What's up with Style 5's?
They seem to be the wheel everyone wants. So, they are 16 inch, and they look nice but why are they the in demand wheel?

It's the seventeen inch two-piece bolted rim that everyone wants. They really suit the car is the simple answer, looking very much like the RS007 metric wheel which graced the M635 until they were all recalled for leaking air! Cross spokes are bound to suit an older BMW, appearing "period" and generally having a decent dish.
For me, it's 16" all the way. RSs with polished rims and gold centres please.
16" Hartges will have to do outside of dream-on world in the meantime.
Wheels are the most direct way of stamping your personality on the car I suppose and the style 5s show you've got taste!
The 16" cross spokes from the E39 are nice, with the wider wheel from the E38 causing problems with clearing the front strut.

Thank you. I purchased a set of the 15 inch BBS rims with BMW center caps, I think they came off a 5 series, circa 1990. I think they are much better then the stock "TRX" wheels.
I do worry about adequate tire inventory.
I like the style 5's but don't care for what looks like "bolt heads" going around them.
I have seen some other BMW wheels that would fit that I would think would look nice, on Craigs List.

Style 5 RC090's were top of my list of must have wheel when I was searching for a car .
When I bought mine it came with the original Mahle 6x14's and a set of 17 inch RX copies fitted.
Driving the car 325 miles back home I couldn't help notice that the 17's were OK ish... on smooth roads but when i got back down into the SW of Ireland where the roads are more agricultural than boulevard it felt awful, harsh and uncompromising.
I decided to go for 16" wheels instead. I wanted a bit more dish than the 5,7 and 8 series style 5's offered so found and bought a set of Remotec's from Germany.
The style 5's are a beautiful wheel but like you I was never sold on the exposed bolts but the almost exponential values of these wheels has diminished their desirability in my eyes. ( mean Scotsman that I am ....)

Staggered set RC090 & 91
I bought a set of 17 x 8, started refinishing.
I then got a hold of a pair of 17 x 9.
I modified the center caps to receive an after market RC center.
After 1.5 years I finally finished, and installed 225's on the front and 265's on the rear.
Best,

Plenty of love for the style 5 17" 2 piece rims here.
Style5 covers 1piece rims as well. Generally not so sexy but still nice. I have a set of 16x7 on the e23 and I like them and they give a nice soft ride. Still if I had a choice 17" 2 piece would be selected.

Wow some of those are seriously wide. The 17 x 9's? I can't believe they fit and I would think they would add to cornering ability greatly.
There was a pair on Kansas City CL I think 16 inch. I would think 16 inch with a medium aspect tire would be best for OVERALL handling, performance and ride.
I thought I did well to find the 15 inch. I think they are 15 x 7 and that's a good old American muscle car size.

Good old american "muscle cars" usually had some really narrow wheels..
E24's can with the correct ET swallow as much as 10" wide rims in the rear without stretching the tires, front can take up to 9" width. If you go any bigger than that you'd probably have to stretch the tires and / or roll your car's fender lips.
I personally think 16" wheels are the perfect combination of looks and comfort on the E24. But 17" is the finest looking if you are willing to offer some comfort to look good, althought it's really not that bad for comfort either.. Width and tyre brand also have a lot to do with how the car is handling, not to mention the overall condition of the car's suspension parts such as bushings, ball joints, wheel alignment, slack etc. Which size and wheels that looks best on the car also differ with rideheight, color of the car, which spoilers it have and so on.. What's important is that you as the owner of the car likes them, so you would just have to choose for yourself. Wouldn't it be boring if everyone had the same wheels, color, rideheight, and int/exterior trim?
But i must say.. 18" or bigger is mostly to big on a E24 in my opinion. You may have as much as 18" on a E23 (which are bigger and have bigger wheels to start with) and it would still look good, but for the E23's I think 17" are the perfect combination of looks and comfort. For the best comfort I'd say 16" on the E23, while 15" is a little to spongy.

I have the staggered 18" Style 5's on my 635 (18x8 and 9). I was originally going to custom build a set of wheels for the car when I picked it up, but what drew me to the Style 5's was the price over a custom set and fact that the first one that I had seen was on a set, and it had captivated me from the start. In the end I had made a very good choice, as my M Parallels turned out to be replicas with cracked rear barrels.
I personally don't think that the 18's are too big for the car, but it may be the fact that mine is slammed

The difference between 16-17-18 in rims
Hi,
I went from the m6 TRX to 225-18's and then to 225-17's.
I never had any problems with handling or tramelineing.
I place most of the problem on the tires, that are chosen. Ie for example some tires are noisy, and some are quiet.
Go figure.

Most owners fitting the 17's end up choosing 235/45 and 255/40 tyres to the staggered 8 and 9 wheels. This staggered tyre set up suits the E24's over-steering characteristics better than the 'square' set-up that the cars all left the factory with (except Alpina's).Bryan Moran wrote:Wow some of those are seriously wide. The 235/45 and 255/40 also offer a greater sidewall height, and hence comfort levels, that the 240/45 TRX's that the M635's were provided on and in reality the overly engineered construction aspect of the TRX wheels means there is not that much difference in rolling diameter.

Jay - that is some serious bling!
Bryan - The 15" Michelin MXV tire is NLA so I've been finding 1 or 2 on ebay as that is what I also use for my 93 740il. But its old rubber and even if stored well, the rubber deteriorates.
I'm told the only replacement is a Kumho but I have no idea about performance, durability or noise.
