On Saturday, I drove 120 miles out to Bentonville, Arkansas for a car show and poker run, participated in said poker run (about a 60 mile loop around a lake), and another 120 miles back. 0 issues, not one drip of fluid below where it should be! \:D/
Though, I may have got the brakes quite warm while attacking the hills and twisty bits :oops: Should probably treat the old timer with a bit more.. delicacy. But all is well! I even got it moving pretty quickly on a long, straight highway on the way back (won't go into detail O:) ). 30 years old, doesn't feel like it's lost a single pony.

Removing 2 layers of old purple film...ugh...

The first layer came off in larger sheets, but the older layer in very small strips.

SO wish I'd had a steamer when I did that! HOURS AND HOURS with a single edge razor blade and WD40. It was miserable work.

Did my first ever S38 oil change, followed by a transmission fluid change. The latter was great fun without a lift, working entirely by the braille method!

How do you do that without breaking the demister heater elements? And for part two of that question, how do you restore a working heater element on the back window without having to buy a whole new piece of glass? Are there any businesses that can re-layer a new heater element on old glass?

I just grabbed today three of the unslotted NLA reserve fuel canister retainer washers 82119413201 from a wreckers and dropped them off to the electroplaters for an acid bath and gold cad-plate refurbishment. Been needing an extra couple of these for a while now to hold down a couple of jerry cans I've been restoring.

How do you do that without breaking the demister heater elements?
When using a steamer you heat the film and it loosens(eventually). Then you can rub the film off with a wet microfiber. It will not take the element with it.

If using a razor you would have to be very careful not to cut the element. (The hard way)

The rear window heater element was already damaged beyond use (apparently from a previous removal of tint), so I didn't worry about it. I'd never do that to a working element.

My demister is at least 50% rooted too. I think the bottom half lot of wires are all broken or else have too much reisistance now to carry a current. Is there any service anyone has seen anywhere that can restore the a stick-on heater element wires to an existing piece of glass, or am I just in a fantasy-land thinking this should be a possible service?

I have made inquiries of all the local autoglass suppliers local to me, but all I've gotten from them are blank stares back that make me feel I'm insane for even asking such a stupid question. Surely with window demisters coming in and being present on cars from around the 1950's onwards and those same car's glass being long unavailable new or else extremely expensive one-off reproductions only, you would think there would be a market for demister element replacement on existing unbroken glass.

Installed new Lemforder Differential mount. My car had the original mount, cracked and rock hard. The car sat a little higher with the new mount as the rubber was not compressed.
Car seems to feel better while driving. That may just be in my mind.
Took about 30 minutes, loosen the rear stabilizer bar, made it must easier, Oh, I had use of a lift.

Hummmmm, just now looking at the photo did I install this backwards? As the rubber is beyond the differential. I didn't take a before photo.

Tried to repair coolant leak, have new hoses coming from BMW.

Hmm, looks pretty close to the sway bar there Roger, how much of that slot is left in the diff mount :-k

Interesting though, that the car rides higher now, good job, most likely well needed =D>

Bobbo, went under the car, I believe the diff mount is on correctly as it lines up with the old foot print. I'll double check the next time it's on a lift. The car had a 300 mile trip over the week end and the ride was great.
I located the attached interesting white paper by Pete Read "Worn Diff Mount Causes Negative Camber". My last alignment was May of 2017, see attached. I'm anxious to have alignment checked to see if the camber has changed, it will be a while as the car is in for a respray.

A few weeks ago I finally had a manual conversion done to my car, which has lived as an automatic under my ownership since 1997. For the past couple of years, working with REALOEM, I've been gradually accumulating virtually all the parts needed, many of them new. I sought out and hired someone very experienced to do the actual swap, and he did a fabulous job with great attention to detail. The only problem is, the 265/6 I purchased (from a member of another forum) turned out to have a noisy 1st gear; he has since come through with another tranny (from an '82 528e) which I've re-sealed and will be trying out soon. But at least the lion's share of the work - the swap itself - is finished; R&Ring the tranny will be a piece of cake. Hopefully the 2nd try will be the charm.

