flatted all the cracks out with 240 grade wet and dry (wet), used some heavy leather filler for deeper creases but didn't go OTT as wanted to keep some of the leather character without looking to perfect! then applied the dye with a gravity fed touch up spray gun. I used Bespokeleatheringltd dye as it has a good reputation and the end product looks great for a 1st time seat repair job!dwcains wrote:Looks great. What did you do?

That looks great! I really have to reconsider my "Comfort" seats. However, lots of other things to deal with for now.... another major item on my To Do list.Mark Shutt wrote:today I decided to have a go at restoring my drivers seat as it was a little tired and cracked in places but good overall condition.. Lotus silver and it came out pretty good for a 1st attempt, now it shows the passenger seat up so have to do that one now!

Basic leather resto question: Do I do a Leatherique treatment before I do an airbrush recoloring? Or after?

Before. Basically you'd be airbrushing the dirt and oil if you paint them first. Then most of the color will come off with the subsequent Leatherique treatment.

I also sourced the dye plus materials from BL and found John very helpful.Mark Shutt wrote:flatted all the cracks out with 240 grade wet and dry (wet), used some heavy leather filler for deeper creases but didn't go OTT as wanted to keep some of the leather character without looking to perfect! then applied the dye with a gravity fed touch up spray gun. After a year I noticed the wear areas were showing a slight sheen and as I wanted a true matt finish I cleaned and applied their GT3 Matt sealer and can vouch for it's effectiveness . Would suggest you apply it ,if you haven't already .
Nice job there .

Finally fixed the in-operative speedo on my 635CSi
After loads of testing I finally traced it to a broken track on the circuit board that the coolant and fuel gauges are mounted to; rather than attempt to fix the track which looks like it has corroded through from a leak from the pesky re-chargeable batteries I simply wired over from one end to the other to complete the circuit.
I am VERY happy now it's fixed

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
I finally got round to finishing the windshield washer tubing, by installing the Oetiker clamps that have been sitting in my toolbox for at least a year. The hoses were actually tight enough, and not leaking without the clamps, but the job looked unfinished. I cheated and used non-original parts where they couldn't easily be seen:
Here's the "before" pic:
This $15 motor from NAPA is a perfect fit into the intensive washer tank, and it even includes the rubber seal and fits the original electrical connector. To fit this motor on the main tank, I had to cut a notch in the original bracket and enlarge the old rivet holes to fit some wire ties.

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Drove up to Milbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire yesterday - @ 100miles mainly motorway M25, Dartford Crossing, A1M
While there, I was fortunate to participate in a day targeting individuals to buy new Aston Martins, of which, suffice to say, I'm not one but IMHO did arrive in the coolest car.
- Most surprising was the Rapide which didn't feel like a large 4 door round the twisty mountain course,
- Most surreal was driving the DB11 round the banked bowl at 100mph with my hands off the wheel
- Most exhilarating was flooring the Vanquish S down the 1 mile straight albeit reduced to 3/4 mile due to engineering works but still getting to 160mph before casually bringing it to a halt.
As an aside one of my instructors raced a E24 635 back in the day
Drove back in the rush hour, nice to mix it with all the usual humdrum euro boxes and made good time

Fitted new exhaust system last night.
Can't complain, the old one was the original (29 years old)

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Replaced my slightly saggy hood lifts with model 1513BN made by Stabilus through FCP Euro at about $12@. I still use the ol' broom handle as a safety measure just in case.
Anyone need a pair of oldies?
I was at an antique/old stuff sale today and there was a guy from Florida who make lamps, baskets objets, etc out of old golf clubs. He gets them for free from the consignment shops there and uses well over 10,000 per year. Can't figure out what to do with the shafts and only uses the heads or grips. Must be some creative types out there....

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Complete suspension overhaul complete on the e24. Car only has 98,000 miles but the suspension was done. All new bushings (rubber), end links, H&R Sports, and Billy HD's front and rear. Car drives amazing now, very sporty but not too stiff. The 3.46 LSD swap also helped the fun factor. Now I just need get the last two shifter bushings replaced, what a pain they are.

Reset the service light using a test lamp as detailed on this fantastic site, I've only had the car a short while and so far have found this site invaluable.

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Sun roof drains.
Needed space in the garage to work on the washing machine. Lots of tropical moisture coming in from the Gulf, so its been raining like a hurricane without the wind. Fortunately not near as bad as Harvey in TX.
Pulled back in the garage and one rear seat had a hat swimming in it. I''ve never had an issue before today.
Thankfully I own a bore scope which made it easy to guide my cleaning tool. I could see the lake over the top of the drain tube. All good now.

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
I went to a car show about 70 miles away yesterday. Lovely trip until just as I was leaving the town where the show was held the clutch pedal hit the floor and the car stayed in gear! Pretty obvious that a master or slave cylinder crapped out. No fluid leak so I drove it about 60 miles back home on mainly highway starting in first using the starter and then shifting without the clutch. As I approached the city with multiple traffic lights I had it towed the last 10 miles on my CAA membership card. Today I checked the slave and it seems fine so I began to remove the master cylinder. Both were installed about 4 years ago and maybe 10km and are the Sachs brand so I am a bit peeved that it would be no good in such a shot while. The pedal box is solid and has the reinforcement plates installed. I am at the point of trying to get the metal pipe fitting loose. It is a PITA trying to fit an 11mm flare but box end onto that fitting and find that it won't come loose. I may have to resort to removing the end of the line at the slave and sliding a box end up to the fitting as I don't want to damage that fitting! Thats how I spent the afternoon.

Continued with the long arduous task of getting everything clean prior to the upcoming m90 reassembly. This weekend focused on the oil pump and pistons. Also helped my brother adjust the valves in my old 633 that is now his pride and joy.

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Not so much done to my E24, as noticed my E24 doinf to itself.
Those who notice my occasional posts might have noticed my battle of attrition to attain a reliable working speedo, and after many months this and countless hours of fault tracing I managed this in the summer.... only for the temperature gauge to give up the week after.
The temp gauge became intermittent for a time until the end of last week when it suddenly returned with full vigour.... only for the speedo to give up again.
AARGH!!!!
I did nothing for a few days and then due to perhaps some strange alignment of celestial objects, divine intervention or just simple spooky E24 Halloween electrical goings on, they now both work.
I have resolved myself to do nothing once again for fear of upsetting whatever fragile detente exists between these temperamental measuring devices.
Meantime, everyone, after me, 'OH GREAT AND BEAUTIFUL BIG COUPE, HEAL THYSELF'.
Amen.
