H&R and Bilstein Sports rears - Driving Impressions

So I have put over 200 miles on my car since I completed the upgrade of my suspension from stock shocks and springs to H&R springs and Bilstein Sports. This is part 2 of my impressions after the complete conversion. Recall that one weekend I just did the fronts and I posted a quick review. So no...

Re: 84 633csi 5 spd

Chin up! Before you know it it'll handle the way a premium German car should handle. After all my suspension work, the car feels sooooo much better. I need to find some time to detail observations since the rear suspension last weekend. In any case, once you get all the slop and weird noises taken c...

Re: 1984 633CSi Rises again!

Good work Song. I found the rear seats and parcel shelf being removed made loosening of the 3 nuts holding the rear shocks much quicker. I doubt you will need to get in there again, but it was time well spent as you can gain access to all three nuts from above and loosen with ease. Derrick, I was a...

Stance with new suspension

Here's a picture below of the before and after. As it turns out, it's about the same stance as the sagging stock springs, but I wanted the same stance. I actually adjusted the new Bilstiens to match the height of the old. I liked the height of the rear. Turns out I was within 1/4" when done. I ...

Rear H&R with Bilsteins In!

Ok, this morning was fun. Josh, the guy I bought the car from, came to my house in the morning and helped me to put the rears into the car. It was nice having help to fasten the tops of the shocks in the trunk while I held everything in place. The entire operation with 2 people took around 3 hours f...

Curious how that explains the issue when warmed up?
Also, please enlighten us USA people on what the word "dizzy" means when associated to a battery.

Re: 84 633csi 5 spd

Battery died due to a parasitic draw. I've narrowed it down to slot 21 in the fuse box which incidentally requires only a 7.5 fuse but for whatever reason has a 25a fuse. That is listed as the Interior lights, radio, glove box, rechargeable flashlight, obc, radio memory, instruments. I didn't think...

Re: 84 633csi 5 spd

$35 and the locksmith got me in. It's a win in my book I think. Going to take the battery with me home this weekend and put it on trickle until the diff mount gets in on Wednesday. Derrick, I was wondering if you couldn't have just used your key manually? Is your driver and passenger door locks mes...

Re: Rear end has no bounce at all!

Just another follow up. By the 2nd weekend in Feb 2016, I'll have all new H&R springs and Bilstein Sports. I think my suspension issues will be resolved pretty well. Also, I had a bad center link that made a HUGE difference when replaced. Finally, my dog bones don't appear to be shot. I'll repla...

Bilstien rears are in - and different?

Ah, I came back from a long day to find my Bilstien rears had arrived. I opened them up just to inspect them and touch them. You know how it is. I noticed something surprising. Most pictures that I have seen of Bilstein sports have 4 adjustment positions with the default set at the highest position....

Re: 1984 633CSi Rises again!

Nice work Song. Looks great up front now. A couple of tips for the rears. First install the snap rings at a middle groove. I always start in the middle so that I can go up or down after the install. You may even like the initial height so that you will not have to do any adjustment. Starting at the...

Initial Impressions - Front's only

OK, I have commuted in the car for 2 days now. My commute consists of a twisty drive over a mountain road. If you look up the road between Santa Cruz and San Jose, California you'll see that it's quite a drive! It called Highway 17 and it goes over the Santa Cruz Mountains. Even though I have only d...

Re: 1984 633CSi Rises again!

For example, I realized that removing the 3 bolts from the bottom of the strut tube is best done with the steering wheel at a few different angles. If the wheels are pointed straight ahead, you cannot get a clear shot at all the bolts since the other suspension assembles will force your socket wren...

What a huge difference a H&R lowering spring makes.

OK, I completed the front spring installation today. I just had to post a picture of the before and after. It's like night and day wouldn't you say? Ever since I got my car, I felt it was nose high. After driving it for 5 months and waiting for it to "settle", I realized that there was som...

Re: 1984 633CSi Rises again!

The H&R spring number looks to be different from the new set I just installed. Mine were 50428 and yours appear to be 50143. I wonder what the difference is? You know, I didn't shop for my springs. I bought then from Ralph in SoCal (super nice guy), so I didn't look at any numbers. I figured he...

Re: 1984 633CSi Rises again!

Song, A chain wrench should work, too. If you need leverage, a cheater pipe can be put over the handle. I thought about a chain wrench, but decide against it. I had purchased a chain wrench adaptor to do the brake bomb a while back, but it didn't work for the bomb. I'm not sure it was clear from th...

H&R and Bilstein Sports

I was going to wait until all the parts came in for my suspension, but it was a nice day today and it wasn't raining. By about noon, I had to tear into the car. Of course the first one takes the longest. I had to make runs to the tool store to get something big enough to get around the shock cartrid...

Re: It's suspension time!

Now on the way home, I learned not to ignore the reserve fuel light. Although it came on, my OBC said I had a 35 mile range left. I only had 15 miles to home. I thought I could make it. I thought wrong . When it died, my fuel gauge was still registering 1/4 tank and the range was 30 miles. Next thi...

It's suspension time!

Had a pretty good day today. I met up with Ralph from SoCal (but in NorCal for a roadtrip) and purchase a set of HR springs and front Bilstien sports. I've got the rears on order from BavAuto and am hoping they make it from the east coast to California in record time. Along with this setup, Ralph wa...

Re: 84 633csi 5 spd

Hey, I was stranded today on a mountain highway only 8.3 miles from home. Unfortunately it was dark and I was blocking traffic. What happened? I had run out of gas, even though my gauge registered 1/4 tank and my On Board Computer said I still have 30 miles of range. I learned that having a roadside...

OK, I know that I need to run hub-centric rings (74.1mm x 72.56mm) to run E39 wheels on my 633. I wanted to fill out the wheel wells and spacers seem to be the way to go. I saw these on Amazon and they appear to be a smoking deal. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00V7L7ZAO/ref=dra_a_rv_bb_hn_xx_P1250_1000?...

Thought I would complete my posting on this thread. Ultimately I purchased a used OBC main unit from an eBay seller and swapped with my unit. It's been 3 weeks and it's working just fine. My original main unit had gone bad. That is my conclusion. The head unit I the dash was fine. When all this star...
