CA residents rejoice! (Maybe) Smog exemption extended to 1982 mfg vehicles

Post by Quietlion79 »

Bill is AB210, currently active and should be voted on in late December or early January. Vehicles manufactured prior to 1983 model year (I think that means that if you have an 83 that was made in 82, you are ok?!)

Are you kidding me

OMG, be still my beating heart [-o<

Fought this almost 2 years ago and had to pay an "extortion" fee to get through smog, even though I pass at the tailpipe, due to my non-CARB complaint headers :-?

Thanks for posting, made my year =D>

Well Bobbo, to say that this "made your year" is really saying something, seeing as how the year is nearly over! Ï hope it passes and I hope the public doesn't vote on it. I think we stand a better chance if that decision is left out of our hands. Hopefully the public servants will see the enormous boon for the CA economy in to form of parts sales and shop time that would come with the newfound value of keeping these cars on the road.

Sorry to hear about your struggles, I am sure you are not alone and I hope that was the last time you'll have to do that!

Comes at a great time for me, as I am going to pick up Tom's 81 Euro tomorrow and drive it back to California. I may just sit on it until the legislation goes through. Wish it came sooner, so many good cars parted out or junked simply because they would not pass smog. *Mornful and solemn Trumpet sounds*

Looks like this bill has been stuck in committee since February. Not a good sign...

Yep, I called Vopel's office yesterday and I was told that they would be voting on it in January at some point. Fingers/toes/arms/legs/eyes crossed!

Everyone - if you care about this issue (be like Bobbo!), please take a few minutes to write your representative and express your support for this bill. Remind them that vintage vehicles are a tiny fraction of the overall auto population, and are also used very infrequently compared to commuter vehicles. And at the end of the day: this is no-effort revenue for the state. It encourages ownership of vehicles which would otherwise leave the state or be scrapped. :-&

People outside of CA can help! Sign petitions like the one I posted that support this amendment! I was thinking about posting CL ads in all of the major CA cities so as to bring this amendment to the attention of more people and to go the "Bobbo route" and call/write their representative to make it a reality. The $5 an ad would be worth it. If anyone wants to help with this, PM me, we can split up the state and get this done!

Hope it passes as the smog rules are silly for collector cars that are not the mass market.

Hope all is well for you Andy!

Thanks Tom!

Just got everything unloaded and figuring out a strategy for this fancy new CSI I just bought from a really good guy in Denver. ;)
Will be making a project thread once I get my list together and get it running right. I sent an email to Matt at Mye28.com for some assistance.

Hope all is going well with you and your new addition to the family!

This bill would do me absolutely no good since my car was manufactured 6/83, but it does occur to me that cars made between 76-82 will see a boost in value (in California at least) if this goes through...

Too little, too late, calipornya can stick their "gracious" plan where the sun don't shine.
I removed the ricky ricer sewer pipe the converter added to my M635 and replaced it with a Super Sprint system.
I wanted to do the right thing and run a converter but found higher flow cats were a no go as the only carb approved converter was the old 2 in, 1 out, anchor I started with.

Well, the car's now registered in a more forward-thinking state with more to follow.

This bill went into the Committee on Transportation on February 13, 2019 and has not come out of committee. Normally that means the measure had died in committee.

I would be very much in favor of extending the smog check exemption to vehicles newer than 1976 model year. We need the environmentalists to get the picture that only car enthusiasts are (infrequently) using older vehicles.
