What did you do to your E24 today?

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Sadly it is time to let one of the gals loose. Just not enough time to devote to her and over the years she needs more attention than I can provide. I have found a new home for my sweet 628csi that is still shining with my favorite all time interiors (Sport Buffalo Nutria). Sad, but still sweet to have it go to a fellow enthusiast who loves and adores E24s. Looking forward to having a partner in crime locally to talk and discuss all the great things that we will be attacking on our 6-series.

Sorry to hear this! There's a lot that's special about that car and you've got a lot of great history with it, but good also that it's staying local for you. I can imagine your dilemma, not wanting to let it go... it's got that awesome interior... it's a classic and it still looks a million bucks... Damn!!
Regards,
Ellis.

Had my Shark out for a 100 mile spin yesterday. The weather here in NJ had cleared the road salt (lots of rain) with a cloudy but dry day yesterday. She sure is a thrill to drive!

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Yes, I've been doing exactly that..."holding on". I was really hoping to find that special Alpine White M635csi with Buffalo Nutria Interiors. I was hoping to swap my interiors with whatever interiors a nice Alpine White M635csi had. I did come across one example of my ideal M635csi color combo, but after researching the car more, it ended up to be a Frankenstein Car. Life goes on...I feel that I am causing the car more hardships, just sitting. The new owner is very excited to take the car on. I have lots of specific parts for the car, but the new owner can't afford all my awesome parts yet. I told him, I'll have them for him when he is ready. I'm glad that I will still be able to see the car once in a while.MrE wrote:

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
- Oil Change - Brad Penn 15w40, Mann Filter
- Power steering fluid flush and filter replacement - 2nd clip kind of sucked to figure out how it came out. Will be much faster when I change the filter in 2042. Actually the existing filter didn't look that bad.
- After fluid changes, I went over the entire engine bay with a bright flashlight looking for trouble. Found it, a small coolant leak on at the radiator bypass line/coolant reservoir hose. Replaced the 5/16" hose and we're good again.
Actually started driving it this week again as there was no rain in the KC forecast. Nice.
Still have to replace the dang drive-shaft CB.

Completely agree. I have both parts (flex/CB), but haven't had the guts to start yet. I've been about 1.5 weeks without some kind of car and/or guitar project, so I think I'm good to start this one.hornhospital wrote:Replace the flex disc at the same time. Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Finally managed to finish the fitment of the LHD headlight aim system to my RHD car. Has taken ages as the pipe routing is non-OEM. Have protected the pipes with silicone tape, slit tube and cool tube extreme (from DEI), so I hope they will last longer than 5 years. Well worth installing given that my 6er is now used as a family car and often gets loaded up with all sorts of stuff.

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Well, removed my polarized rear license plate cover, or I guess I should say a California Highway Patrolman did
I've been "forced" to use the green beast all week to get to work as the missus 5er has been in the body shop, a story for another day
So I pass an accident scene that was literally just finishing cleanup and whatnot, and the CHP pulls behind me to continue his route. Well, instantly, on go the lights and siren, of course I pull over to see what's up his sleeve
His first comment was, "you know, that license plate cover is HIGHLY illegal, not just "illegal"
Yes, I know, didn't just crawl out from under a rock
So he walks around front, then enquires where my front plate is
Uh, in the trunk
This obviously isn't going well
So he attempts to remove the cover, only to find out that he changed vehicles and doesn't have any tools
Oh, well, I can help with that, as I hop outa the car and proceed to show him my tool kit
Oh, very nice, ya know, ya just don't see cars like this around anymore
Had to use the larger red handled screwdriver, I guess that lowered its value
Anyhoo, received a ticket for the plate cover and a fixit ticket for no front plate, which I can clear just as soon as I mount the plate, which has never had installed, ever, almost 27 years of ownership
At least I have something else to do on the 6er this coming weekend

"Installed" the 5 speed shift pattern transfer
Got this transfer from Mo on the board, finally got around to "installing" it yesterday
Looks pretty good and went on just like he said it would
Also replaced the acorn nuts holding down the airbox (thanx Ralph ) as I somehow managed to lose one last time I serviced the air filter
Mine weren't chrome anyway
And, swapped out the passenger side power window switch (thanx again Ralph ) only to find out that I can hear the motor clicking, but no movement of the window
So I guess I'll be in there sooner than later diagnosing, you guys will be the first to know if/when I need parts

It's like when people badge cars randomly. I once saw a V12 badge on a Mercedes SLK.

