Hanging on in there......

Post by NigelC »

I started a new thread as I would like to reply to your members kind wishes to me without
hi-jacking Ken Kanne's line.
As you probably gathered from my messages of support to Ken I am also suffering from cancer.
Classed as a rapid growing inoperable terminal cancer that cannot be stopped with established
chemo treatments the future looked grim with a prognosis of 6-9 months at best.
Well, its into month 10 and I am still here. I researched the internet and found that a version of
innunitherapy had been trialed for my particular rare cancer with promising results.
I managed to get a referral to Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital in London ( one of the top cancer
centres in the UK and Europe) and they agreed to take me on as a private patient and started the
treatment on 1st August. I am now on treatment 5 out of 9 and the CT scan results are very
encouraging with many areas of tumor shrinking a lot. In the meantime I have managed to return
to quite good health (necessary for the body's own immune system to work in attacking the cancer
cells) I am a bit of a guinea-pig as they are still learning from me and while they are not promising
a total cure, if it can be shrunk down and halted with periodic top-ups I can cope with that.
This targeted treatment has been developed in the US, so, Ken Sansouci, you are already helping
me more than you ever knew!
I find it very heartwarming to belong to such a great community of people, brought together by
our passion for E24's - it's like having an extended family!
My thanks to members for their kind wishes, Nigel.

It is always amazing that advances in science can be so personal in their impact. I'm glad that you are on the positive side of the trial with clear benefits of longevity. Back when I was in elementary school (1950's) I was part of the massive Salk vaccine trial in the US while my sister (7 years older) wasn't a participant and got a mild case of polio.

Keep up the good fight and try to fill every day with joy.

Ken,

That brought back memories. I also received the injection
back in 1953 or so in PS 171 Astoria.
