Re: Clutch time + ??

The biggest difference will come from all new shifter bushings and one of these to replace the pressed metal factory unit. There a few manufacturers I think. A number of purveyors make the "bushing kits" to replace all the contact points for the shifter, selector rod carriage and pivots et...

Re: manual gearbox swap help

Hard to say on the dual mass vs single. The early cars are not over powered by any means which would usually point to a single mass. My 86 which I just changed out the original clutch has a single mass unit. and seemed fine for my purposes.

Re: Fog Lights - has anyone upgraded those?

I was wondering if they might be H1 instead of H4. I'd still look at LED. You should be able to try 2 or 3 different color temps for the same price as what your advert shows. https://www.ebay.com/itm/4x-H1-LED-Headlight-Hi-Low-Beam-100W-Fog-Lights-SMD-CREE-White-Bulbs-Vehicle/153631444456?hash=item2...

Re: 1984 633CSi Rises again!

Well I'm thinking my PS pump is more in need of a rebuild than your was! https://i.imgur.com/T4NmzCwm.jpg That said removal and rebuild is very straight forward. This is a popular pump used in many German cars of the period. I've used RENNBAY rebuild kits for about $20 in the past. I'll replace as m...

Re: Rough Idle and Power Steering Pump - connected?

Song, I just finished working on my car and noticed the hose from the intake to the ICV was split near the ICV and was causing my newly erratic idle. Can you tell us what repairs you made to your PS system? My 1986 is leaky so I plan to rebuild the pump and possibly replace all the low pressure hose...

Re: Fog Lights - has anyone upgraded those?

I'm a big fan of yellow if you're really driving in fog. 100 watts is a lot to be pumping into those small housings! I assume you've relayed them. That said I've swapped some of the fleet over to Cree yellow LEDs. A lot more lumens per watt than incandescent with much lower power usage and heat gene...

Re: Clutch and starter R&R

Even with an articulated socket I could not get the upper starter bolt out with similar to the poster in the PDF above due to the shoulder built into the original starter's casting. On reinstall of a smaller later model starter, however I was able to use about 20 inches worth of 3/8s extensions to f...

I'll take left over parts for $500 Alex

I just finished a clutch job on my 86 with 105K miles with new ancillaries like starter, some intake hoses etc and for the reverse drive out into the driveway all seems good. I had the following bits left over. https://i.imgur.com/0dCa5Nam.jpg I had started down the path of removing the intake manif...

Re: Big Clunk when trying to start

I think we'll need s big more clarity. First you say "it wouldn't crank over", then you "...after cranking over a bunch of times"?
If the battery were dead, the starter would not turn, i.e. crank. Keep us posted.

Will do. I expect the starter will take at least as long as putting the tranny back in!

Got the tranny back together. Couldn't hand slide it the last 1/2 inch but working the bolts around snugged it up nicely.

Along these lines Big question here. Reviewing real oem above as pilot bearing was not sealed and replacement is. Real OEM diagram above shows install order "capring", felt, covering plate, THEN bearing. My existing as pictured in my post, install order was bearing, covering plate, felt, c...

Re: Tranny stuck to engine

Thank you Ralph. Hidden valley bolt it was. Totally my fault as I had repeatedly blindly put a socket exactly on that bolt while trying to remove the one immediately towards the passenger side of that one and then forgotten all about it. I do not look forward to the reinstall. One thing all clutch t...

Tranny stuck to engine

In what is rapidly devolving into the clutch from hell, the tranny now won't release from the engine. Lower half will give slightly, but not the top. I'm assuming the locarlting pin near the starter is frozen in but everyone must have to deal with this? The starter is now out as the rocking of the t...

Re: Bosch Idle Control Valve discontinued, any valid alternatives?

An accepted cleaning method that has worked for me on these units in other cars is to flush it with carb cleaner and operate the unit with a 9 volt battery. Continue with the carb cleaner until it runs clear and then swap the unit in and try it out. My worst units would not click/open at all pre flu...

Re: Drive shaft removal difficulties

I was lucky that the PO had the exhaust manifold jet coated not that many miles ago and the nuts came right off even though the front pipe's rear most stud was very challenging to get a socket on! I hope the tranny comes right off but easy enough to put the slave back on if I need extra leverage. Th...

Hopefully this add to the BOK on starter removal. Having been flummoxed at removing some of the lower intake manni bolts I revisited using the Heyco 17mm box end on the starter bolts as I could not get the articulated sockets to work. For the top bolt, I seated the Heyco as seen. I bought a hardened...

Drive shaft removal difficulties

I'm doing the clutch on my 86 635csi.  Or rather I'd be doing the clutch if I could get to it!  I was offered a friends lift for the weekend and it looks like I'll be going a fair bit longer. I started down the starter removal rabbit hole from the mythical 30 min-1 hr swap, to the factory recommende...

Thanks, that is everything I could have hoped for but I may have to chalk it up to variable skills sets. I did go at the top bolt that way. Even with a wobble socket which is only about 2/3rds as deep at the socket shown, I could not get it to seat and grab. Same for the lower bolt BTW. I'll try aga...

Clutch and starter R&R

I have read a number of posts regarding a clutch renewal, none mentioned a starter removal, I'm guessing because someone smarter than me would have assumed that it had to come out! I have read all of the starter threads I could find including the seemingly mythical 1 hour or less swap! On my 86 csi,...

Re: E24 DIY Rear shock replacement (WITH PICTURES!)

True to my prediction, unlike removal, I was unable to get the furthest nut on the pass side back in place from the trunk. I pulled out the seat and used a very long screwdriver to poke a hole in the asphalt like sound deadening material. From there it was a treat to install the last nut on the stru...

Re: suspension options

The springs are not misaligned. The problem is if you use a heavy duty or standard Bilstein shock, or any other shock for that matter, with a lowering spring, the rear shocks will come off their perch when jacking up the rear of the car due to the fact that the stroke of the HD shock is longer. Tha...
