Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Rear lights taken out on my 635CSiA and any and all dirt cleaned off everything, any little bits of corrosion treated and painted, the light seals gummi-plfeged and all put back together again. I do this every autumn to keep the seals in good order and try to prevent creeping moisture and corrosion from around the rear lights. While every thing was apart I scrubbed, cleaned and treated the rest of the boot, before giving all the carpets a good vacuum. I also gummi-ed the boot lid seal.
The frame seals (which are currently unavailable) are in fair to good condition but the lens seals are crushed right up so new ones have been ordered.
Then I took the passenger door card off again to finish off fixing and lubing the window guides - all working again and again, any little bits of corrosion treated and the inside of the door cleaned out.

Changed the water pump on the '88 635 today.
Plans were to change the pump and put the adjustable voltage reg in, then pull the rad in my Sierra and clean it, change the p/s pump and change the windshield washer pump seal. But as my ass was dragging about ten feet behind me today, I got started late and it took me four hours to change the water pump! Just one of those days...
I did drive the 6er home though...

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Reassembled the entirety of the interior last night:
-Door panels & hardware sorted out on the floor, then installed
-Shift boot installed
-Floor mats put in
-Exterior window belt molding installed (which led me to find rust on the mirror triangle metal)
-Sunroof seal salvaged from my old 5-series sunroof
-Trunk seal cleaned and stretched a bit so it wouldn't pull back from the corners
-Removed 200 lbs of scrap exhaust steel from the trunk.
Next will be cleaning the entire interior with a vacuum and some cleaning solutions.
Oh, and I ordered a mirror switch.
Will be washing the car later today once I am home from work. She drove beautifully this morning, and really seems to like regular gas just fine. OBC says I'm averaging 27.3 MPG (which I doubt), so we will see when I need gas. So far, I've done 120 miles and haven't even neared the half-tank mark.

Speaker replacement day again for the M635CSi; the second-hand Pioneer TS-1660's with the quirky adjustable ("Tilt-Axial" according to PIoneer) tweeter and mid-range were well past their best and I spied a set of NOS Pioneer TS-1690's with the same Tilt-Axial mechanism but this time 4-way speakers; woofer, mid-range, tweeter and super-tweeter.
They aren't OEM but with already butchered rear pods I have tried to go as retro-correct as I can and the box is dated 1983.

Oh, I could tell you stories about the fuel gauge. Still struggling with it about 1 year later despite replacing the sender and other things.francoid wrote:Be careful that BMW fuel gauges are known to only ever be accurate at full and empty
It always starts as full, then settles in after a bit of driving. Even when it's 1/2 tank it'll say "full" and then settle in about 10-15 minutes.
I average 278-300 miles per tank. I have also noticed that my mileage is about 20-22mpg when I commute.

Wow, I'd forgotten all about those speakers! I had a similar set in the early '80's with a white cone 8" woofer, but the trim was round and silver iirc. Sounded great in the large rear deck of my '78 Rabbit hatch.sharkfan wrote:Speaker replacement day again for the M635CSi; the second-hand Pioneer TS-1660's with the quirky adjustable ("Tilt-Axial" according to PIoneer) tweeter and mid-range were well past their best and I spied a set of NOS Pioneer TS-1690's with the same Tilt-Axial mechanism but this time 4-way speakers; woofer, mid-range, tweeter and super-tweeter.

Hey, I found 'em. Ts-1600, had a funky tweeter standing on top with a louvered lense! Those were the days.

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Not today, but Tuesday. Dropped the car off to a good local shop to do the rear subframe and trailing arm bushings, pitman arms as well as the diff mount. This is significant since I have had the parts for an embarrassingly long time. This is the only job I have not done on the car since it showed up in my garage back in '01. I justify it with business is good so time is limited, or there is not enough height in my garage for a lift.
I look forward to no longer having 4 wheel steering.

