Exciting times, getting ready to retire!!!
That's right gents (and ladies), ole Bobbo is getting ready to hang it up, answer the final bell, whatever you want to call it
After 23 years here at Thermo Fisher and 42 years of total working time, I've had enough
Went through the financials, the guys said that we're in very good shape, so I asked, "So, you mean I don't have to work anymore?"
And they responded, "Nope!"
Well, that's all I needed to hear, and gave 3 months' notice at the end of March
And now, here it is, one day away
Still hard to believe, and in theory, I "should" have more time to watch over you nutjobs, but we'll see how that goes
And for those bay area folks, we are also moving soon, getting out of Silicon Valley and heading a bit south, had enough of this overly packed place as well
Just thought you guys should know

Congrats Bobbo! You won't have any trouble finding something to do. Like my father-in-law said after he'd been retired a few months "I don't know how I ever found time to go to work!".

Re: Exciting times, getting ready to retire!!!
Thanks gents, last day of work, and I can assure you, it feels damn weird
Funny stuff Ken
Not sure how I found time to work, gotta love it
Shit, I've got so many projects for the 6er and cabrio, I won't even know where to start
Rainer, not all that sure how "deserving" I am, just reaching the ripe old age of 63 in 2 weeks
But I'm still very able to perform physical duties, and I truly think that a lot of people wait WAY to long to retire
My advice, go through the numbers with professionals and figure out where you're at, and pull the trigger when time is right
Actually, it's all an educated guess, got my fingers crossed as well
Thanks again

Re: Exciting times, getting ready to retire!!!
Congrats on your retirement. Speaking from experience, you should have no problem keeping busy and filling your days. Good luck with the move. I haven't (yet) been able to convince my wife to move away from the Bay Area.
A bit of financial advice - don't start drawing your Social Security until at least your full retirement age (66). Better yet (assuming no health issues) wait until 70 years of age when you have to take it. Each year you wait your monthly social security check increases by approximately 8%.

Hey congrats Bobbo ! I'm 55 and starting to think about it, probably in about 5 years. People ask me what I would do to fill my time. I just giggle and grin :)

Congratulations Bobbo. Now you can REALLY enjoy yourself.
I retired around 16 years ago and have never looked back.
Soon as this wound heals up I can get back to doing more BM themed work.

Congratulations Bobo. Haven’t figured that one out myself yet. Interested to see how close you end up to us. The shop always has room for another series one car. You should have more time for car project now!

Re: Exciting times, getting ready to retire!!!
Heya Bobbo,
It's great when someone retires and still feels like they have lots of living to do. My uncle retired just a couple of months ago, and he is busy/active as ever. It's just all the stuff he feels like doing on that day.
Keep enjoying every day, as you do what YOU WANT to do. Congrats, old timer!

Re: Exciting times, getting ready to retire!!!
Hey guys, been off line for quite a bit, was down south for the 4th, and of course this move has me busier than a one legged guy in a butt kicking contest
Dug, heading to Gilroy
I'll be at the new house tomorrow for most of the day, gotta get the cabrio smogged (already moved it and the 6er...) and deal with an issue with the pool solar water heating system
But thanks again all, B'day was yesterday so it's official now, I'm 63

Re: Exciting times, getting ready to retire!!!
First off, congratulations!
Second, are you moving father from me? I mean, I won't be able to coerce you to come work on the e24? I won't see you at Canepas this fall for Cars and Coffee? That's a bummer.
I am a ways from retiring simply because I have 2 kids in school now. One in undergrad ($) and one in grad school ($$$). One day, I'll tinker on old cars all the time one day.
Still excited to see what you'll be tinkering on next.

Re: Exciting times, getting ready to retire!!!
Song, thank you very much
Heading to Gilroy, so not "too" far
Nice to see you back on line but also glad to see that you haven't been on line because your 6er is behaving
Still in Sunnyvale, busy uncovering 2.5 decades worth of, well, you know
Keep in touch

Re: Exciting times, getting ready to retire!!!
Bobbo,
Wonderful news. I pulled the plug in '17 when I hit 70 and then started drawing beaucoup social security and RMDs from my 401k. So my cash flow is about the same. So now I am spending time with "Honey-do's" and trying to find time to wrench on the E24 and the E32: both are currently garage queens with a long list of remedial work.
I'm sure you'll have a lot to keep mind and body occupied.
