That's not abuse. That's what the E24 was made for, to be driven. Nothing sadder than a garage queen that is beautiful but unused.

I used some off-the-shelf STP Multi-Purpose DexII/III. It was something like $23 for a gallon, and so far it's been quite alright. I'd like to know how different fluids stack up against each other, or if there is any meaningful difference between them all. But oh well, so long as it works and doesn't grenade things, I'm happy :-"

I agree, these are the ultimate driving machine. I installed a new shiny Bosch coil last week or so ago, and bought a metal oil cap for the valve cover.

Replaced the idle air control valve last week, replaced all the 3.5mm vacuum lines this week. Idle seems improved, and the lines I was throwing out were clearly past their prime.

Had been hoping that this would cure my hard start issue as well, but I'm not convinced. Seemed to start perfect when cold, but still doesn't seem to like starting again once warm unless I give it some throttle. Could be leaky injectors or something? Temperature was a bit cool today, and my cold start was flawless after the car had sat a week.

Thanks for the comments. I’ll get around to a proper intro shortly but in summary think I got lucky !
1986 M635CSi NZ new (#328) RHD, I’m the third owner with the last guy owning it since 1991.

Currently 115k km but at 89k (in 91 when he bought it) he had the BMW dealer fit the ACS kit and wheels and sent the engine off to Dinan. It came back as a 3.8, Shrick cam etc. must have spent a fortune.

Never been dinged, no rust original paint, anthracite buffalo leather. Unused for a number of years so all the usual stuff like fluids, bushes, belts, brakes have needed doing.Replaced main fuel pump and sender as gummed up, found a NOS AC radiator to replace leaky original. New tires transformed it.

Only dead thing Is the OBC, tho it lights up.

Same couple of BMW gurus have serviced it it’s whole life. Head of BMW car club and one or two others have known about it but no one has seen it for some years. I’m fixing that by driving it whenever possible. Shortly bound for a solid day or two on the Dyno for a well overdue tune up. Be interesting to see what it can deliver.

Added eyelet leads for my CTEK battery charger. And worked on the Leatherique for the back seats. I guess if you leave the Prestine Clean too long, it gets gummy. So my next step is to re-do the Rejuvenator oil.

Well that's it for another year .
Several heavy night frosts and subsequent over enthusiastic spreading of roadsalt means winters here and it's time for bed . :(

Washed , clayed, polished topside, underside thoroughly cleaned and re waxoyled in those deep, hard to get to cavities and then prep'd for hibernation.
You guys with all year sunshine should be very grateful.

Wow thats that's something we don't have to contend with here. We have crap roads, ice and grit in winter, lots of lose metal and melting tar in summer, and anal speed enforcement but no salt. When I see underside pics of northern hemisphere cars I realise how fortunate we are in that respect.

What do you do to keep amused in the winter?

Changed from summer to winter wheels. Topped off the transmission and swapped out the old, cracked front spoiler
with a new one that almost matches the color of the car. How cool is that?

No diagrams Ken but let me describe the areas that I regularily attend to .
The most important one is this section shown here .

This plug allows acces into the closed cavity at the rear of the sill ( rocker) an is the only way that rust proofing fluid can be applied to it. I use an air powered schutz gun for the job but if you thin the fluid down enough you could use a plunger oil can at a push , it would at least get some fluid in there .
Remove the boot (trunk) trims and shoot fluid up into the inner wheel arch areas thinning it enough to allow it to run into all the crevises. It should run down the passenger compartment side of the arch if thnned enough but to be sure I remove the rear seats and side panels for all the time it takes.
With these removed I can shoot fluid down into the sills ( rockers )untill it runs out of the factory drain holes ( into a catch container ) .
When I restored the car I drilled 1 inch holes into the top face of the sills under the stainless trims ,this gives access to the front of the sills and jacking points without having to remove carpets etc . The holes are sealed with plastic grommets under the bright trim.
I have Lokari front inner wing liners fitted . These are so good that there is no need to re apply rustproofer under the front wings and I cannot stress enough that every E24 owner should fit them if their cars are subject to road salt or even gravel/grit . If my car didn't have them then I'd be hosing under the wings regularly and re coating the rustproofing every six months .
Lastly coat the corners right up in behind the bumpers and all around the subframe mounts taking care to keep the mix off the rubbers.

