Update: Got the probe back in today, with very little effort. The opening is on the left upper side of the heater box, facing straight toward the rear of the car - thus, the probe faces straight forward. It's not a super-snug fit, so I used a little caulking to hold it in place for good.

A V8 in an E24 would be interesting, but a lot more work than I'm planning. I'm hoping for an S54, as it's almost a drop-in and I'd be doing it myself.

Mine just arrived, and it looks perfect for the backlight on the OBC buttons. The end of the bulb has to fit through a hole in a metal plate, and nothing else I tried would work.
