Thoughts on a potential change...

Post by bcadmin » Fri Jun 19, 2020 3:11 pm

Hey guys!

I'm back from a much needed small vacation and ready to address things again.

I have a idea I want to run by fellow members...

Reading the thread and sitting on things for a while, I do have some inspiration to keeping the site going. After doing some research, I did find some things I can work on to improve the site that align with skills I need for my day to day job. With this, my idea is to treat Bigcoupe less like a non profit organization but more of one that puts money into my beer budget. That said, I love that the site isn't caked with ads and needless BS. I am proposing a new member signup fee of $25.00. This would be a one time, lifetime membership fee. This fee would apply to new members only and I would continue to take donations if members felt inclined to give. I would however, discontinue the yearly drive for donations.

I think its a great idea but I need some input. Many times, what I think is a great idea, is simply the opposite ;-). Money is a great motivator and after reading the many comments, I am committed to keeping the site up one way or another with the archive being the least of desirable.

Thoughts?

Brian

Brian,

I have viewed this sight before I purchased my six and have continued to do so on a regular basis ever since. It is a marvelous resource and I am more than willing to match the $25.00 new member fee to keep it going.

$25 up front and an annual $15 renewal. Look at what parts cost! And they don't come with any intelligence or comraderie.

May I make a suggestion?

By all means go for a $25 sign up/one off fee for new individuals but also suggest a voluntary $25 one off for existing members? Al though I've been around here a fair old while I would definitely pay it up as one off fee if it meant there was money in the coffers to help assure the site is fiscally supported for a few more years.

I haven't got a clue how much it costs to support a website so I could afford to send in a few dollars recently but knowing the support would help it carry on would be good news for everyone.

I very much agree with this. And leave the donation link so that anyone can add to the coffers at anytime.

I like providing small non-critical parts in exchange for site donations

I routinely pay for another car forum and have done so more than 10 years - not a problem.

I think an annual fee would be reasonable. Perhaps consideration might be given to having a free membership category, but with more limited access to certain areas or functions?

I see no problem with annual dues but also for new & current members.

Happy to go with the masses.

Not sure how much revenue charging only any new
Members a more substantial signup fee might bring in.. suspect it might stop new members from signing up especially if the current wisdom is still available via google with no paywall. Might just prevent new blood?

It’s difficult to know the best approach to keep this going, encourage new members, make sure the site pays for itself and covers time spent keeping it going.

My vote would be annual membership for all registered members.. not sure how many post and are active but if these numbers are known then setting a moderate annual membership that generates the required revenue but also is not enough to prevent people paying would be the key.

Happy with whatever you decide though Brian.. end of the day you are the one putting in the hours and hosting this!

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Interesting ideas and approaches to consider. I have added the fee to new registrants, lets see if anybody even bothers now. History tells me I should at the very least take on one new member a week. But at a fee, that may change dramatically! Never thought of that ;-)

Worst case, I add a fee for current members but I'm on the fence on that. Reason being, there are so many that have offered a tremendous amount of support over the years.

Yes Brain,

We did offer support and I consider it a form of dues paid in.
You have a terrific site that this community finds invaluable.
If you can retain 80% of the registrants and figure a dollar amount
to cover costs and a respectable profit--post your findings and see
what the feedback is. Although car clubs have activities with
BMWCCA,AACA,SCCA etc. Without your site to keep these old cars going
we couldn't be active in those clubs. Average yearly dues range from
$49 to $90. I would think any dues in the $25 to $40 range would work.
Just my take on it.

Whatever you decide you've got my vote.

A counter point for arguments sake.

this would significantly reduce the new signups which could slow how many new posts happen.

Even as a old hand, I know for certain that despite my many musings and postings I have perhaps taken more in information than I have given in any wisdom so I feel I 'owe' the forum and its members somewhat.

It's a very valid point about $25 fees potentially discouraging the new members sign-up - perhaps a $5 sign up would not discourage new members and a '$10/15/25 or more' annual subscription for existing members; the $5 sign-up would certainly discourage spammers.

As they used to say, 'suck it and see' to find out what works - the most important thing is that the forum continues and the fabulous thing is that we get a very open and positive discussion about it.

I went for a $63.51 donation recently which seemed to cheer mine and Brian's geeky brains up a little

Completely on board with fee. I think $25 will put lots of new members off: a lower annual fee for all members would be my preference - say $10?

forum.bmw5 charges a "gold members" fee of £10 [and I don't think anyone even makes Austin Powers jokes] if people want to advertise, but they cater for all models of 5er, with very few E28 parts appearing now. I think the E24 is closer to the E9 these days - I wonder how they manage their sites?

Like so many of the posts above, I know I get much more out of the site than I could ever put in.

Thank you,

Rob

I'm all in for a program that'll keep things running.
If it wasn't for this site, I wouldn't have an e24. Seriously.
I've chronicled the entire history of my car on this site. Let me know what needs to be done to keep it going and how I can help.

I agree that charging first time members $25 might turn many away. You might consider perks like a stickers or other tangible items to entice the first time payments. I saw these work for other affinity sites.

There are number of payment mechanisms out there for devoted supporters. Have you considered setting up a Patreon account? I already support a number of independent creators monthly this way. Might give you a regular stream of monthly income from the regular crowd. Even a few dollars a month from all of us would add up quickly and could meet your funding goals. Hoping there are enough of us willing to pay monthly in small installments to make that model work instead or in addition to the memberships.

I am assuming that the site will be visible in read-only for unpaid visitors. It's only if folks want to actively participate with the community that they pay the one-time subscription fee, correct?

I agree you should keep the donate button alive. I am confident all of us blow money on coffee's, soda pop, beer, and maybe even pastimes best not shared in polite company, that don't give us near the benefit of coming in here when our beautiful E24's need some help. I have ZERO problem kicking down funding to keep this site thriving, and I hope anyone who is following this conversation appreciates how much time you put into keeping this place going. I recommend that ANY of us regularly using this site kick down at least once a year to Brian.

Maybe you could create a special badge for paying members of the forums, so we have a constant visual reminder for visitors that contributing is very important to keeping the site going.

a fee works for me but I'm thinking that preventing the unpaid from posting will cut activity...I'm also not opposed to related advertising on the board

I would think a $25 one time fee for all members new or old. No reason our present members shouldn't throw a few $$ into the kitty Paypal would be great

My first question would be...................has the site been maintained cost wise by donations over the years ? If no then you might want to look at an entry fee. If yes, why change ?
