An appeal for OEM Bilstein information

Post by Brucey »

chaps,
I'm trying to collate as much information as possible regarding OEM Bilstein shocks on BMW E28 and E24 models.

The situation regarding aftermarket shocks is fairly well-understood, (although there are still curve-balls coming.... e.g. wattsmonkey'si recent B46-0747 (edit- could be B46-0727, awaiting disambiguation..edit II it is B46-0727 ) fitment)

What seems to be missing is a reference for the OEM Bilsteins that were fitted originally. Whilst Bilstein will supply aftermarket shocks they don't always tally with OEM ones exactly (and as a consequence I've seen odd length shocks and inserts on the same car....), and the OEM ones have numbers on them which are not easy to cross-reference; it is the latter which I'm interested in...

What I'm after is any OEM examples of;

Bilstein part number (stamped on OEM shock).
BMW part number (stamped on OEM shock).
Nominal shock stroke (length of chromey bit from shock/insert body to shoulder on chromey bit.
What year and model they were fitted to.
---------------------------------------------
examples;

Example 1.

Rear BMW/BIL 3352 1129 264.9 / 645 0737 W01
Front BMW/BIL 3132 1127 526.2 / 728 0239 W01

Example 2.

Rear BMW/BIL 3352 1127 528.9 / 730 0610 W01
Front BMW/BIL 3132 1127 526.2 / 826 0239 W01

Both sets have ~5.7" nominal stroke at the front, and ~7.75" nominal stroke a the rear (actual stroke is less than this in both cases)

Both sets come from E28 M535i, exact year unknown.

NB -none of the above BMW numbers appear in any ETK that I've seen, with or without the '.9' bit that is obviously spurious
--------------------------------------------------------

all contributions welcome!

cheers

Interesting...
I recently sold the stock springs off my US 1985 535i. The shocks were corroded in place and led me to believe they were the originals:

From the Buyer:
Cleaning them up before installing them, I've found that they are, according to their part numbers, springs for an early 524td, not 535i. The difference is the front springs, and the 524td seem to be made of slightly larger diameter material to better match the heavier diesel front end weights.

The part numbers stamped on them, in case you want to verify them are:
fronts: 1 127 662
rears: 1 127 836
That same front spring shows up as being used on some early 6-series cars, too, but not in combination with those rears. The only car that supposedly uses, in stock form, the fronts and rears I received, is a 524td.

I'm having my original Bilstein shocks rebuilt by Bilstein USA. The numbers on the shocks for my 1985 M635 (1051998) are:

Front shocks: 31.32-2225017.2 and 5090242W00

Rear shock numbers: 33.52-2225020 and 5020725W00

Ed, that is exactly the kind of information I was after; I believe that (if I have cracked the code) this means your inserts are P36-0242 and shocks B46-0725. BTW these are 'old' Bilstein part numbers; they now have new ones which are; 34-002421 and 24-007252.

If you are feeling cheeky, could you ask Bilstein USA for the bump stop part number that goes inside the insert, and also what the valving specifications are in both shock and insert?

cheers

I have acquired a set of billy's with a few of them having stamped part numbers. I'm going to pull the part number off them today, then post it. I'm not sure what they came from originally. I acquired them recently from someone that had them on a US 635csi.

Ok so I have quite the mismatched setup here. Here is what I have and the front two are different:

Front inserts:
31 32 1127526.2 (stamped number)
P36 0233 H0

Rear shocks:
650 0610 H004 (stamped)
B46 0610 H004

I'm not 100% sure on any of this but I have an idea. The 1127526 is from an e28 M5. The P36 is an e24 HD insert. The two rears are both e24/e28 "comfort" shocks. The stamped rear shock appears to be OEM perhaps?

Pretty old thread, but both of the Bilsteins I removed from the rear of an 1985 535i were
stamped with 47 0610 M03. They're yellow so I'm not sure if they're even OEM, but they're old and need recharged. Only one groove to clip in the lower spring support unlike most of the sport shocks.

Probably HD's - stoke is about 7.75" - and FWIW from the shock body to the machined down portion for the washer at the top is right at 8".
