Callaway Turbo E24

Post by WISE9UY »

Hi All

I recently purchased an E24 633csi (1980) with a Callaway turbo setup. I also have an E9 and the plan was to transplant that motor but am starting to wonder whether the E9 really needs all the extra power and concerns with reliability/more maintenance. The E24 would then go back to being normally aspirated from another donor motor I have.

Do any of you other there have turbo installations? How well are they serving you?

Incidentally, I spoke with Reeves Callaway himself after buying the car and he very generously gave a good account for these units. Apparently they sold about 400 of these kits in the day so I would have to think there must be more survivors out there...

Hi wiseguy,

I'd be interested to see photos. Mine was fitted to the E28 based 633, the engine without the distributor. I'd like to see photos of your setup if possible.

I didn't use the Microfueler, but did run the intercooler, manifold and turbo for a while. It did the job but was a little bit slow in response in comparison to the new (TCD) turbo I installed (TCD).

I've read about 3-5 callaway M30's online, some e28, e23, and e24. It seems the new turbo technology and fuel management is ideal as compared to the 7th injector of the callaway kit. The problem is you don't really know which cylinders are getting more fuel than the others.

I'm not sure if you could fit the piping and everything in the E9 because those engine bays are a little more cramped if I recall...

Hi there,
This is just me and my 2 cents, but I'd leave the E9 alone. Lots of reasons, including the fact these cars are getting rarer and pricier and the more mods, the less money they'll be worth. More importantly, I don't think that chassis is really designed to take much more torque. In my days I have seen warped chassis and that's not pretty. Besides, whatever you'd do, even if you somehow managed to get it to the level of power/torque (in terms of kW/kg or NM/kg) of a really modern car, the handling, brakes, and many other systems just would have a hard time keeping up. These cars are respectable, and I love them for what they are, but I don't believe in putting them on steroids.
If I wanted to have fun with the turbo, I'd look for a more common chassis that the engine could fit into (maybe an E28?). Still the issues I mention would exist, but at least I would not risk ruining a really good thing...
Cheers