I must say, the car's character is completely transformed with the manual box. Over the years I had already done the suspension (Eibachs, Bilsteins, sways, etc.) plus other mods like a Dinan chip, Supersprint exhaust, and a 3.91 diff; it was just begging for the manual. Now the car feels much lighter and always ready to rip, much more entertaining to drive. Until recently I thought I might sell it, but now it's a keeper...especially with the prices of M6s and many other alternatives escalating. This one's bought and paid for, and almost as much fun.

After almost 25 years of E24 ownership I finally changed my first brake bomb, on my 635CSi.

Pretty easy and straight forward in the end; I purchased a set of six sided flare spanners, and just took care to make sure all the unions threaded back together straight and true. After surveying to see if there was room to attempt to just straight off unscrew the accumulator I decided there wasn't and elected to take the attached manifold out with it. Once off the car the accumulator unscrewed relatively easily from its manifold.

My only slight hiccup was that one of the wires going to the brake resovoir cap snapped and the other was close to going so I crimped on some new spade connectors.

Next job is to either try and patch the car's shoddy (and now tank sounding) exhaust, or bite the bullet and buy a Fritz system. I can't find any mild steel replacement exhausts and BMW will want as much, or perhaps more, than the £600 for a Fritz system.

Fitted a front strut bar.

I am very surprised at how much sharper the front feels.

I thought it would be as much for bling, but not so.

BTW, I only went for it after Brucey posted similar thoughts. Brucey know stuff.

1st April, winter's over in the UK! Taxed the M and went for first drive since the end of September. Throttle a bit sticky to start, so woke the neighbours up. Drove sedately and maturely for ten miles or so, then cried havoc and let fly the dogs of 24v M banshee wail!

Then the severe weather warnings reminded my that I live in the UK, so went home again before the storms set in.

Thought it would look neat and also merely for the fact that I can.

Ended up not enjoying it as much as I thought, I think between my paint color and the orange corners it just didnt mesh as well

Now I know.

Looking to replace the center link and one of the contol arms next week.

Brought her out of slumber, and ordered a custom plate which will arrive soon.

B3TYWHT will be on the plate.

My dirt roads are hell, but I made it out of my neighborhood without major incident or dirtying. She's as glorious as ever to drive. Drive was great, no traffic, a great morning, and then it had to snow. None stuck, and now its 55 degrees, but man mother nature does not want to let go of winter here in Michigan.

Exhaust needs some anti-drone treatment, but sounds great of course. Tint needs removed, oil leaks need fixing, and she needs one hell of a polish, along with the rest of the plasti-dip rubbed off the window and body trims.

Cranked engine minus coil until oil pressure lamp extinguished and then started and brought it up to temp whilst checking all was well .
First time running since last October . Great to see out in the daylight again ready for a run this weekend.
Shall clean ,polish and then check all levels plus pressures tomorrow .
Winter's been a bitch here in Ireland .

Took delivery of a Fritz Bitz exhaust system for my 635CSi; I've had the car over 20 years and put an almost new but secondhand system on it when I bought the car so I think I've had my moneys worth out of it. I just hope the rest of the car will pull itself through an MoT at the end of next month.

Before that though is Friday the 13th this week..... and the M635CSi's MoT...

Calibrated my speedometer...so it now reads exactly the same as my gps in the 60~80mph range and about 1mph fast at 40mph. Previously it was reading about 10% fast which was a bit much for my likeing.

My '85 e24 Euro had the speedometer replaced with a US spec version during federalization. Upon inspection it has a potentiometer that can adjusted to the speedometer. It only took a very slight change to get it where I wanted it. I ended up stopping in a parking lot and removing the unit 5 times to get it right. Search youtube for speedo calibration E30 to see where the pot is.
