I got a quote from UPS for ground freight to ship a boxed auto trans (total weight about 250lbs) from NYC to Atlanta for almost $800! WTF! I made my inquiry directly to UPS Ground who needed a commodity code to properly classify the freight.
I'm trying to send a 5HP30 for a rebuild....
Does anyone have a better solution?

Commodity codes are used to classify freight by shippers- the higher the numerical commodity code, the more expensive it will be to ship the item. The codes are based on paying out claims for damage and loss. If you use a commodity code of 150, this is for more fragile freight than if you used commodity code 80 for basic engine and transmission parts.
Shop around using the lower number and let us know what you find.
Also, when shopping for a carrier, ask if they make the point "direct". If not, that means that they hand off the frieght to another carrier for the delivery. This just makes it more expensive and the increases risk of loss.
Good luck- / henryc
