White E24s - especially "M"s - where did they all
Soperman made a comment about white cars.
Since its raining and dreary outside, I decided to get my anorak on and count up the number of RHD white (Alpine) M635CSi which were produced. I'm pretty sure my figure is accurate - and find that out of a total of 522 cars, 72 were white. That's nearly 14%. One in seven.
Yet we seldom see them for sale. There are a couple on ebay at the moment, but when did you last see one for sale/on the road?
I've owned upwards of 25 E24s, including three "M"s, but only one white car (the AVA Turbo). That's the only white E24 I've ever been to look at or purchased. (I'd quite like another one, actually!)
So what is it about white E24s? Have they suffered proportionately higher accidents and been written-off? Is it because, being white, they show rust more and have been scrapped? Or is it that there is a conspiracy to hide these ones away in garages & barns, never to see the light of day?
Anybody got any thoughts

I have a slightly different theory which is that different colours actually rot at different rates, simply because the amount of paint that you need to cover is different. I think that white is a bad colour for this.
Most 6ers have a base layer of filler primer which is white. The amount of white primer and white topcoat you need over that to make it look OK is tiny.
I have seen several white cars that rusted in weird places that you wouldn't normally see (like on the rear quarters forwards of the rear lights) and when investigated there just seemed to be very little paint there, and very little filler primer underneath that (presumably because the panel itself was a good shape to start with). On the same car the filler primer on the (typically somewhat lumpy) front wing pressings could be up to 1.5mm thick in places; no comparison really.
Has anyone else noticed the same thing?
cheers

And that wasn't white when it left the factory IIRC?Pod wrote:..........

We need someone with a paint thickness gauge to do some comparisons on various-coloured cars!Brucey wrote:I have a slightly different theory which is that different colours actually rot at different rates, simply because the amount of paint that you need to cover is different. Sorry, but I simply do not like white cars, period. They just don't do it for me.
However, even I might be tempted by the car that appears at 2 minutes 11 seconds into this video.

Another white M635 on eBay - #039
I wonder, Pod, if white M635s are as scarce as you initially thought. Yet another example has surfaced on ebay. Chassis 0760039, with 107k miles has been listed at £28k(!)

This car was withdrawn from a physical auction in May of this year.

Just remembered this one I went to look at a couple of years ago, damaged repairable they said, not an M though. VBAEC820308187161
Another one to cross off the list.
