Hmm, that's got me thinking: I've got the flywheel from an '83 car in my '84, so whilst I've got the "right" harmonic balancer for a manual, I haven't got the right one for the lighter flywheel (same one as in M635/M5, can't remember weight difference). The balancer from the scrap '83 car ...

I had to fix leaks from both of mine, you won't get loads of fluid coming out, but get the rags ready anyway! Leaks fixed with wrap of ptfe tape. If you're messing around with the power steering/brake vacuum system anyway, you might want to change the filter in the bottom of the reservoir at the sam...

I should point out that I'm a bit of a namby-pamby with the suspension being too harsh. I'll pretend that it's because I take the kids out in the car a lot and then blame it on the road surfaces round here though!

Hi Kos, Not sure that adjustable perches would be that much use: the lowest setting would leave the springs too short for the shocks, so risk of unseating them every time car is raised on jacks. Not that big a deal on the road I suppose, would have to be a hell of a pothole! I looked into the lower ...

Back on the road!

As per Ron's offer, don't know how close you are to Cheltenham, but welcome to borrow mine if that's any easier.

Got mine from ebay, along with a 3/4" to 1/2" drive adapter.

Thanks Ron, You come to the rescue yet again! I'm falling foul of the over-ambitious approach in fitting a new guibo and short shift kit, plus re-aligning the exhaust thinking it was best to do everything whilst the car is in the air on jackstands (I'm having car lift envy!). This means I'm really k...

Or...they are on back order. No delivery date confirmed. Great. Nothing from ECP or GSF. Way back in the day I bought the rubber inserts separately, but experiments with removing the old ones left me quite happy with the (then good) spares I had. Old ones were absolutely stuck in, and drastic though...

Hi Kos, skinny spring pads on front (3mm?) posted part number on Madridcab's "too low in front" thread; standard size drop hats when picture taken.

Should also say my car is an '84 manual without aircon. Check out my brown-tint glass!

Rear suspension topmounts

Having taken the H&Rs off, have noticed that the rear shock topmounts are cracked and split around the rubbers. Annoyingly enough, they don't appear on realoem, only the shock assembly appears with none of the "extra" bits. I am VERY keen to get car back on the road now. Does anyone kn...

Hi Jon, THey are supposed to be 30mm drop, but are more than that - have a look at the "too low in front" post, can't remember off the top of my head. It's a personal preference thing, just too harsh for me. Haven't actually caned it anywhere to see if the handling's better. I've now put t...

That looks beautiful!

Presumably you took the screens out again to have the headlining done? I guess that meant new rubbers too.

This is sort-of next on my list of things to do!

Wow, as much as an inch. THat makes an enormous amount of sense: I changed my top mounts when I put the Fritz springs on, so that explains why I didn't see as much of a drop as I was expecting. The old ones turned smoothly enough, but the grease was old and crappy, so changed as a precaution. Thanks...

Thanks Brucey, didn't know there were M-tec springs! Limited knowledge of highline sixers , assumed they were the same as M635 springs. I bought the suspension from a scrap M635 with good front shocks but only one genuine M rear strut with the wider spring which came with a non-matching partner spri...

Back on topic! Apologies for hijacking your thread: just happened to be doing the same thing at the same time. Just measured the same distance on mine: front and rear sitting at 34. Still getting used to suspension, but doesn't feel too "crashy" in ride. I am disappointed that there are no...

Hi Kos, Not sure exactly how much full tank dropped the rear, prob about 5mm, yes. Rear billies have three perch settings, moved by shifting circlip into one of three grooves, always assumed middle one was standard (where mine is now). Am being a real namby about finding some weights to borrow in or...

Is any old multipurpose grease okay? I've been told graphite-based stuff is ideal for this sort of application.

30mm drop at front, prob. 20mm at rear. Could have lowered rear another 10mm, but with the M535i-spec rear shocks that would have left the springs loose in the mounts (which is fine, I know, apart from the pita risk of them coming unseated when the car is jacked up, which happens quite a lot on acco...

I must be being a bit thick here, but I cannot locate the part number for the selector shaft seal, as per picture in first post above. I don't suppose anyone has it to hand? It appears to be the same for the 265 and 260, but I must be suffering from realoem blindness. Even more annoyingly, I've alre...

Thanks Kos! I got them from this guy with an amazing sixer up near Heathrow: no joke, his car is kept on its own carpet! I've got the 3mm pads top and bottom: 31 33 1 128 523 31 33 1 124 322 I would swear that new top mounts (31 33 1 139 452) and the fitment of Bilsteins (from M635) made the car sit...
