2018 projects

Post by GazM3 »

It may be interesting to have a look at what projects we wish to complete as the new year festivities have subsided.

I had a pretty productive 2017 with car projects. 2018 is going to be the year of the e24. After pretty well 3 years of very basic maintainace finally going to give the e24 some loving.

Starting with wiring in my haltech ecu and converting to individual coils, no air meter, front mounted cam position sensor and crank sensor. Going to use e34 m30 based loom to finally get rid of the 055 Bosch ecu with the airbflap based system.

Still collecting bits for the engine upgrade. I’m going to pick up an s38 and use a 90mm crank from the b38 rather than using my original matching engine no m88/3. I can then use the big valve head. As these cars become more valuable the standard engine remaining standard will be a good thing. Also then cans build engine on the side giving minimum downtime.

Also on a side note just picked up an Audi S5 Sportback for the Mrs with the 7 Spd DSG box and v6 supercharged. Couldn’t help it and got an APR tune within 2hrs of picking it up for 440bhp It’s got some fierce standing start acceleration. This is to be kept std except for the ecu mod (hopefully).

I'm looking to push on and complete LOCUTUS this year. About 95% complete right now. This is my S38B36 swap. Have completed the ABS relocation and tested my engine harness modifications. Am getting fuel, spark, and injector pulses on turn over. O2 sensor should be arriving soon and will need to weld in the bung and install. Need to hook up throttle and then she should be almost ready to fire up.

After this, I have a little positive displacement forced induction project for my E46 M3. Lots of centrifugal supercharger kits for this platform, but I feel they are rubbish. All top end, which is OK for track. Not so good for street. Research stage at this point.

Hey baders do your self a favour and don’t discount the humble centrifugal blower. It will keep the character of the original motor and add to it. My vortech in the m60b40 is amazingly fun to drive. It sounds also naturally aspirated on steroids. Boost builds from about 2.5k and once you hit 3.5k onwards it goes totally beserk. You put a turbo on and it will make heaps of power but it will sound dull

Well....

I have two projects. First, I have started in on the rebuild of my 2002. I think I should be most of the way through by late summer, and ready to start on my M6 project.

The M6 project is ... significant. 8-[ I plan to have some steel cut out including a new left side lower door frame panel, weld in the replacement panel (already bought replacement panel from Walloth), left side rocker rust repaired as well, some other body/trunk rust repaired (possibly replace the trunk lid), install replacement sunroof, and have the whole car repainted. Basically, a full exterior restoration, and maybe even get the dash re-covered while we are at it. :-k Yes, this is a very expensive proposition, so finding a shop to do that scale of restoration work will be challenging. :-? Did I mention it's also gonna be expensive? OY!!!! #-o
