What DO the prices (on BaT) mean?

What DO the prices (on BaT) mean?

Post by Masked Man »

I don't know how many of you are inveterate car porn addicts -as I am- who pour over the offerings on Bringatrailer.com to see the latest offerings from various collections. Most recently a 1988 M6 in Cinnabar with 31K miles on the clock sold for $87,000.00 USD, that's 127,903 in Australian dollars, 71,551 pounds sterling and 115,087 Canadian. While this isn't a record price for an M6 it's a nice chunk of change and in fact a record for BaT.
There is another low mileage M6 in Schwarz, this one with just under 13K on the clock and with 4 days to go the bid is already at $45,000.00 USD.
I mention these because prices on 635CSi cars are all OVER the place! There is a function on BaT that allows you to look at a graph of sale prices but I can't find it right now.

ANYWAY, the point of this (rather long winded post) is to ask if folks think E24's are trending up or just the specialty cars? M6, M635.

ALL E24s are going up in price, I'm sure helped by the seemingly rapid rise in the value of the M6/M635.

I have been trying to sell my 1985 635CSi here in Ontario, Canada as I am trying to downsize to move into an apartment. It is every bit as nice and rust free as any that I see sell on BaT for $10-12US. I had mine advertised on a Canada wide Kijiji ( like Craig's List) priced at $15k Canadian, then $12k and finally $10k ($7500US) and had one offer at $7.5K Canadian which is about $5600US and the buyer didn't even come look at the car nor did anyone else.I live in a northern Ontario city where BMW's are not common and is primarily a pick up truck and SUV community? When I occasionally take this beautiful well maintained car to cruise nights or car shows where I quite often have the only Euro car there it rarely gets looked at except by the occasional local, tourist or immigrant who has some knowledge of German cars. I would say that in Ontario and Canada in general prices are not keeping up with the prices reached in Europe or USA. I will have no problem keeping the car in my garage as I really do love it but rarely drive it anymore and it must be stored 6 months of winter.

Dave,

My observations on BaT lead me to the conclusion that if you want to sell a Canadian car for good money, you'll (unfortunately) need to get it over the border first. There is an inexplicable hesitancy on the part of U.S. bidders to buy an 'international' car. I know that it's really no big thing to bring a car into the U.S. but clearly the majority of folks who would otherwise be interested in your car just won't bid on it. Case in point, the B9 in The Netherlands that only garnered a bid of 29,000. And that's ri-dunk-ulous!

And to be clear? I don't know HOW or whether one should do that. The empirical evidence, however, suggests that this is the case.
Presently there is a lovely 13K M6 (in Schwarz) with 5 days left in the auction and it is ALREADY at 70K! Are these bids reflective of collectors in search of a unicorn? Maybe, because other M6's with substantial miles have not gotten anywhere near these two cars. (The Cinnabar example and this Schwarz one) So, are these prices lifting all boats as Ken suggests? I look forward to your replies.

Phillip, I am watching that 13mile Schwarz M6 also and quite frankly It appears to have significantly more miles on it than advertised. In some respects my 1985 looks better. I am hesitant to put my car in BaT because of the 180K miles they would probably list it only with a "No Reserve" and given the reluctance of US buyers to bid on a Canadian car plus the fact that my car is located in a relatively remote part of Ontario which is not particularly easy to get to the bidding might stall well short of its true value if located in a more populated area.

Setting a reserve is up to you, not them. Seems little to lose if your really looking to sell.
