I had the same thing happen, only my exhaust manifold on my pre-highline car was different. It was clearly the third time (at least) that the manifold had blown at this point in the life of the car. Rather than put the same junk back again I fitted the tubular branch manifold. Having done this, I th...

ages ago I checked out a really good site for 7 series run by some Dutch (I think) guys- they gave a very good run-down on AC upgrades on our generation of BMWs and included a list of Bosch/BMW compressor part numbers that are and are not compatible with the more modern refrigerant. It think it may ...

its filled with R12 and only works very feebly.... methinks it has a small leak and needs a new refrigerant in it, new filter/dryer, maybe new seals etc. The compressor is one of those with a part number that is not compatible with R134a, so it'll have to be replaced, or one of those 'mixed' concoct...

In MS photoeditor, get the picture you want up there. Then click on FILE then SAVE AS. You will get a dialogue box up allowing you to specify the file path and name of the the picture file when you save it. In the bottom left of this box there is a button marked MORE. When you press MORE you get a l...

I've done it on other cars that lacked this feature, and plan to do it on the 6er at some point; thing is, it is way down on the list..... Incidentally, Ivan- your 'variable speed' problem is almost certainly a bad earth from the wipers, shared with a load of other things. You could probably sort it...

Jeremy Walton's book quotes for the 635 race car either a 'standard' 14.5:1 or a quicker 13.6:1 ratio. It does not say if this is just the box or the overall ratio.

welcome aboard!

incidentally you can 'shrink' the file size of a picture in MS photoeditor (and other programs) by choosing a higher JPEG compression factor (in 'more'). this way you can squish them up nicely, and resolution does not suffer too much.

if the AC has not been converted to a newer type of gas than R12 already then the condenser would have to be replaced as part of this. Except with a very bad leak some oil would remain in the system and this would stop the system from failing completely unless the AC was left in the ON position for ...

I'll be interested to see how you get on Dave. Incidentally the rear box is fractionally lower than the original system, and so is the middle part of the pipe. If could have been bothered to adjust the centre hangers then it would have sat about 0.5 to 1" higher. As it is, the pipe has been on ...

If you are sure there is no spark (check with a spare plug if in doubt), then the first thing to check would be the fuel pump. When you turn the ignition to II you should hear the fuel pump run for about three seconds. If the relay or pump is bad, you will have no fuel pressure and the car won't sta...

Everybody has their favourites. However grade and general type is more important as brand in my view. There are two main schools of thought; 1) Use an API SGFor better rated oil (viscosity as per BMW recommendations depending on the temperature in your territory). Change it as least as often as your...

On many early to mid 90s BMWs you need to look out for the Nikasil problem- although most cars so afflicted have been fixed now, there are still some about.

yes, copper is fine and a reel is quite cheap. Just make sure that the end fittings are well secured- any flexing of the copper pipe where the flexible hoses join to it will be fatal. I bought a flaring tool a while back and it was about 20 quid. You can make bends by hand but neat ones are best mad...

Dave,
get yourself a welding set (a little CO2/MIG set will be fine) an angle grinder, and learn to use them. Its not difficult, and it'll change your life- amazing at less than 150 quid new.....

Free yourself from other people's bodged-up/overpriced repair work.....

I don't think you'll ever keep up with the polishing unless you only ever drive in dry weather. In the UK there is some salt on the roads for 6 months of the year and this will eat into a polished finish like crazy. So I'd go for lacquer, even though it will need re-doing from time to time. Lacquers...

I would say that you have a mixture strength problem. Basically the fuelling is too rich until you bleed in unmetered air via another hole, which compensates. I would suggest 1) checking that the AFM bypass is flowing any air and isn't blocked or shut right down. It takes about ten turns to open ful...