Had the oil changed by a jokester local outfit.
So normally, I change my own oil. Well it's been raining non-stop in Cali and I don't have a covered area to do an oil change on the e24. On the drive home the other day, my oil service light came on. I thought I would take the opportunity to try some 20/50 as many said my 10/40 is too light an oil for the temperate California climes.
So I was glad to see a special for $39.95 at the local shop. Hmm, seemed like a good deal. They said it was going to take an hour. OK, I thought I'd wait. Glad I did.
First thing I noticed was they couldn't figure out where the o-ring seal was on the filter. They said the old German cars have tricky filters. Huh? It's one of the easiest to access I have seen. Don't have to crawl under it. Next, I see the guy slamming my hood over and over trying to close it. "Wait!" I yelled! Just lay it down and let the lever do the work. Then, they had no idea how to reset the light. Whatever, I'd take care of that myself.
Then it came time to pay. $71.23. What? I went for the $39.95 special. I am informed that this is for 5/30 weight. 20/50 is 5 bucks a quart and my car needed 6 quarts. They could have told me this before all the work. I mean I was sitting in the shop. Man, next time if it's not raining, I'm doing it myself. Last time I did this, the cost for parts was like $30.
Oh, came home and grounded pin 7 on the diagnostic port (3 seconds with key in position 2) and reset the oil light.
Scary part is that I was leaving, a guy in a Maserati GT was watching his car going in for service. Oh boy.

Song, I think you got off lucky. I once met a fellow who told me that he took his old Plymouth into Walmart for an oil change and lube and the "technician" filled the front brake bleed screws with grease and left the tie rod end with no grease. I certainly wouldn't trust my BMW to quick lube shops.

Took my M635CSi out for it's first real drive in several months, as the weather in suburban London is dry, bright and mild today. A gentle drive out towards the country to check everything over became a very thorough workout on some empty sweeping A roads and a return motorway blast.
These cars really don't do themselves justice unless they're allowed to properly stretch their legs, then they become SO communicative, fluid and almost organic in feel compared with modern machinery.
As for the engine the engine. With its linear power delivery, torque, and spine tingling noise at full chat, I had completely forgotten just how good an M88/3 is.
God, I love this car.

Early start .
Fresh engine oil and filter , last of my stock of Duckams 20/50 . I've used this make of oil since I started driving and sadly it's no longer manufactured so end of an era....
Checked all fluid levels ,sprayed Waxoyl over brake and fuel lines on the underside and up under rear quarter panels ,bumper area and up behind Lokari liners .
All good again.
When up on axle stands found rear left brake caliper dragging so removed pads and fitted narrower sections of plywood and moved the pistons beyond their normal travel . Squeezed some Castrol red grease in behind the dust seal to lubricate . Did both sides ,perfect now .
Did some engine bay detailing fitting some new decals and touching up a bit of rough paint along leading edge of bonnet underside . Used airbrush for this and again I cannot recommend this tool enough. Polished the alloy oil filter casing ,when it was off ,to mirror finish . Waste of time as it cannot be seen when fitted ....
Removed both front seats ,cleaned and then airbrush sprayed them with Gliptone extra matt sealer . This gives a lovely deep matt finish on the leather giving a better than new look to them.
Made up a better heat shield to fit between the exhaust and steering box ,polished it to be fitted tomorrow.
And lastly refitted my Remotec wheels . After looking a all the recent photos of BBS RS's on here I had to go back to the Remotecs from the 16" style 5's . I'll get tyres for the style 5's and keep them for a change when the mood takes me .
All ready for Spring now ,if the rain would just stop .
Fresh engine oil and filter , last of my stock of Duckams 20/50 . I've used this make of oil since I started driving and sadly it's no longer manufactured so end of an era....
