Just wanted to post up a quick intro thread to say hello. I just recently picked up an 88 635csi, and through research it seems like this is the best forum on the net for these cars so I’ve been lurking through posts for the last few weeks.

I’ve been into classic cars for many years and have bought and sold a mixture of German ( 2 1976 bmw 2002s) and American (50 ford custom, 64 Belair, and 64 Impala SS 327). I’ve also had lots of modern Audi’s and bmws for daily drivers including an e46 330xi, e30 325e, e36 318is, 2013 135i, Audi TT, A3, A4, Q7, etc.

Long story short, a few months back I sold the Impala and started looking for another 2002, but in the northeast they are hard to find due to rust issues. I had my heart set on finding a pre-73 roundie but nothing was catching my eye. A local friend of mine has an 83 633 and I always liked it, so when an 88 635 popped up on the local craigslist I went to see it just to look and satisfy my curiosity.

Well, as you can probably tell by now, after spending 1/2 hour with the car and taking it for a test drive I absolutely fell in love and had to have it!

It feels a little weird to me because it’s much “newer” than any of my other classic cars were, and it’s so smooth and refined. It has definitely taken some getting used to but I’m loving it more every day.

The car was extremely well preserved and has only 64k original miles on it. It’s in truly excellent condition. I’ve been all over it and there are only a few small issues which I should be able to solve quickly. First order of business is get rid of the Moda by BBS wheels that are currently on it. The car came with the OG metric wheels too, but I’m not excited about them or the tire prosepects, so I just picked up a set of style 42 BBS and will have them swapped onto the car in the next week or so.

Anyway here’s a pic of what she looks like right now, and you’ll see me around here for sure. Looks like there’s a ton of great info on this site and I’m looking forward to digging in further. Thanks!

Thanks so much for the welcome guys! I really appreciate it and I’ll defintely post up some more pics once the new wheels are on. They’re sitting in the garage and once I can get a break from work I’ll get them installed.

Side note, does anyone have a good source for a small bottle of oem touch up paint? there was a company I used for my impala but they only specialize in early GM colors.

Bonus pic: here’s a shot of my old 2002 from Bimmerfest in Englishtown NJ that I had 3 years ago. Sold it to get the 64 impala, and now I’m back with BMW once again!

Well I’m back today with an update. I managed to get a set of style 42 BBS on the car today and it’s a much needed improvement. Bonus, I got to take a long hard look at the undercarriage of the car while it was up on the lift, and there is zero visible rot. The car was from a single owner family who kept it in a climate-controlled garage next to a Ferrari, so it was well kept. Looking through the records the car has only been driven 3000 miles since 1994.

The only bumouts so far are that there is a small leak coming from the crush washer on the rear diff, it’s missing the center console ashtray (just got that from BMW of South Atlanta), the passenger side mirror is cracked, and for some reason reason the passenger seat back won’t recline and the lever on the side is stuck. I guess I’ll be pulling the seat out to investigate once it gets cold over the winter, and I’ll get the rear diff resolved soon. Now that the new wheels are on, I’m also tempted to lower the car a little to close some of the wheel gap. Living in NJ there are a ton of potholes so I won’t go too crazy with the drop.

Feels a little strange to have a car with almost no “projects” to do. All of the other classics I’ve bought and sold over the years needed a lot of stuff done, so I’m not sure what I’m going to do with myself once my little issues are sorted. With a hectic job and a baby I barely have time as it is, so I guess I’ll consider myself lucky if I can even find time just to drive it.

Speaking of driving, what a smooth ride. Pulls nice and strong through all the gears and handles very well. I’m super impressed. I fall in love with this thing more every day. I feel like the 6-series was a secret that I never considered and I’m glad to have discovered it.

In a few weeks I’ll get a pic of my friends 83 633csi in dark grey. He’s put a ton of work into it, but the interior is currently in pieces as he is replacing the heater core. Not a fun job! It’ll be nice to have them both together in one shot.