Doesn't the E63 M6 have "Integral Active Steering"? Maybe your E24 had it before it was in fashion?RossDinan6 wrote:I look forward to no longer having 4 wheel steering

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Since I am not in the E63 demographic I haven't looked very close at their specs. I'll stick with my analog old gal, she can be tough enough to keep alive sometimes. I doubt I'll ever be fashionable, I think I prefer a stable direction when changing throttle positions.
No call from the shop this week as I'd hoped. My garage is a little sad right now.

All I did today is take a nice drive. However, my new-ish t-stat is acting up. Not getting to mid-way and staying at 11am. It may be either slow in closing or not closing at all. More testing needed.

That's about where mine runs, although it does get to straight up in heavy traffic.

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
I've just started adapting the S38B36 harness for LOCUTUS. Needed to splice in the existing C101 (fuse box) connector into the E34 M5 X20 plug (removed). Also decided to extend the relay panel out so that I can mount it at the fuse box a la E24 style. Looks like a rats nest but will tidy up OK. I won't be heat shrinking or taping up until engine testing is complete.

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Both of my M30 cars have been this way. They should run at 11 AM while moving, and fluctuate to no more than straight up in traffic on a hot day. No more at all. Otherwise, change your fan clutch. Trust me, your heat still works just fine (mine is quite hot) at 11 AM.sansouci wrote:All I did today is take a nice drive. However, my new-ish t-stat is acting up. In other news, I changed the seat back on my driver's seat with one with bolsters that weren't blown out. Makes an immense difference in comfort. Need to change the seat bottom over with motors and everything, since mine is shot, torn, and bottoms out with about 50 pounds on it. Little painful.

I removed cluster and changed odometer gears that were worn out. I also changed the batteries for the SI lights. Those dead batteries were causing a slow drain on the main car battery.

Drove it ...120 miles of bliss.
Annual autumn run with my local classic vintage vehicle club. A diverse and catholic range of vehicles from an early series Landrover to a Hooper and Barker bodied Rolls Royce drophead .The route took us up into and through the Caha Mountains on roads no more than 25 miles from my home ATCF's that I have never driven or even knew of .Lunched at the highest pub in Ireland . Glorious.

Changed the 5w tail light bulbs to 18.6w. My-my they now glow as bright as the sun.
(Thanks Jim from "Idiotfest" they were very-very weak.)
Cleaned it up and drove to enter it in AACA Hershey nationals.

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
Replaced the breake pedal bearing as it was moving sideways some mm. As I'm picky it drove my crazy.
Theory: From the drawings it looks like your just replace two inserts (#9).
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpar ... Id=35_0053
Reality: There is only one insert, the bearing seat in the pedal is conical on one side (easy to fix), the new inserts are .5 mm to wide and after pressing the inserts in the rod doesn't fit anymore. I had to ream the hole by .25 mm. If you got the proper tools in hand a quite easy job.
Now I own a adjustable reamer
Tomorrow I'll hopefully pass the two year TÜV (fearing the Smog test a lil bit...)

Re: What did you do to your E24 today?
This break I concentrated on suspension. Replaced the lower control arms, tie rods, and dog bones. Thrust arms were in OK condition, having been replaced before. I wanted to get my Ireland Engineering sway bars (25mm front, 18mm rear) installed. But typically, even though advertised as an easy "bolt in", they are far from that. If you wanted to do a third rate job I suppose they would be, but I will be welding in the support brackets.
Also started sizing up the new carbon air box for fitment. Need to slightly modify the brake regulator hose, but otherwise should fit up OK.

Removed the recently non-operative Cruise Control stalk; took it apart, cleaned all the contacts, re-located the ball-bearing I discovered on the carpet mat, bound the switch together with two tie-wraps to prevent future switch explosions and re-installed it ready for testing tomorrow morning.
Edit to add; all tested and working correctly.

There was a crack below my LF fog light in the front valance and a second crack in the side. Since it also had a few scrapes and scratches I decided to have it repaired and repainted.
Additionally, I removed the front plate bracket and installed the front bumper 'BMW' filler.
