Pure Performance Motorsports in Australia

Post by ///Moe »

Hi, does anyone have experience with Pure Performance Motorsport in Australia?
I ordered and paid for a set of M30 forged pistons from them three months ago and haven't heard anything from them since.

They responded to all of my questions and helped me through the payment process, said they had a set of pistons in stock and that they would send them to me shortly. Well.. It's been about 3 months now since I paid for the order and every single attempt to contact them through email afterwards, they won't respond to. I have tried several times and the last time I wrote that I would start the process of getting my money back if they didn't at least give me an update on my orderstatus. No response on that either..

I understand that certain bits and pieces that are being specially made can take several months to produce, but not replying after recieved payment and using more than three months to send me parts they said they had in stock isn't good business etiquette..

I'm worried I might never recieve anything from them and that I might throw away several more months getting pistons made somewhere else. Does any of you have any experience with them or live nearby them or something?

I knew some of the locals would chime in! :-)
Another good reason bigcoupe is such a powerful resource.
I have PM'ed you some information about the order, I don't want you to feel obligated to contact them but I would appreciate it a lot if you do.

I saw something similar happend on a Porsche forum when someone didn't get any response from them after paying for their items, needless to say it ended happily after all.

Thank you! :P

Hi Moe. Sorry to hear you're having these issues and hope gets resolved to your satisfaction.

Mind if i ask why you chose these guys over say Paul Burke or JE, as I'll likely be shopping for some next year.

Thanks

Sorry didn't have time to contact them today. Will contact them tomorrow.

Often it's not a bad idea to call as sometimes emails get redirected to spam filters etc. ppm is only 20km from my house so it's easy to contract compared to trying from Finland.

I got in contact with him today. Hr has had IT hosting problems and moved to a new host only recently so all email has been "lost". He is still in business and has asked for you to resend emails directly. I'll follow up if you don't hear anything in the next few days. I would have thought that there would be some other records if money has changed hands but small automotive businesses often are not great in this area worldwide it seems.

Hopefully we here some positive outcome in next few days.

Thank you a lot, Gaz! :-)

I would have called them myself if nothing else worked, the reason I haven't done so already is because I have had a lot to do lately, the different time zones and the fact that I'm not all that good at speaking english. I prefer using email or similar when communicating internationally, although most people would understand me when I'm speaking as well.

I paid through paypal, so finding the reciept that I paid shouldn't be any problem.
I'll send them another email and see if they respond.

To be honest, I didn't research the other manufacturers all that good before ordering from PPM. The reason I ordered from PPM is because they were cheaper than most (like wiseco), and because I got a recommandation from a buddy of mine who have rocker arms from PPM in his 745i. Based on their website and high amount of specially manufactured tuning parts they seemed very serious, and I thought they would be a easier place to buy from than others with shorter delivery time etc. I have no knowledge about Paul Burke, didn't know he manufactures pistons.

I haven't seen all that many engine builders using pistons from PPM and thought I would give it a try.

Last friday I finally got a reply from PPM, with appologies for the delay and so on.
They said they would send the pistons the following week, but soon after I got another message from them about the size of the pistons. That it was wrong or something. I sent them a reply confirming which size I need to ensure they doesn't send me the wrong ones.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens next, all fingers crossed! :P
I hope it doesn't take all that long before I get them.

Well, since you paid by Paypal, you can initiate a chargeback if they don't send you the goods soon

I just got a tracking number from them today! :-)
Seems like this got an happy ending after all, now I just have to wait for the package to arrive and see what's inside. Fingers crossed I get the right parts.

Again, thank you for helping me out Gaz! :P

Oh well better late than never.

No problems helping a fellow 6er out.

Sometimes things go wrong with emails where rather than waiting for months in the dark the telephone is a good weapon.

I finally got the pistons yesterday, but they have sent me the wrong one's..
I ordered pistons with 8.5:1 compression ratio and recieved some with. 8.0:1..
And a LOT of PPM stickers.

But I guess I'll just have to live with it, I don't want to wait any longer now.
Previous pistons I had in the engine was 7.5:1, so it's still a bit up from what it was.
I don't know how much of a difference it makes, but the pistons are made from E34 specifications and E34 M30's have (if I remember it correctly) bigger combustion chamber in the cylinderhead than I have, plus I have shaved both block and cylinderhead on mine. So It will probably be above 8.0:1 still. Just thinking loud now.

Nothing a bit more boost can't change, except it will be a bit more lazy at the bottom.

Why not insist that they supply the correct ones? You've waited so long now, does a couple more weeks really matter?

If you stay with these 8.0:1s and the performance is not what you wanted, you'll be kicking yourself every time you drive the car!

Just my 2c.

That's disappointing. If u don't have clerance issues perhaps order a thin 40thou MLS gasket along with the shaved head/block will bump compression up.

Considering their track record on delivery already, he's liable to end up waiting as long for a set of 8.5s as he did for the incorrect 8.0s. If time doesn't matter, ask for the set you ordered.

If my calculations are right these pistons will give me a CR of 8.65:1, so maybe they aren't as wrong as I thought in the first place.
According to this calculator: http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?t=51939

These pistons are made to give a CR of 8.0:1 in an M30B35, and if you reduce cylinder head cc from 65cc to 58cc (as mine have) I end up with around 8.65:1. If I do the same thing with pistons made to give a CR of 8.5:1 in an M30B35 I end up with around 9.25:1, which is higher than I want. Unless I did something wrong or the calculator is inaccurate.

I didn't know the different cylinderheads would change the CR that much.
Perhaps I didn't get the wrong pistons in the first place, 8.65:1 I can definitely live with.

I have already checked the gap on the piston rings and all were within spec, two of them were a bit tight but I have filed them to the correct specification. Piston to head clearance (squish) will be aproximate 0.75mm, which is fine and about the same as the old pistons.
