Well the metal-shiny tape bit has worked a treat on the reversing lights - I'll report back on the rear light 10w bulbs and dipped beam LED bulbs when I have fitted them.

hornhospital wrote:Dean, could you post exactly what LED bulbs you used (or a link to where you wrote up the swap)? There are so many LED bulbs available these days it's confusing to try and pick the "right" ones.
All the bulbs in the tail light housing are single-filament 1156, so I used these in all positions:

The dome, under hood, trunk, and license plate lights are 39mm festoon type:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2X-WARM-WHITE-3 ... 1866482772

I've had LEDs from this eBay seller in my other cars for 6+ years with no failures so far. You're correct about there being so many choices, but these have worked well for me. Some LEDs are described to not cause an error on the check panel, but I haven't tried any of those, and I'm not sure they're talking about our old E24's. Also, if you want to use LEDs in the signals, you need to replace the flasher unit (in the steering column) with an electronic type:

You're welcome. It's a worthwhile project, and it looks like the LEDs are less expensive than when I did mine a few years ago.

Posting while waiting for the sump and filter to drain, doing an oil change.

Yesterday was better. Met up with a friend, stuck a cooler in the trunk and headed to Sebring for the annual HSR Historic Races. Beautiful weather good racing and nice rides on track, in the paddock, driving and parked around the track. On track were several 02s, a couple 3.0CSi. Spectating: One E28, a modded E31(never caught up with it to check it out), Several 02s and me. Not counting modern ones of which there were quite a few.

The Polaris coupe got quite a bit of attention. One fellow was trying to pry a price out of me. He was pretty serious and we traded cards. I have to think once gone I'd probably regret it, despite thinking an E46 M3(6 speed thank you) could fill the void.

It was a great day. I hadn't had the car out of town in far too long, it ran great. Ready for another.

Very satisfying day of seat swapping. Drivers side was rooted, so replaced it with passenger seat, passenger seat replaced with spare black buffalo seat, with old drivers motor base swapped in. So now I have buffalo passengers, nappa drivers, but compared to how bad the seats were before its like a brand new interior!

After too many years of guesswork with the 635CSi's coolant tank it had become impossible to tell the level so after seeking the wisdom of Ron and finding there is no known chemical that can clean the header tank, I bought and today fitted a new one.

And a new Cap.

And a new overspill line hose.

And re-fitted the clip for the overspill hose.

And changed the coolant.

Heater fan started humming a bit. Took off the cowling cover and put a little lube on the fan motor bearings. all quiet now, at least for the time being.

A leaf fell in mine and I hear clicking noises all week. This weekend it'll be time for a good cleaning to clear it all out.
I'll follow your lead and also grease it up.

I think there's a new tank and hose (tank to heater "T") in my future. Already did the cap and overfill hose.

Nicely done Ron, that will keep you busy for the New Year.

My day today was perfect - finally went and picked up my car after many months in the workshop. Its better than it's ever been, straight'n'true. No rot anywhere and top job done with 650+ photos of the process.

Drive it back home via the M11 in 3rd and 4th listening to the howl.

Better photos to come once sun is out:

Replaced the 635CSi fan and clutch; I managed to get hold of a red fan.

Installed an LED volt-meter in one of the slots underneath the stereo; cost £3; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321548714593

Took delivery of an E24 First aid kit....

Changed oil + filter, changed power steering fluid and filter, took door card off drivers and adjusted window ... then spent 2 hours polishing the wheels.

Tired but happy.
