What did you do to your E24 today?

Following Chris Wright's excellent explaination of the hydraulic warning lights I figured out my 635's flickering light was low pressure so simply taking the slack up on the belt has fixed that.
Then I discovered the main ventilation fan was only working on high speed so after delving into my spares I found one new transistor and one broken one so I broke out the screwdrivers and now have a fully variable fan speed in the car and two transistors to fix and keep as spares.

Brake upgrade...
Re-building some E34 540 front calipers with new stainless steel pistons ready for fitment later this week. Already fitted 540 rear calipers with HEL stainless brake lines.

I guess my '84 is off her period now. Drove by the 633 again today, and tried to start it. Of course it fired up and ran like nothing had ever been wrong with it. I got it home, and will tear into the electricals ASAP. I can't trust it to drive any distance now until this mystery is solved definitively.

I had a similar problem years ago, ended up being the crankshaft position sensor and the main relay.hornhospital wrote:I guess my '84 is off her period now. Spooky. Years ago my 1982 had exactly the same two intermittent faults at the same time leading to a horrible do-I-scrap-it feeling.euro24 wrote:I had a similar problem years ago, ended up being the crankshaft position sensor and the main relay.hornhospital wrote:I guess my '84 is off her period now. Returning to the thread, I figured out I now need an external fuel pump for the 635; the M6 is running perfectly but will soon get super-discrete oil pressure and voltage gauges.

Another brake upgrade
Bled my new "big brake" upgrade today through the Stahlbus bleeder valves fitted to the E34 540 front and rear calipers. Carefully bedding in the pads now. Original master cylinder still in place and holding up well.

Over the past few days I have fitted a voltmeter and oil pressure gauge to the M635....

And already this morning I have fettled the dizzy cap and rotor arm on the 635CSi to keep it moving until the new ones arrive.

Installed Bert's oil filter adapter and new fuel pump. Cap and rotor are next.

Troubleshot and repaired the problem that left the turbo6 stranded for the first time in over 10 years of ownership(14 actually). Got home on a tow strap and went to work.
Defective main relay and bad b+ connection at the coil. Multiple problems are such a joy.
Next, rear subframe and trailing arm bushings.

A polishing afternoon
After a week in the sun I returned and managed to get the first pass with compound on the DA polisher. Had an absolute nightmare with the lacquer with it just not wanting to flow and ending up with a porridge like texture . Had to wet sand for more hours than I wish to remember . Another compound and then polish should do me .
Stripped the old lacquer off one of the wheels I'll be fitting and polished it . Came up very well but it's a dirty job.
Next , rustproofing ...

Went to the DMV for new plates. Almost legal but for a NY safety inspection. Still have to address the leaking seal on the new water pump. Props to Bavauto for fast shipping a new one under warranty. That's the next job for Garage Queen.

I had to revisit this as I was still suffering fuel supply/pressure problems so I have now cleaned the internal tank gauze/mesh/filter-thingy (that was black and sticky), changed the fuel filter (that was dated 6.6.1989 ), replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter support rubber mounts and replaced a whole load of jubilee clips around the car's fuel system.sharkfan wrote:Changed a failing petrol pump on the 1982 635CSi - from the looks of the clips the old one might have been the original one
The inside of the fuel tank seemed spotlessly clean so lets hope the filters and gauze have done their stuff over the years.

Replaced the Power Steering system. New pump and all new hoses Plus a new brake booster and brake fluid reservoir.
New coolant and washer fluid reservoirs
New engine bay gaskets
Replaced all washer system parts
All new wiper system
And the big stuff...
Bought a new Air Dam from the local dealer (hurry theres only one left in the entire system!)
Installed new Mtech rear spoiler
Bought Racing dynamics side skirts and rear valence (may not keep the valence though)
Been pretty busy