Incidently I've been making my own " waxoyl " mix for a couple of years now and after initially trialing it on my work van can say that it really works. The recipe is easily available on the 'net but I use a cheese grater to get the wax as small as possible which allows it to dissolve better . In addition instead of lamp oil I use chainsaw bar oil . These two alterations give the mix a more smoother and creeping texture .
Lastly one other mod that may be of interest to those who run wider than stock wheels. I covered the lowered painted areas behind each wheel with 3M auto clear film. This was easy to apply using a hair drier to enhance the flexibility of the film and is 100% clear with no shading. It prevents road grit and gravel chipping or abrading the painted surfaces without having to revert to mudflaps.
Interestingly it also causes a dramatic reduction to the cling factor of Irish cow shit ........

I feel for you guys in the frozen north. That doesn't mean tin worm won't happen in the south. I have a couple blisters that I keep on ignore at this point on my lifetime Florida '84.

Did a bit of road tuning on the Autronic standalone before the cold front weather hit (Ya'll don't laugh, OK? It did cool off some). I never spent much time improving the fuel economy since the drivability was good. If all goes well we will make a run to Sebring next weekend for the IMSA extra race for the Michelin test for next year.

Many thanks for the waxoyl tutorial. I remember the days of Ziebart but never saw it applied to a 6'er. I guess this is the modern equivalent.

You're very welcome Ken.
FYI "Waxoyl" is a proprietary brand of rustproofing agent marketed in UK for decades. It's literally a wax oil mixture . many lambast it citing modern agents as vastly superior and condemning it as useless.
I've used it very successfully for several of those decades now and if it is applied by compressed air using the correct gun with diligence it works very well. It's not a durable surface coating but a very effective cavity rust proofer .

Finally got front bumper assembly back on the car as I convert to shadowline, and replaced smashed foglight.
Grills r next n that will be it.
Also mcGiver a plate filler until I could find another BMW filler.
Also painted fan red n got it back on car (GM block paint matched up pretty well to OE color)

Drove to Sebring for the IMSA Michelin Encore race. Nice 100 mile ride. 3 more hours of racing. Great thing to do with the 6. Haven't had it out of town for a while.

May I ask where you got your replacement new underbonnet\hood insulation pads from? Mine are crumbling away and I need to do the replacement. Big job, but I've done it once on an E28, so I know what I'm in for. I just need a source for the peel off, sticky back pads to put back on after I scraper and clean away all the rubbish from the old ones.

I had a pretty good day at the salvage yard yesterday and today..

I'll start with the smallest pleasures. I found a couple interesting items in various BMWs around the lot. First, a velcro sticker explaining how to stow 3 golf clubs in your Ultimate Driving Machine's boot :P The other being a nifty scan tool made by BavAuto that plugs in to the diagnostics port! A $140 tool just sitting in the trunk of a random car, waiting to get fouled by water or crushed :shock:

Next was the thing I actually went there for, and it was a functional cruise control stalk! Came out of an '86 E30, and the parts are identical. There was a fair bit of surface oxidation, so I sanded the metal bit down to bare metal and sprayed it with satin black all-purpose paint. Didn't quite turn out perfect, but I'm happy with it, and now I can use my cruise control again \:D/

And now for the most interesting bit. I found a complete set of BBS RC090s on an E39 that recently entered the yard. I'm not sure what went wrong or why it was there, but all 4 wheels were still present (!!!), looked pretty straight, and had no rash on any of the lips. Granted, the paint job looks like it came from a rattle can on all 4, but I didn't see any knicks or major scratches (aside from flaking paint). Even the bolts on the back are all pretty clean with no rust, and testing a few yielded encouraging results that (hopefully) none are stuck. And, since salvage yards typically only base prices off of size (if even that), I felt like I was robbing them at the price they asked :-" So it looks like I may have a project over Thanksgiving break!
