Hello,
I have had my 1986 BMW 635Csia (now a 635Csi) and often wondered why this specific year has the red/blue M color stripe on the steering wheel. Does anyone on this board have the history/timeline of the chassis build relationship with the first M series built on the 5 series/
Just curious...:)

Re: M series color on steering wheel
Most likely it's on your wheel because someone bought the overlay and put it there. I don't think any of them (year/model "plain" 633/635) came with it except the M6/M635.

Re: M series color on steering wheel
I bought my car new and the M Tech steering wheel had the tri-color M stripe on the center spoke.
I think I saw an auction on BAT recently and the steering wheel had M stripes on all 3 spokes. It looked a little weird.

I think the M Tech I steering wheel was available on the US spec 635csi beginning in 1985. The badge came on this wheel. I'm not 100% sure and someone else here can probably add to this.

Re: M series color on steering wheel
my '87 has the M-tech steering wheel and has always had the coloured trim piece fitted to the centre spoke as the dwg above suggests. IURC it is made of aluminium, and the paint eventually flakes off. I suspect that a vinyl sticker might provide a good substitute for the flaking paint.
