Is there a list somewhere by type, or did you infer this by production number ranges?
Sixes are rare in general...and rust casualties have been very high. Particularly the early e-12 based cars, seems to me.
I haven't seen another six around here for a year or so, come to think of it. Old imports just slowly dissolve in our humid cool climate. Salt doesn't help much either.

Here is a page of links looking at the production data in different ways:DesktopDave wrote:Is there a list somewhere by type, or did you infer this by production number ranges?

That's some fun info. So mein 6-er was 452 of 950 in the "633 CSi USA LHD" run. Though it's marked a 633CSiA on the pillar, likely they all carried that sticker.
Seems to me that 3/82 is a bit early for the e28 chassis changeover, but I'm assuming that these numbers seem to follow the major changes, like specific motors, Bosch DME's and/or chassis types.
This board is great (in case you fellas didn't know). I've only been here like 20 posts and I already feel like I know a bit about the cars. I'd never have considered tackling a project like this without this site's care & feeding directions. What would fixing old cars be like without the web to share?

interesting point that.... the following US 633 series, (type code 5274) shows 6725001- 6728592 starting in 3/82. I ran the first few chassis numbers in the ETK and it showed;DesktopDave wrote: Seems to me that 3/82 is a bit early for the e28 chassis changeover, but I'm assuming that these numbers seem to follow the major changes, like specific motors, Bosch DME's and/or chassis types.
5001 3/82 E12 underpinnings
5002 to 5004 6/82 E12 underpinnings
5005- 9/82-on E28 underpinnings
now this could be reflecting an error in the ETK database, but on the other hand it might not....
also 635 type code 5381 (8180000 on, starting 2/82) shows;
0001-0008 2/82-4/82 E12 underpinnings?
0009- 0137 5/82* E12 or E28 underpinnings?
(* note; some show as 4/82 in this range, i.e. may not have been manufactured in strict chassis number order)
again, is this real, or an anomaly in the data?
I have heard of 6ers that had 'odd' specifications that were manufactured around changeover points but I've never seen one with my own eyes....
-glad you like it here BTW...
cheers

Very confusing, just what do the type codes reflect??
Brucey, are you using RealOEM/BMW fans or do you have a different ETK?
This is what I have in my notes. The Motronic matches with what people have posted, but I believe the e12/e24 chassis changeover I got from RealOEM.

- 05/81 - Motronic introduced to 635 Engine in e12 chassis (In Euro Spec.cars - Not US Spec.)
09/81 - Motronic introduced to 633 Engine in e12 chassis (In US Spec.cars - Not Euro's)
06/82 - Last e12 chassis (No listing for 7/82 or 8/82 - is 9/82 first e28 chassis??)
1887268,
Paul the 1887xxx series were the RHD CAT ECE Auto models with 1887270 being the last one made. I don't think any rhd ones were made after 12/88.
My car was the 3rd last cat equipped rhd and was completed on 19th December 1988.

Mine and Ellis's car are only a month or two apart but he has different fonts and labels on his interior switchgear and it seems that BMW just used parts until they ran out and then switched to whatever was next on the shelf.DesktopDave wrote: Or leftover parts in the pipeline were bolted together in longer batches?
I've been using bmwfans mostly, and entering VIN numbers to see which parts come up. Where I've checked it, the data agrees with other ETKs I have been able to access, but I've not used realoem for this. In BMWfans you can skip the 'date' and 'transmission' selections and it shows parts with a date range. This agrees with the data for individual VINs.Chris Wright wrote:Very confusing, just what do the type codes reflect??

Motronic change was sept/oct '80 for several 6er models
First E28 chassis /last E12 appears to be 5/82 (although there may be E12 stragglers...?)
I was surprised to see that some chassis numbers in type code sequence overlapped the chassis change dates...but most do not.
I have also found that a few type codes have production numbers that may be 'wrong' in that the BMWfans database does not confirm the existence of some car VINs, e.g. TC 5332, #s 5550826 to 5550832 are not recognised.
cheers

I was just thinking the same thing, it took us four years or so to notice different decals around the HVAC sliders etc. Only minor, but they're there. I've just noticed now from the pics that the fader wheel is quite different though.Paul Humpage wrote:Mine and Ellis's car are only a month or two apart but he has different fonts and labels on his interior switchgear and it seems that BMW just used parts until they ran out and then switched to whatever was next on the shelf.DesktopDave wrote: Or leftover parts in the pipeline were bolted together in longer batches?
Paul's is a June '86 build and mine's October '86.
Are the styles and designs of the controls & labels etc the same in other BMWs of the era, or are these specific to the 6?
Paul & I have also noticed differences in the plumbing of our brake's hydraulic systems, with the piping layout, master cylinder etc on the left & right side of the block.
changes in RHD models include the MC move in 9/86 (IIRC). I forget when the motronic changed for RHD 635 models...
The ventilation controls may not just look different; they may also work different; at some point the flap controls went from mechnical to electrically powered; I don't know if this coincides with the change in appearance of the controls or not though.
'owing to our policy of continual improvement all specifications are subject to change without notice'......
no kidding! They just couldn't leave anything alone.....
cheers

I have chassis number 8185057 which BMW gave birth to in 6/1982 and it is an E28 based 635CSi but with a 3 speed auto gearbox; given the fallout rate it's probably one of the earliest E28 based cars alive.Brucey wrote:interesting point that.... the following US 633 series, (type code 5274) shows 6725001- 6728592 starting in 3/82. This 635 cab was build by a popular swedish carmagazine in 1992, is now for sale for 145k swedish kr, wich is around 12k ? and in $ around 23k.
Its really well build, and has only been out on road just for meetings nearby.
