up early today to fit the wheels and in-tank pump, ready for the car's first MOT for many years. All was going well until I started the car up for the run to the MOT: I noticed that whilst I have a good solid brake pedal with the engine off, as soon a...

Re: Brake Fluid Recommendations and Bleeding ABS

I have a pedal! Don't know what you guys were worried about.... :) I used a pressurised EasyBleed system at 20Lb/Sq" and bled the system as a 'normal' car. IE started at the furthest wheel, left rear then right rear, left front and so on. Initially I thought I was in trouble as the left rear wa...

Re: How to identify M635CSI diff casing please.

Hi Rob,

I got a few quotes and they range between 350 and 500 quid. The guy I chose, mainly because he is only 30 minutes away, quoted me £395 including new bearings and seals. I will let you know how I get on.

Cheers,
Ian

Re: Brake Fluid Recommendations and Bleeding ABS

Interesting information in the BMW E24 Manual I found a link to. It says you connect the charging system (I.E. Easy Bleed) to the MC, push and hold down the brake pedal, open the bleed valve on the furthest caliper away (presumably with bleed pipe attached and submersed), pump the brake 12 times the...

Re: Brake Fluid Recommendations and Bleeding ABS

Thanks Brucey! Great info. I particularly like the idea of running the car on stands (my car is currently on 4x 6 ton lorry stands) and fooling the ABS unit into thinking the wheels have locked. Will the fact that the fronts are not turning but the rears are be enough to trigger the ABS pumps or doe...

Re: How to identify M635CSI diff casing please.

They are indeed. The guy doing the swap for me used to have a brand new E23/E24 LSD in his workshop but ended up using it as a donor for parts. Imagine what that diff would be worth today! I was talking to a guy in Germany who had a low mileage M5 LSD but he wanted €LOTS for it. The 745 / 750 (and p...

Brake Fluid Recommendations and Bleeding ABS

Hi All, I am halfway through the M635 brake refurb. New BMW MC and all new steel lines, custom Goodridge SS hoses, rebuilt and coated calipers, EBC discs and Redstuff pads etc. The only things I will retain are the ABS unit and fluid reservoir (currently in the dishwasher with the washer bottles- do...

Re: How to identify M635CSI diff casing please.

After all my concerns, it all turned out reasonably quick and easy work today. After a liberal coating of penetrating oil on the various bolts attaching my diff, I started by removing the 'new' diff from the fully-loaded rear subframe I bought. The main challenge was how to lock the diff so I could ...

Re: How to identify M635CSI diff casing please.

Thanks for all your help chaps, After lots of careful measuring, my M635CSI and standard 635CSI are indeed the same large case. So I am now the proud owner of a 635CSI rear subframe, complete with diff, brakes, prop etc, all in great condition. I have also found a diff specialist nearby who will swa...

Re: How to identify M635CSI diff casing please.

OK. So I have been measuring the diff on my M635CSI and comparing it to your information. It is a big case diff and I have checked it is LSD (wheels rotate in the same direction), just in case someone swapped it out in the past. I am off to look at the case tomorrow evening and will check various me...

Re: How to identify M635CSI diff casing please.

Thanks Brucey, I media blasted the case (and rear subframe) before the rust stabiliser coat :) The case, whilst still intact has lost most of the external webs to rust and the walls are very thin in places, the surface of the case itself is very pitted. Even with a coat of primer and stonechip it wi...

Re: How to identify M635CSI diff casing please.

Hi Brucey, I am going to rebuild the diff with new LSD clutch, bearings, seals etc . My case is rather rough so I have stripped it, stabilised the rust with 2 coats of RC800 and I was planning to follow this with coats of Dinitrol primer and stone chip. However, whilst this should ensure the casing ...

How to identify M635CSI diff casing please.

Hi all, I have been offered a diff casing which I am.told comes from a late 635CSI. According to RealOEM this should be the same case as mine and as the pictures show it is in excellent condition, I am.considering doing a case swap. However, it is a fair distance from me and I have no evidence that ...

Re: M635 Gear Shift Restoration

I have the car up on the ramps / stands to replace the complete braking system. Whilst I was under there applying penetrating oil to all the unions, I had a wiggle of the shift mechanism. The only significant play I could find was in the union between the lower gear stick and the selector rod (14). ...

Re: Best Master Cylinder - M635CSI

Thanks Gaz,
Is it a straight swap, like for like? I.E. the same mountings and pipe fittings, no need to mod anything?
I don't suppose you have a part number to hand do you? Rummaging about the internet suggests different BMW part numbers for the 750IL but 34311156643 seems to be the right one.

Best Master Cylinder - M635CSI

Hi All, So, today I plan to raise the car up high and remove the braking system completely. I am restoring/refinishing the calipers myself with original BMW parts and will be fitting them with EBC RedStuff pads wrapped around new EBC G3000 discs. Assuming I can get them off the car in time, I will s...

M635 Gear Shift Restoration

Hi All, My 1985 M635 has a vague gear shift, it selects gears perfectly well but has just got a little sloppy with age (haven't we all...). I have been looking at the picture below, trying to identify likely culprits. So, I have a couple of questions for you guys: Do I simply need to replace the bea...
